IMPROVEM ENT IN STENCILS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 204,803, dated June 11, 1878; application filed April 20, 1878.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, CHARLES H. DANA, of Lebanon, in the county of Grafton and State of New Hampshire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stencil-Plates; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in stencil-plates, and is designed to provide a plate which can be formed at a very small initial cost in comparison with the present style of plates.
Heretofore stencil-plates made with independent letters have had the pieces in which the letters are respectively formed connected together in various ways, such as by tongue and groove, seam-joints, and other mechanical means.
My invention consists in forming a stencilplate of letterswhich are made of independent strips of paper or other material, which will adhere together by means of glue or similar adhesive substance, said letters being separately formed on strips which are respectivel y made with a longitudinal portion ot' their body provided with the adhesive substance, and a guiding-line which bounds the same, so as to cause the said letter-strips to be united together in a true and even manner.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents the stencil-plate. Fig. 2 shows several letters detached, and also the manner of connecting the same. l
Each of the letter-strips A is made of paper or similar material that will admit of the ready connection of the same by means of glue or other adhesive substance. Each is provided with the guiding-line a, which may be in any desired color, and which extends along one side of the strip contiguous to its edge. The portion contained between this line and the edge of the strip is coated with mucilage, glue, or any suitable adhesive substance, as shown at b, and the same constitutes the means of uniting the different letterstrips together.
The line serves to mark the strips, so that they can be connected together in a true and even manner, thus bringing the different letters into line with each other, while the mucilage or other sticky substance securely fastens them together, and makes a very smooth plate face and pleasant working-surface. for the brush in the ordinary use of the plate.
This manner of connecting the letter-strips by an adhesive substance obviates the necessity ot' mechanical devices in forming the stencil-plate, and the latter can be readily made in a simple and economical way.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A stencil-plate letter formed of a strip of paper or similar material, the same being provided with the described guiding-line and coating of adhesive substance, whereby it is adapted to be readily and accurately connected with other independent letter-strips similarly made, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 13th day of April, 1878.
CHARLES H. DANA.
