UNITED STATES PATENT OEErcE.
WILSON I. BEST, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
CH EG-KPROTECTOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 383,854, dated June 5, 1888.
Application filed March 26, 1887. Serial No. 232,550. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILSON I. BEST, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Ohecl -Protecto1s, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in devices l'or protecting checks or other evidences of valuesuch as bonds, stocks, notes, wills, or any other printed or written matterfrom alteration, raising, or forgery, and it is carried out as follows, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure l represents a check having my improved protector attached to it previous to pasting or sticking it onto the body of the check, and Fig. 2 represents the same check after the protector has been pasted or stuck onto the place where the Vallio is to be protected.
Similar letters refer to similar parts whereever they occur on the different parts of the drawings.
In the drawings, A represents a check, bond, note, or other written or printed matter, the value or wording of which is to be protected. Near the place of the check or other document the value or wording of which is to be protected I attach by'means of mucilage or other adhesive substance a transparent strip, B, made of paper or other textile or iibrous material, the under side of which is prefer ably coated with a suitable adhesive substance.
The evidence of value or wording of the instrument to be protected after being printed or written is protected by pasting over it the transparent strip B, as shown in Fig. 2, allowing the numbers or words to be seen through the said transparent strip B, as shown in said Fig. 2.V Any attempt to alter such evidence of value or wording ot' the instrument after the transparent strip B has been pasted over it will be perceived at a glance, thus affording a perfect protection against the alteration or erasure of the part of the document that is thus protected.
It' so desired, the transparent strips B may be made separate from the check or other document, and after the value or wording thereof has been printed or written such part or parts may be protected by pasting over it the transparent strip B-one or more, as the case may require-without departing from the essence of my invention. l
Iam aware that United States Letters Patent were granted March 23, 1880, No. 225,748, to S. It. Dummer, for bonds, notes, Src., in which the evidence of value afterbeing printed or written is covered with a coating ot' transparent or semitransparent insoluble size,
upon which is afterward printed a design, but
such manner of protection is not practical for checks, bonds, notes, wills, or other documents that have to be executed in writing, as it necessitates the use both of an insoluble size and a. stamp for printing a design over the coating of insoluble size; and, moreover, as a great deal of unnecessary time would be wasted in waiting for the size to dry before applying the stamped design over it, such ob- `jections being entirely overcome with my improved protector, which is at all times ready for use; and I wish to state that I do not claim as my invention the arrangement as shown and described and claimed in the said Dummer patent; but
What I wish to secure by Letters Patent, and claim, is*
The check or other document A, combined with the transparent strip B, gummed on the under side and attached at one of its ends to the check-body,and adapted to be pasted over the part to be protected on the document, substantially as set forth and described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses, on this 21st day of March, A. D. 1887.
ALBAN ANDRN, CHARLES H. Foce.
