This invention relates generally to head coverings, and more speciiically to head coverings in the form of hats or caps, the predominant object of the invention being to provide an improved. head covering which is of extremely simple construction and arrangement, and hence is capable of being produced in a very inexpensive manner.
One very important use for the improved head covering disclosed herein (though not in any sense its only use) is as a shower-bath cap. When the improved head covering is employed for this purpose it preferably, though not necessarily, is made of moisture-proof cellophane, as this material lends itself very well to the requirements of a shower-bath cap. The improved head covering is made on very simple lines, hence the material of which it is formed is a matter of relatively unimportant consideration, as many materials may be used due to the entire absence of any complicated working of the material in making the head coverings. When the improved head coverings are produced from moisture-proof cellophane, they may be sold at a very reasonable figure. This permits users of the head coverings to buy them in lots and use them freely, disposing of the head coverings after they have served their usefulness.
Fig. l is a perspective of the improved head covering showing same as it will appear in use on the head of a user thereof.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the head covering shown in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is an elevation of the head covering showing same in a contracted or collapsed condition.
Fig. 4 is a modification of the invention showing a form of head covering having a different means for drawing the material of the head covering together at the top of the head covering.
Fig. 5 is a view on a reduced scale showing a section of material from which the improved head covering is made, showing said section of material before the head covering is produced therefrom.
In the drawing, wherein is shown for the purpose of illustration, merely, one embodiment of the invention, A designates the improved head covering generally. The head covering A is made from a tubular section of material as designated by the reference character B in Fig. 5. The material of the tubular section B is pleated longitudinally thereof, as designated by the reference character C, this reference character referring to the pleating in the material shown in the other views of the drawing also. .At its lower end upper portion of said tubular section of material lo together in its contracted condition by suitable securing means. Because of the pleats in the tubular section of material, the top portion of said tubular section of material readily assumes its changed position when said top portion of said l5 tubular section of material is drawn together, as described. This results from the fact that the pleats are caused by the contraction of the top portion of the tubular section of material to overlap each other to varying degrees, as the contraction of the top portion of the tubular section of material takes place, whereby a smoothly curved portion D is provided with constitutes the shaped top of the head covering.
The means for securing the drawn-together or contracted portion E of the head covering A may be a hollow, metallic cap F, as sho-wn in Figs. 1, 2, and 3, which cap receives the extreme upper end portion of the contracted portion of the head covering and itself is contracted after it is arranged in place, so as to tightly grip the contracted material of the head covering and thus produce a secure, waterproof joint. Also, if preferred, this joint may be made as shown in Fig. Il by wrapping a cord G tightly about the contracted material of the head covering and securing said cord in p-lace by knots or otherwise.
The presence of the pleats in the material from which the improved head covering is formed permits of said head covering being readily collapsed, as shown in Figs. 3 and ll. This results from the fact that the pleats overlap each other so as to reduce the head covering to the condition shown in the views mentioned.
From the foregoing it is plain that a head covering made in accordance with this invention is of extremely simple construction, and is capable of very eiciently performing its intended function.
In addition to use of the improved head covr ering as a shower-bath cap, it is obvious that my improved construction may be employed in producing head coverings which cover the entire head and face of the wearer. Such head coverings may be used in stores and dress shops for protecting dresses being tried on by prospective purchasers from lipstick and rouge Worn by the prospective purchasers. Also, the improved construction may be employed in producing a beauty parlor cap which covers only a portion of the hair of the wearer of the cap. In other words, the invention is capable of being used in connection with the manufacture of a great variety of head coverings, and therefore I do not Wish that anything herein shall be interpreted as limiting the invention to any particular type of head covering intended for any particular use.
I claim:
1. A head covering comprising a tubular section of material open at one of its ends and drawn together at its opposite end, pleats formed in the material of said tubular section of material, and mea-ns comprising annular embracing means for maintaining the section of material at the latter end thereof in its drawn-together condition, the
axis of said annular embracing means being extended longitudinally of the tubular section of material forming the head covering.
2. A head covering comprising a tubular section of material open at one of its ends and drawn together at its opposite end, said tubular section of material at the first-mentioned end thereof being provided with an inclined edge, pleats formed in the material of said tubular section of material, .and means for maintaining the section of material at the latter end thereof in its drawntogether condition, said means comprising an element which includes annular embracing means that receives and grips a portion of the drawntogether end portion of said tubular section of material, the axis of said annular embracing means being extended longitudinally of the tubular section of material forming the head covering,
