IMPROVEMENT IN SHUTTER-FASTENINGS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 146,028, dated December 30, 1873; application filed November 1, 1873.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HENRY A. SKINNER, of the city and county of Worcester, in the State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and Improved Blind-Fastener, of which the following is a specification:

Figure 1 is a top view of my invention. Fig. 2 is an end view of the same. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section.

My invention is designed for use upon window blinds or shutters. By giving to my fastenter a rotary movement, I am able to actuate it by the weight or mass of metal projecting upon one side of it, and serving as a handle, which, in falling, brings the catch to a horizontal position, inclosing the staple or post upon the window-sill.

A spindle or rod, A, is made with catches B and 0, both lying on one side of it, and a handl-e, D, upon the other side, opposite to the catch B. These are all cast in one piece, in the shape shown in the drawing. The catches B and 0 have a beveled face, and the rod A turns within a barrel, E, which, being furnished with a screw-thread, is secured into and through the blind, projecting upon both sides. Projecting lips F F terminate it on both ends, and these, too, are beveled, and are in contact with the catches B and C, respectively. The barrel E is cast in two longitudinal sections, and are fastened together at a by a small screw and rivet. An opening or hole, I), is made, through which water may escape that, in rainy weather, may have worked its way within the case or barrel E, and which otherwise, especially in cold weather, might occasion injury. A shoulder, c, is cut into the upper part of this case, to prevent the rod A from turning too far. In closing the blind the beveled face of the catch B strikes against the post G, and is tipped downward, allowing the post to be admitted between it and the lip F, until, having passed beyond it, the weight of the handle D, which has been elevated by this operation, brings the catch B back to its horizontal position, inclosing the post G, and the blind is secured in place.

On opening the blind the handle D is raised, and the catch clears the post as the whole is swung outwardly, and when fully open the catch C engages in a similar manner with its corresponding staple in the outer wall of the house. Instead of using the case or barrel E, the rod and connected catches may be secured under the blind by staples or other means.

The rotating movement or the substitution of a falling weight in the place of a spring may obviously be secured by placing the working parts in a different position relatively to the blind 5 but such contrivances, notwithstanding some modifications of shape, would obviously be within my invention.

I claim as a novel and useful invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The rotating blind-fastener A B G D, with or without its case E, substantially as described.

2. The blind-fastener consisting of the rotating rod or spindle A, with its catches B O, handle D, and case or barrel E, with its lips F F, made and used as and for the purpose specified.
