Description
2&33585 J. NIGBOR CLAPPING TOY wr'ch M1 136.,
Filed June 18, 1935 Patented Mar. 10, 1936 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 3 Claims.
This invention relates to toys and more particularly to a toy adapted to be pulled over a plane surface for the purpose of making a noise.
An object of this invention is to provide a toy of this character which may be used by very small children as an amusement and which embodies relatively few parts so that it will not get out of order and may be cheaply manufactured.
Another object of this invention is to provide a device of this character which may have associated therewith a figure which is adapted to be moved up and down and rocked forwardly and rearwardly as the device is pulled over a plane surface.
The above and various other objects and advantages of this invention will in part be described in, and in part be understood from the following detail description of the present preferred embodiment, the same being illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 is a longitudinal section partly in detail taken substantially through the center of a device constructed according to an embodiment of this invention;
Figure 2 is a transverse section taken substantially through the center of the device.
Referring to the drawing wherein like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the numeral l designates generally a hollow body or box which is preferably open at the bottom and the numeral ll designates a shaft which is rotatably mounted in the box near the open bottom thereof The shaft II has a pair of wheels l2 secured one to each end thereof and the wheels l2 are fixed against rotation relative to the shaft I l by means of pins l3 or the like. A draw bar or handle I4 is secured to one end of the body [0 and may be of suitable length so that a child may pull the device over a plane surface.
A vertically movable member l5 in the form of a plate or the like is loosely disposed within the housing or box IB and the box [0 adjacent the lower portion thereof is provided with a plurality of inwardly extending rods or pins I6 which prevent the plate or movable member l5 from dropping out of the open bottom of the box.
The shaft II has secured thereto a clapper or operating member I! which is secured to the shaft ll within the box l0 and this clapper H is adapted to strike the movable member I 5 as the shaft I I is rotated. In this manner the movable member I5 is forced upwardly in the box l0 and the member l5 will fall by gravity so that there will be a constant up and down movement of the member I5 as the housing I0 is pulled over a plane surface.
The box I0 is provided with a top l8 having an elongated slot or opening i9 therethrough and a. stem or standard 20 is secured at one end to the 5 movable member [5 and is adapted to project loosely through the slot 19. The stem or standard 20 has a narrow slit 2| extending downwardly from the upper end thereof and a figure 22 of suitable configuration is adapted to be 10 mounted in this slit 2| so that the figure 22 will move up and down and back and forth as the standard 20 moves up and down and back and forth with the movement of the member I5.
It is to be noted that the opening IS in the top I8 of the box II] is of such an extent as to leave a substantial portion of the top to serve as a clapboard in connection with the plate I5 as it is impelled upward by the rotatable clapper I1, and
it is also to be noted that in the assembled relation of the parts the plate I 5 and its stem 2!] surmounted by the figure 22, are entirely loose and unsupported within the box In save by the clapper I l, and that the opening I9 is larger both in length and Width than the thickness of the stem 20 whereby the plate [5 and stem are not only permitted to have a free up and down movement but a rocking movement in all directions.
In the use of this device the handle or draw bar 14 is grasped by the child and the body or box ll! pulled over the plane surface with the wheels l2 engaging the plane surface. As the box I!) moves forwardly the clapper I! will raise the movable member I 5 in the box Ill and the speed of the box It] will effect a rapid movement of the member I5 so that this member 15 will also strike the under surface of the top l8 to produce the desired clapping sound. As the member l5 moves up and down in the box ill the figure 22 will also move up and down in addition to moving forward and backward as the member I5 is rocked and raised by means of the operating member I1.
I claim:
1. A sounding toy of the character set forth comprising a box provided with an open bottom, a wheel supported shaft, a clapper mounted on and carried by said shaft, the box being provided with a top extending thereacross and having an opening therein, a plate mounted in the box above the clapper and adapted to be engaged by the latter in the rotation of the shaft whereby the rapid rotation of the shaft and clapper will impel the plate upward against the lower side of the top of the box to produce a clapping sound, and a stem carried by and extending upward from the plate and accommodated by the opening in the top of the box.
2. A sounding toy of the character described, comprising a box, a wheel supported shaft journaled in the box, a clapper carried by the shaft, a plate freely movable within the box above the clapper and adapted to be engaged by the latter, the top of the box above the plate having an opening formed therein, a stem secured to the plate and extending upward thru said opening, the opening being longer and wider than the stem whereby the stem and the plate may have both a free rocking and up and down movement in the box, and a figure surmounting the stem above the top of the box.
3. A sounding toy of the character described, comprising a resonating box provided with an open bottom and with inwardly extending pins above the bottom, a Wheel supported shaft journaled in the box near the open bottom thereof, a clapper secured to and carried by the shaft between said pins, a plate mounted freely in the box above the clapper and adapted to be struck by the clapper in rapid rotation of the latter whereby it will be impelled towards and in contact with the underside of the top of the box, said top having an opening formed therein, a stem extending up through said opening from the plate to: which the lower end of the stem is secured, said opening in the top being longer and wider than the diameter of the stem, and a figure carried by the stem above the top of the box.
