To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LAwRnNon Pnooann, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garbage Receptacles, of which the following is a specification.
T his invention relates to new and useful improvements in garbage receptacles.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a garbage receptacle which will be sanitary in every respect.
A further object of the invention is to provide a sliding valve for said receptacle having novel means for normally retaining it in its closed position.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent during the course of the following description.

In the drawings, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a prefer ed embodiment of this invention, and particularly referring to Figs. 1 to 1 inclusive, the numeral 5 designates the lower portion of a metallic receptacle which is provided with a door 6 for closing a portion of the front wall of the same, the said door being hingedly mounted at 7 and provided with a latch mechanism 8 for normally retaining it in its closed position. Slightly spaced below the top edge 5 of this lower portion of the receptacle is an outwardly projecting bead 9 which is adapted for receiving the lower edge of the upper portion 10 of the rece ptacle and for supporting the same. This upper portion 10 ofthe receptacle is provided with a rigid portion 11 forming. a part of the top wall and inclined forwardly for providing. a reduced opening 12 which is closed by a swinging cover 13 having a handle 14- by means of whichit may be moved into its opened position. Depending at an angle from the upper edge of the sloping top wall section 11 is a partition 15 which cooperates with the side walls 16 and front wallli' for forming a hopper '18; The front wall 17 is further provided with a deflector plate 19 employed for reducing the diameter or area oi the discharge opening of said hopper. Suitably secured to the sidewalls 16ott' the upper portion 10 of this receptacle are the legs of angle irons 20 which act as guides for the sliding plate valve 21 having its longitudinal edges bent for forming grooves 22 employed for engaging the laterally projecting flange portionsof the angle iron guides 20. A red 23 projects rearwardly -from the rear edge of the plate valve 21 which is provided with a depending flange 24,-. This rod 23 projects outwardly of the upper portion 10 of the receptacle and is formed into a handle portion 25 at its outer end.
The novel means employed for retaining this plate valve normally closed consists of the piates'26 secured to the. side walls 16 and having axially alined, laterally projecting apertured cars 27 within which are journaled the perpendicularly extending portions 28 of angularly bent rods 29 having their outer free ends bent downwardly, as at 80, for slidably engaging the flange 2 1 formed at the rear edge of the sliding plate valve 21. Coiled around the journaled portion of each perpendicularly extending part 28 of the angularly bent rods is a strand of spring wire 31 having its upper end 32 bearing against a plate 26. This spring wire is further formed with an arm 83 having a hook 34: termed in its outer end for engaging substantially the intermediate portion of the horizontally extending partof the angularly bent rod 29. It will now be seen that when the sliding plate valve 21 is pulled rearwardly by the handle and rod 25 and 23, each angularly bent rod 29 will be caused to pivot in the apertured ears 27 and the downwardly bent ends 30 of the rods will be caused to slide along the flange 24. This pivoting of the angularly bent rods will cause the coil springs 31 to be placed under tension and as soon as the handle portion25 of the rod 23 is released, the coil springs 31 will exert a pressure against the horizontally extending portions of the angularly bent rods 29, by means of bage receptacle to the uprights 35.

The modified form of garbage receptacle illustrated in Figs. 5 to 8 inclusive consists of a pair of uprights 35 which are joined by the casting 36 at their lower ends, the opposite ends of the casting beingprovided with lateral projections 37 employed for fastening the lower portion 38 of the 1e upper portion 39 of this receptacle is secured to the uprights 35 by the brackets 40 which are suitably secured to the uprights 35 for. permitting the upper portion 39 to be removed from the lower portion, the brackets 40 being loosened upon the uprights 35 for this purpose. This upper portion 39 is also provided with a hinged cover 13 having a handle 14, as illustrated iniFigs. 1 to 4 inclusive. A partition 1.5is
provided for the same purpose as the partition 15 in the former form of garbage receptacle illustrated and described, The valve 21 is slidably mounted in the same manner as illustrated and described in Figs. 1 to 4 and is operated by similarstructure as has been previously described, the plates 26 supporting the angularly bent rods 29 and the tensioning means 31*.
Hingedly secured to the casting 36 is a swinging container 41 having a handle 42 by means of which it may be moved into its fully open position. The front wall 17 of the upper receptacle portion 39 is provided with. perpendicularly extending slots 43 employed for receiving the top, side edges 44 of the container 41 when the latter is swung into its fully opened position.
It is now believed that the method of constructing and the manner of operating the garbage receptacle illustrated in the accompanying drawings have been sufficiently described for permitting anyone skilled in the art to make and use the same, and for this reason no further explanation is deemed n cessary.
It is to be understood that the forms of this invention herewith shown and described are to be taken as preferred examples of the same, and that various changes in the shape, size, and arrangementof parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.
Having thus described the invention, I claim 1. In a device of the type described, a rceptacle, a hopper formed in said receptacle, a reciprocable plate valve for closing the discharge opening in said hopper, and resilient means for moving said plate valve into its closed position, said means including a pivoted arm carried by the receptacle and having its outer end freely bearing against and wiping over one end of said plate valve, and resilient means for forcing said outer end of the arm against the valve.
2. In a device of the type described, areceptacle, ahopper formed in said receptacle, a reciprocable plate valve for closing the discharge opening in said hopper, and resilient means for moving said plate valve into its closed position, said resilient means including a pair of angularly bent rods having vertically extending portions rotatably carried by said receptacle and horizon tally extending portions disposed above the plate valve, and angle extensions on the ends of the horizontal portions bearing against and wiping over an end of said plate valve, and coil springs exerting a pressure against the horizontally extending portions of said rods for urging'said plate valve toward its closed position.
