Description

J.- JAcoBs GARTER GRIP June 16, 1936 "Filed Match 28 INVENTOR ATTORNEY Patented June 16, 1936 A. J. DonahueCorporation, Milford, 001111., a a corporation of Connecticut v V 7 Application March 28,
2 Claims.
This invention relates to garters, and more particularly to a garter grip for detachably connecting the top of a hose to the band encircling the leg of the wearer. n
One object of this invention is to provide a garter grip consisting of a non-elastic tape which is adapted to be temporarily secured without stitching to the garter button plate and the metal eye loop prior to'the attachment of the grip to the garter pad depending from the leg band.
A further object is to provide a garter grip of the above nature in which the tape is provided on one surface with a central line of sticky rubber cement or similar adhesivesubstance, whereby when the ends of said tape are folded over and pressed upon the body of the tape, the button plate and eye loop will be held securelyin assembled position.
A further object is to provide a garter grip of the above nature which will be simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture, easy to manipulate, compact, and very eflicient and durable in use.
With these and other objects in view there has been illustrated on the accompanying drawing, one form in which the invention may be conveniently embodied in practice.
In the drawing:
view of a strip of tape employed in the present invention.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the tape-as it appears when the garter button plate has been assembled thereto.
Fig. 3 is a similar perspective view showing the assembled tape, garter button plate, and garter eye loop.
Fig. 4 is a perspective view similar to Fig. 3, showing the appearance of the garter grip when the tape has been folded over and the eye loop engaged upon the button prior to the final opera-' tion of stitching the grip to the depending garter pad.
Fig. 5 is a front elevation of the completed garter, showing the pad stitched to the folded over portion of the tape.
Referring now to the drawing in which like reference numerals denote corresponding parts throughout the several views, the numeral ll indicates a strip of tape, preferably of non-elastic woven fabric. A narrow line of sticky adhesive material, such as rubber cement indicated by the numeral I2, is applied longitudinally along the center of the tape ll, said line of adhesive ex- Fig. 1 represents a perspective fragmentary V 1934; Serial No. 717,780
tending the entire length of said tape and being located on one surface'only.
In the manufacture of the garter grip, the tape l I, will first be threaded .downwardlythrough both slots of the button plate I 3 of a button member M. The tape II will then be looped about the lower edge of the plate l3 and bent upwardly behind the button plate I 3 in such a manner that the end of the line of adhesive I2 will lie against the body section of said line, and when the parts are pressed together, the button member will be held securely in assembled position. The parts will then have the appearance illustrated in Fig. 2, and it will be seen that a single thickness I5 of said tape llv will project above the folded section [6.
A locking eye or loop [1, preferably constructed of wire, will next be assembled upon the upper end of the tape II by threading the upper portion [5 of said tape through the lower wide end of the loop I1, and folding the tape H downwardly upon itself, as shown in Fig. 3. The contiguous sections of the cement line l2, when pressed. together, will serve to maintain the eye loop IT in the assembled position shown in Fig. 3.
As clearly shown in Fig. 3, the folded over extremities l8 and 3a of the tape l2 are purposely spaced apart so as to leave a small space l9 therebetween.
The upper eye loop I! and the upper doubled down portion Ila of the tape will next be folded downwardly along the dotted line l9a at the space l9, and the narrow end of the loop I! will be engaged upon a rubber button 20 upstanding 3 from the body of. the button plate l3, as shown in Fig. 4. This completes the assembly of the garter grip, and it will be seen that no basting or stitching operations are necessary as the parts of the garter grip will be held securely in assembled relation without danger of unfolding by the adherence ofthe folded over sections of the line of rubber cement of the tape ll To complete the garter, it will now only be necessary to attach the garter grip to a pad 2i of an elastic leg band 22 by inserting the upper four-thickness fold Ila of the garter grip between the two sections of the lower end of the pad 2|. This is accomplished by means of a line of double stitching 24 extending around the edge of the pad 2|, as clearly shown in Fig. 5.
While there has been disclosed in this specification one form in which the invention may be embodied it is to be understood that this form is shown for the purpose of illustration only, and
that the invention is not to be limited to the specific disclosure but may be modified and embodied in various other forms without departing from its spirit. In short, the invention includes all the modifications and embodiments coming within the scope of the following claims.
Having thus fully described the invention, what is claimed as new and for which it is desired to secure Letters Patent, is:
1. A garter grip comprising a slotted button plate, an eye loop member, and an elongated tape for connecting said button plate and eye loop member, said tape having one surface coated with a line of sticky adhesive material, said tape having bent-over end loops extending through and embracing said slotted button plate and eye loop members respectively, the surfaces of said bentover end loops being in intimate adhering contact with the body of. said tape for maintaining said plate and loop member in proper assembled position as a grip unit prior tothe permanent attachment of said unit to a garter pad.
2. A garter grip comprising a slotted button plate, an eye loop member, and an elongated tape for connecting said plate and eye loop member, said tape being coated on one side surface with sticky adhesive material and having its ends bent over and extending through openings in said button plate and eye loop member, said bent-over ends being in intimate adhering contact with the body of said tape, the ends of said bent-over tape being slightly spaced apart upon the body of said tape to permit said garter grip to be transversely folded at a single ply prior to the permanent attachment of said grip to a garter pad.
