Description

AENT FFICE.
SYLVANUS FANSHER, OF SOUTHBURY, CONNECTICUT.
MANNER 0F CONSTRUC'IING WINDOW-BLIND FASTENERS.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 2,042, dated April 10, 1841; Antedated December 10, 1840.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, SYLVANUS FANSHER,
of Southbury, county of New Haven, and State. of Connecticut, have invented a new and improved mode of opening, shuttin and fastening window blinds and shutters which supersedes the necessity of reaching the arm. out of the window and which 1 term window-blind braces and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description.
The nature of my invention consists of a wire bar with a couple of rings or loops turned on one end and a moving joint and fulcrum-post on the other end to be attached to the blind.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I proceed to describe its construction and operation.
construct my braces of a piece or bar of No. 6 wire, i'roln thirteen to sixteen inches long. as shown at (a a) with a couple of rings turned on one end of said bar, one of them. an inch diameter, to rest in a vertical position on the window-sill, to serve as a handle, the other, three quarters of an inch, to rest in a horizontal position as a fastener (b b). On the opposite end of the bar is to be turned an half inch eye, to link in another eye, turned on one end of a two and a half or three inch bit of wire of the same size; the other end of this short bit of wire is to be fastened firmly into the blind near the lower end of the same with a collar, screw and nut, or rivet, or elenchech'to serve as a fulcrum post for a moving joint (0 c) and by the finger applied to the handle aforesaid, the blind is easily pushed open and closed; and a staple (e) is to be set near the ends of the window sill, over which the horizontal ring is to be placed, which fastens the blind back, as seen in the drawing,
and another staple is to be set in the lower end of the blind, near its center, turned up at right angles ((Z (Z) which will come in contact with an opposite one in the window sill when the blind is shut; and over both of these staples, the said horizontal ring is to be set, by which means the blind is fastened when closed. The joint is to be guarded on each side by a smaller wire turned round the eye of the fulcrum-post in the form of a link of a chain bent double, and turned spiral from the said eye round the said post, forming a shoulder for the collar where it enters the blind as seen in the drawing. The post is to pass through the blind and to be fastened on the opposite side. The barand post may be constructed of iron, brass, or any other suitable material, and for heavy windows the metallic bar and post may be connected by a folding-joint, similar to that of a carriagetop.
.Vhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- T he above described mode of fastening window-shutters and blinds, which consists of the bar attached by a joint to the shutter, in combination with the staples (c e) and ((Z (Z) so that the loop on the end of the bar shall pass over the staples. (Z (Z, to keep the shutter closed. and over the staple, e, to keep it opened, all herein described.
SYLVANUS FANSHER.
