Patented Dec. 2 2, 1925.
, VEGETABLE BI Application filed. January 12, 1925'. .sermin'o; '1,7so:-' l
v To all whom it may concern:
Be i known that L-AUeUs'r B.LAnsoN, -a citizen of the United States, residing at Indianapolisin the county of Marion and Sta'te'of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement inVegetable Bins, of which the following is: a specification;
My invention .relates toan improved vegetable bin for use such as for holding potatoes, onions,'-tunnips, and the like, and has for its objects, the ventilation of the vegetables contained, the separation of dirt and refuse from the vegetables, the handling of the vegetables in quantities quickly by a scoop rather than by hand'in removing the contents from the bin, the prevention of damage tothe contents: by rats and the like, a construction of extreme simplicity permitting the useof all'metal parts as may be cleaned and disinfected without injury thereto, and a construction that may be built in quantity production at atvery low cost, having neatness of appearance as well as being of valuable service in grocery stores, restaurants, and similar agencies wherevegetablesmustbe held in quantities and transferred to other containers in small and varying lots.-
I- accomplish these and'such minor objects ash may be apparent in the following de scription by the means as illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which* Fig. 1 is a perspective view of my improved vegetable binwith fragments removed to disclose the various details of construction; Fig. 2, a fragment 'of the bin with the door in its raised position'preparatory to closing as shown bythe solid lines, and the door further revolved and nearing closure as indicated by the dash 1ines;'Fig. 3, a fragment of the bin-showing thedoor fully-closed: and Fig; 4, an elevation in section of a fragment of a corner iron showing a pin attached thereto about which the door is operated. j
Like characters of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views.
I form a bin by the four walls 5, 6, 7, and 8, preferably ofsheet metal, supported by the angle-iron frame having the vertical corner pieces 9 extending downwardly to act as supporting legs. I'provide a close fitting removable top 10, Fig. 1, here shown partly opened, as the upper enclosure of the bin, but the under side or bottom of the bin is left open.
openingentering upon the slats 11. .this oipening, I secure the; baffle 15' so as to i .Toretain'the vegetables in the bin I use aslatted platform composed of a plurality of slats 1'1 p-roperlygsp'aced apart to permit dirt and refuse to pass downwardly be-,
lower frame-work of angle- irons 13 and 14,
with the rear ends of the upwardly inclined ilatsbearmg agalnst the back wall 8' of the The front wall= 5 is" provided with an Above] 'extend backwa'rdly and downwardly toward the inclined sections of the /slats 11 leaving a" throat 'therebetween such that 30 only a limited quantity of' thevegetables may 'reach the forwardhor'izontalsections of' the slats ll,
Immediately below the platform of slats 11,.I place a sh'allowpan 16. Fig. 1, here I shownpartly withdrawn, so as't'o-"c atch the dirt and refuse that may drop'th'ro'ugh be" tween the slats'11 as the vegetables move thereon. The pan 16 is retained means of the slides 17 formed of angle-iron and secured to thele'gsQ, one on each side, such that the 'pan 16 may be'slidingly withdrawn from the front side of the bin.
The opening in the front Wall '5 has a' doorv 18 for a closure and also for a chute or scooping platform'when open asin Fig.
1. The door 18-has its inner edge or apron 23 resting directly upon'the slats 11, substantiallytw-ithin the bin, and bears against the corner. pieces 9" by, its shoulders 19. Each side'of'the"doo'ra18terminates in an upwardly, vertically extending side 20, which projects past and slidingly contacts the outer, side faces of the corner pieces 9.
and is secured thereto by means of the pin 5 r 21 engaging through the cam slot 22 formed in the side 20. The. pin. '21, Fig. 4;, is '1 formed with a head to retainthe side 20. The cam slot 22 in each door side has a curved central section approaching an arc of a circle, and has 'a straight slot extending outwardly from the" curved portion. of
the slot for the purpose of locking the door in the open and in the closed positions, Figs. 1, and 8. Y
It will be noted in Fig. 1, that the door.
Toclose the door 18, it is first lifted vertically from the position as in Fig. 1 to the position as in Fig. 2, where the curved portion of the cam slot 22 is ready to engage the pin 21, whereupon, the door may be tilted upwardly and pushed inwardly about the pin 21 as indicated by the dash lines, Fig. 2, and then completely closed by allowing the pin 21 to travel the length of thecurved portion of the cam slot 22, into its straight section, when the door will drop vertically downwardly and be locked in its'closed position, as in Fig. 3 Further the door 18 is closed, rats and mice can not gain access to the vegetables within.
Having fully described "my invention in the form now best'known to me, and being aware that it is obvious to vary the structure without departing from the spirit of my invention, I do not desire to. be limited to the precise structure shown and described, nor any more than may be necessitated by the following claims.
I claim:
1. Adoor for. an opening in a side wall of a receptacle, adapted to serve as a scoop board when in an opened position and having an inwardly extending apron, said door having each end terminating in a vertical side member, and having a cam slot in each of said side members to engage about a retaining pin secured to said receptacle, said slot permitting the door to drop down and be locked thereby in an opened position and permitting the door to be raised and passed from the opened position to the closed posi- .tion to be dropped and thereby locked in said closed position.
2.- In a bin open at the'bottom and top and having a side opening, a slatted platform forming the bottom of the bin, said platform being inclined upwardly toward the back and having a horizontal section projecting to the lower edge of the siote opening, a baflie above and directed toward the inclined end of the platform, a removable pan below the platform, adoor for said side opening having an inwardly extending apron resting on said platform' when in an opened position, vertically extending ends of said door, door supporting pins on said bin, said door ends each having a cam slot therethrough engaging said pins and said cam slot being formed with a central section to permit the door being passed from oneposition to another, and an extended slot from each end of the central slot to cause the door to be dropped downwardly as a locking means in both opened and closedpositions. p
3. In a bin open at the bottom and top and having a side opening, a slatted plat form forming the bottom of the bin, said platform being inclined upwardly toward the. back and having a horizontal section projecting to the lower edge of the side opening, a baffle above and directed toward.
the inclined end of the platform, a removable pan below the platform, a door for said side opening having an inwardly extending. apron. resting on said platform when in an opened position, vertically extending ends of said door, door supporting pins on said bin, said door ends each having a cam slot therethrough engaging said pins and said cam slot being formed with a central section to p'ermitthe door being passed from one position to another, and having an extended slot from each end of the central slot to cause the door to be dropped downwardly as a locking means in both opened and closed positions, and said door apron extending over one end of said pan as a-pan locking means when the door is in a closed position.
Signed at Indianapolis, county of Marion, State of Indiana, this the 9th day of January, 1925. I
AUGUST B. LARSON.
