12 Claims. (01.220-36) This invention relates to improvements in sanitary cabinets for garbage cans and the like, and has more particular reference to certain improvements in the type of cabinet disclosed in my co-pending U. S. application for Letters Patent Ser. No. 678,092, filed June 28, 1933.

The primary object of the present invention is to provide a cabinet of the above kindhaving a main or primary cover provided with a central 13 opening through which garbage may be discharged from time to time into the garbage can or like receptacle within the cabinet, the main cover having a secondary cover for closingv the central opening thereof until such times as it is 1.3 desired to deposit garbage or refuse into the garpage can or receptacle within the cabinet, and pedal operated means being provided for opening the secondary cover for generally well known purposes, such pedal operated means being constructed, however, so as to freely permit opening of the main or primary cover whenever desired and to limit the opening movement of such main or primary cover.

A further object of the present invention is to; provide a sanitary cabinet of the character specified above wherein the pedal-operated means for opening the secondary cover is so constructed as to close said secondary cover when the main or primary cover is opened.

A further object of the present invention is to provide the secondary cover of the cabinet with a hinged guard member adapted to automatically assume a position extending downwardly into the central opening of the main or primary cover 35 at the back of such opening when the main cover is closed and the secondary cover is opened, whereby garbage or refuse discharged into the garbage can or like receptacle within the cabinet will be properly deflected into said can or recep- 40 tacle and prevented from lodging upon the main cover at the rear of its central opening.

St ll another object of the present invention is to provide means for mounting the guard memher for limited swinging movement relative to 45 the secondary cover so that said guard member will freely pass into the tubular entrance member formed on the main cover about its central opening, at the same time being prevented from unlimited swinging movement so that said guard member will be required to swing a minimum distance to operative guarding position when the secondary cover is opened and will be prevented from rattling against the entrance member of the main cover when both covers are closed and the cabinet is moved or disturbed.

Still another object of the present invention is to provide a cabinet of the above kind constructed to accommodate therein the cover for the garbage can or refuse receptacle when the latter is positioned in the cabinet and when said cover of the garbage can or like receptacle is removed from the latter, and means for vertically suspending said cover of the garbage can or refuse receptacle from the main cover of the cabinet in front of said garbage can or refuse receptacle, whereby, when the main cover of the cabinet is opened, the cover of the garbage can or refuse receptacle will be elevated therewith in convenient position for being grasped and placed upon the garbage can or refuse receptacle preparatory to removal of the'garbage can or refuse receptacle from the cabinet for disposal of its contents.

Other objects and features of the present invention will become apparent .as the nature of the invention is better understood, and the same consists in the novel form, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings and claimed.

Figure 9 is a fragmentary sectional detail view drawn on an enlarged scale to more clearly show the slidable connection between the secondary cover and the associated actuating arm.

Referring more in detail to the drawings, the

'lower portion thereof and closed at the top by s means of a hinged main or primary cover 9 arranged to swing upwardly and rearwardly to open position so as to permit the can or receptacle 5 to be placed within or removed from the cabinet. The portion of the body 'l below the bottom wall 8 is shaped to provide corner supporting legs II).

Formed in the main or primary cover 9 is a relatively large central opening, and rigid'with 'and depending from said main cover 9 in surrounding relation to its central opening is a tubular entrance member I I for directinggthe garbage or refuse into the can or receptacle 5 when dischargedsthrough the central opening of cover 9. This central opening of cover 9 is closed by a hinged secondary cover I2 mounted on the main cover 9rrearwardly of its central opening for swinging upwardly and rearwardly to open position. In order that the secondary cover I2 may be durable to withstand repeated opening and closing thereof, it is preferably constructed of two layers or sheets of embossed metal suitably united permanently, the lower layer or sheet being of slightly smaller size than the upper layer, and both layers or sheets having downturned marginal edges between which is fitted and secured a resilient gasket I3 arranged to seat upon the main cover 9 about its central opening so as to provide a comparatively airtight closure for the cabinet about the central opening of main cover 9. Also, the gasket I3 acts as a buffer 'for absorbing shocks arising from sudden closing of bage or refuse in the can or receptacle 5, thereby leaving both handsof the operator free for handling the garbage or refuse and discharging it into the can or receptacle 5. This pedal-oper-' ated means preferably includes a rock shaft I4 journaled at I5 upon the bottom wall 8 of the cabinetat one side of and near the front of the'latter, said rock shaft projecting outwardly through the adjacent side wall of the cabinet and terminating in a forwardly projecting pedal I6;

Rigid with and projecting upwardly from the rook shaft I4 within the cabinet is an arm-I1 connected by a link I8 with the shorter rearwardly directed arm I9 of a bell crank lever pivoted at 20 on a horizontal transverse axis upon the bottom wall 8 ,of the cabinet rearwardly of the rock shaft I4 and having a longer upwardly and rearwardly projecting arm 2|, the outer ends of the arms I9 and H of the bell crank lever being connected by a brace rod 22. Journaled on the underside of main cover 9 at the rear of entrance member {I on a transverse axis and in suitable bearings 23 is a further'rock shaft 24 whose outer end is provided with an angular .crank arm 25 connected by a further link 26 with the outer end of the longer arm 2|. of the aboveementioned bell crank lever. Rigid with the inner end of rock shaft 24 is a forwardly projecting arm 21 which lies parallel with and directly under the secondary cover I2 and has its forward free end portion freely slidable in an elongated socket 28 fixed on the under side of secondary cover I2. Extending through one side of the open rear end of socket 28 is a stop member or screw attached to the secondary cover I2 and cooperating with a laterally directed terminal 30 on the free forward end of arm 21 to limit relative movement between the arm 21 and secondary cover I2 in one direction and thereby limiting the opening movement of secondary cover I2 under the influence of arm 21 when the' latter is swung upwardly and rearwardly by actuation of pedal I6 through the connectiondescribed which is provided between said pedal I6 and rock shaft 24. Such opening movement of secondary cover I2 is limited so that said cover I2 may not swing open or up-' wardly and rearwardly past a vertical plane, thereby requiring continued pressure on the pedal I6 to maintain the cover I2 open, and insuring that the cover I2 will immediately gravitate to closed position when pressure on the pedal I6 is released. It will be particularly noted that, due to r the comparativelyshort length of the arms I1 and I9 relative to the length of arm 2I and due to the nature of the operating connection be-' tween arm 21 and secondary cover I2, a very slight depression of pedal I6 and turning of rock shaft I4 will effect complete opening of secondary cover I2, as made apparent by a comparison of Figures 2 and 3. It will also benoted that whenthe secondary cover I2 is opened with the main cover 9 closed, the bell crank lever arm I9 is in a rearwardly and upwardly inclined position considerably spaced from the bottom wall 8,

so that the bell crank lever composed of arms I9 and 2 I is permitted additional rearward swinging movement suflicient to allow complete opening of main cover 9 without disconnecting the secondary cover I2 from the pedal I6. In fact, the arrangement is such that when the main cover 9 is opened the arm I9 of said bell crank lever will swing rearwardly and downwardly into engagement with the bottom wall 8 to limit the opening movement of main cover 9 to a position wherein the same is in a slightly upwardly and rearwardly inclined position, where it will remain 7 until manually closed. When the main cover is thus opened, the connection between rock shaft- 24 and bell crank lever I9, 2I acts as the means for limiting the opening movement of main cover 9, and link 26 also exerts a pull on the angular crank arm' 25 of rock shaft 24 so that the secondaryv cover I2 will be closed when the main cover 9 is open and will be maintained closed'as long as said main cover 9 is open. 'In this way,

deposited and become lodged when discharging garbage or refuse through the central opening of cover 9 into the can or receptacle 5. To prevent objectionableoccurrence, I provide the secondary cover'l2 with a hinged guard 'member or plate 3| arranged'to assume a depending vertical position at the back of the central opening of covers and projecting slightly into the entrance member when the secondary cover I2 is open, whereby any garbage or refuse striking against said guard member or plate 3|v willbe deflected into the entrance member l and thereby prevent itfrom falling and lodging upon the ledge at the rear of the opening of main cover '9 in front of the point where the secondary cover I2 is hinged to said main cover 9. Naturally this prevents lodged material from interfering with the closing of secondary cover l2 and prevents other obvious objectionable occurrences. As shown, brackets 32 are secured to the under side of secondary cover I2 at opposite sides of the socket 28, and such brackets are formed with downwardly, then forwardly, and then rearwardly directed hook-shaped edges which are interlocked with hook-shaped upper edge portions 33 of the guard plate 3| for hingedly mounting the latter onthe cover I2. It is particularly noted that the hook-shaped edge portions 33 of guard plate 3| are directed rearwardly at an acute angle to said guard plate 3| and fitted within the hookshaped portions of brackets 32 so that swinging movement of guard plate 3| is limited relative to secondary cover l2 for preventing guard 3| from lowering or'swinging downwardly and forwardly to a vertical position when the secondary cover IZis closed, and specifically maintaining said guard 3| in a rearwardly and downwardly inclined normal position within entrance memher and projecting past the lower edge of the latter at the rear thereof. At the same time, movement of guard 3| toward cover I2 is permitted when the cover I2 is opened, and in this Way the guard 3| is maintained in a position wherein it will be required to move a minimum distance in assuming the depending vertical position above-mentioned when the cover |2 is opened as shown in Figure 3. Naturally, the limiting of the swinging movement of guard 31 as described in a forward direction and to a rearwardly and downwardly inclined position as shown in Figure 8 has the additional advantage of preventing rattling of this guard plate when the cabinet is disturbed or moved.

Means is provided for suspending the cover 6 of the can or receptacle 5 from the main cabinet cover 9 within the cabinet in front of said can or receptacle 5, whereby, when the main cover 9 of the cabinet is opened, said cover 5 of the can or receptacle 5 will be elevated with said main cover 9 as shown in Figure 5 in position to be conveniently grasped and detached from the main cover 9 for subsequent placement upon the can or receptacle 5 preparatory to removal of the latter from the cabinet. This means suspends the cover 6 from the main cabinet cover 9 by the marginal rim of said cover 6 and with the latter vertically disposed when the main cabinet cover 9 is closed. Thus, when the main cabinet .cover 9 is opened, the cover 5 of can or receptacle 5 is elevated and swung to a nearly horizontal position above can or receptacle 5 and between the line of vision of the operator and the garbage or refuse in said can or receptacle 5 while still within the cabinet. This is desirable in that it avoids clear vision of the unsightly garbage or refuse at this time as well as preventing direct passage of odor or fumes from the cabinet and the receptacle or can 5 to the nostrils of the operator. While many suitable devices may be evolved for thus suspending the cover 6 from the main cabinet cover 9, I prefer to employ such a means consisting in spaced horizontal and forwardly projecting angular brackets 34 and 35 arranged in superposed relation and rigidly secured to and projecting forwardly from the forward side of entrance member H, the lower bracket 35 being slightly longer than the upper bracket 34 so that the upwardly directed lateral end portion thereof impinges the inside of the rim of cover 6 at a point outwardly or forwardly of that at which the outer surface of said rim is impinged by the downturned lateral terminal of upper bracket 34. It will be noted that the cover 6 is of a standard type having an outwardly directed bead on the free marginal edge of the rim of the same behind which the downwardly directed lateral end of upper bracket 34 gages, so that said brackets 34 and 35 sustain the cover 6 in a position substantially at right angles to the main cabinet cover 9 regardless of the position of the latter, or, rather, regardless of the fact that the cover 6 has a tendency to gravitate to vertical position when the main cabinet cover 9 is swung open.

It will be understood that the main cover 9 is preferably of a form to constitute a fairly airtight closure for the cabinet, being accurately stamped and shaped to snugly fit the upper end of the cabinet body when in closed position and even though not provided with means for tightly seating the same. Any suitable handle 35 may be provided to facilitate opening and closing of the main cover 9. As disclosed in my abovementioned co-pending application, suitable means indicated generally at 3? is provided in one corner of and at the bottom of the cabinet for deodorizing and preventing or retarding decay of the garbage or refuse placed in the can or receptacle 5. The only difference between this means as disclosed herein and as disclosed in said co-pending application is that the retainer or shield in the present application is of conical shapeand constructed of wire gauze or screening instead of being flat and of perforated sheet metal.

To assist in proper positioning of the can or receptacle 5 within the cabinet so that it will not strike against the means Bl, so that the entrance member I will be properly centralized in the open top of can or receptacle 5 when main cabinet cover 9 is closed, and so that sufficient space will be left in front of the can or receptacle 5 for accommodation of its lid or cover 6, an arcuate horizontal guide strip 31' is fastened within the upper portion of the cabinet body across the corner where the means 31 is located and against which the can or receptacle 5 may be readily engaged when placed upon the bottom wall 8.

From the foregoing description, it will be seen that I have provided valuable improvements in cabinets of the type described, wherein simple, durable and efficient construction is provided for, and wherein the improvements are such as to most efficiently carry out the stated objects of the invention. While I have illustrated and described the preferred construction and embodiments of the improvements, it is nevertheless to be understood that various changes will suggest themselves to those skilled in the art and are contemplated within the scope of the invention as claimed.

What I claim as new is: I

l. A garbage or like cabinet having a primary cover hinged to the back thereof and formed with a garbage or refuse receiving opening, a secondary cover for said opening having a crank arm and hinged to the primary cover at the rear of,

said opening, an operatingpedal having a crank arm and movably supported by the body of said a container near the front of the latter, and a link and lever connection between said pedal and the secondary cover whereby a movement of the pedal is caused to raise the secondary cover, said connection permitting free opening of the primary cover 2. A garbage or like cabinet having a primary cover hinged to the back thereof and formed with a garbage or refuse receiving opening, a secondary cover for said opening having a crank arm and hinged to the primary cover at the rear of said opening, an operating pedal having a crank arm and movably supported by the body of said container near the front of the latter, and a link and lever connection between said pedal and the secondary cover whereby a movement of the pedal is caused to raise the secondary cover, said connection permitting free opening of the primary cover and cooperating with the body of said container to limit the opening movement of "said primary cover.

3. A garbage or like cabinet having a primary cover hinged to the back thereof and formed with a garbage or refusereceiving opening, a secondary cover for'said opening having a crank arm and hinged to the primary cover at the rear of said opening, an operating pedal having a crank arm and movably supported by the body of said container near the front of the latter, and a link and lever connection between said pedal and the secondary cover whereby a movement of the pedal is caused'to raise the secondary cover to a position wherein the same will gravitate to closed position when pressure on the pedal is released, said connection permitting free opening'of the primary cover and acting to close and maintain the secondary cover closed when said primary cover is opened.

4. A garbage or like receptacle container having a primary cover hinged to the back thereof and formed with a garbage or refuse receiving opening, a secondary cover for said opening hinged to the primary cover at the rear of said opening, a transverse rock shaft journaled upon the bottom of said container adjacent one side and near the front of the latter, said rock shaft projecting outwardly through said one side and 5. 6. A garbage or like receptacle container having a primary cover hinged to the back thereof and formed with a garbage or refuse receiving opening, a secondary cover for said opening hinged to the primary cover at the rear of said opening, 1 a transverserock shaft journaled upon the bottom of said container" adjacent one side and near the front of the latter, said rock shaft projecting outwardly through said one side and terminating in an external forwardly projecting pedal, an

elongated socket securedto the under side of said secondary cover, a.further rock shaft journaled transversely on the under side of said secondary cover and having a forwardly projecting arm longitudinally slidable in said socket, a connection between said rock shafts whereby depression of said pedal causes raising of said, secondary cover, said connection including an angular crank arm on the second-named rock shaft and a bell crank lever pivoted on the bottom of said container and operatively connected with said angular crank arm whereby the secondary cover will be closed when the primary cover is opened.

'7. A garbage or like receptacle container having a hinged primary cover formed with a garbage or refuse receiving opening surrounded. by adepending tubular entrance member, a secondary cover hinged to the primary cover rearwardly of said opening and adapted to cover the latter, and a guard plate hinged to the under side of said secondary cover and adapted to gravitateeto a depending vertical position at the rear of'said opening and depending into said entrance member when the secondary cover is opened.

8. A garbage or like receptacle container having a hinged primary cover formed with a garbage or refuse receiving opening surrounded by a depending tubular entrance member, a' secondary cover hinged to the primary cover rearwardly of said opening and adapted to cover the latter, and a guard plate hinged to the under side of said secondary cover and adapted to gravitate to a depending vertical position at the rear of said opening and depending into said entrance member when the secondary cover is opened, said guard plate being arranged to gravitate away from the secondary cover and passed downwardly through the entrance member when the sec-.

ondary cover is closed and having means to limit movement thereof away from the secondary cover at such times for maintaining the same in a normal downwardly and rearwardly inclined position.

" 9. The'combination with a container having a hinged cover, a garbage or like receptacle in said container, and a removable cover for said garbage or like receptacle, of means carried by said hinged cover for removably vertically suspending the cover of the garbage or like receptacle therefrom within saidcontainer and in front of the recep tacle. within said container, whereby the lastnamed cover will be elevated to a convenient position for beingremoved from the suspending means and placed upon said receptacle when the cover of the container is opened.

10. The combination with a container having a hinged cover, a garbage or like receptacle in said container, and a removable cover for said garbage or like receptacle, of means carried by said hinged cover for removably suspending the cover of the garbage or refuse receptacle therefrom and vertically within the container at the front of said receptacle, whereby said last-named cover will be elevated to a position between the line of vision of the operator and the contents of the garbage or refuse receptacle and where the same may be conveniently grasped and removed from the hinged cover for application to the garbage or refuse receptacle when said hinged cover is opened.

11. The combination with a container having a hinged cover, a garbage or like receptacle in said container, and a removable cover for said garbage or like receptacle, of means carried by said hinged cover for removably suspending the cover of the garbage or refuse receptacle therefrom and vertically within the container at the front of said receptacle, whereby said last-named cover will be elevated to a position between the line of vision of the operator and the contents of the garbage or refuse receptacle and where the same may be conveniently grasped and removed from the hinged cover for application to the garbage or refuse receptacle when said hinged cover is opened, said cover suspending means comprising spaced superposed forwardly projecting angular brackets having lateral ends facing toward each other and respectively engageable with opposite surfaces of the rim of said receptacle cover.

12. The combination with a container having a hinged cover, a garbage or like receptacle in said container, and a removable cover for said garbage or like receptacle, of means carried by said hinged cover for removably suspending the cover of the garbage or refuse receptacle therefrom and vertically within the container at the front of said receptacle, whereby said last-named cover will be elevated to a position between the line of vision of the operator and the contents of the garbage or refuse receptacle and where the same may be conveniently grasped and removed from the hinged cover for application to the garbage or refuse receptacle, said cover suspending means comprising spaced superposed forwardly projecting angular brackets having lateral ends facing toward each other and respectively engageable with opposite surfaces of the rim of said receptacle cover, the upper bracket being shorter than the lower bracket and adapted to have its lateral end engaged behind an outturned head on the free edge of the rim of said receptacle cover whereby the latter is sustained substantially at right angles to the hinged cover of the container when the latter is opened or raised.
