In a simple and attactive embodiment of the invention the top and bottom portions are hexagonal in outline, and are permanently closed about four of the six sides. This flap is designed to completely close 10 the opening remaining in the side wall, and has a free end 26 projecting within the side wall when closed, and a locldng tab 28 which may extend without the side wall to hold the flap in position within, as desired.
The flap is maintained in close contact with the margin of the top and bottom through tongues 30 which are designed to extend within the flap when closed, and looking tongues 32 which extend without the flap and are retained 20 by a flexible tie 34. V
Obviously the provision of a multiple-sided box of this character has many advantages, as it permits the use of a side opening and a closure flap which is hinged at the juncture of the flat sides 25 and thus is not readily distinguished. Furthermore, by the provision of more than four sides to the box, the closure flap departs from a Straight side and is better able to conform closely to the top and bottom, and in addition may be 30 locked in satisfactorily closed position by relatively short retaining tongues or the like. Furthermore, the box in transit can be carried by z the flexibletierand due to the permanent closure of the top and bottom which then become the 35 sides, there is no liability of dislodgement and accidental opening of the receptacle as would be the case with a removable cover. When employed for enclosing articles on a shelf, a pile of boxes may be-stacked and individual articles re- 40 moved therefrom without the necesslty of removing the enclosing box from the pile in which it is located.
What is claimed is:-
1. A paper box for the reception of hats and 4:5 the like comprising top and bottom portions hav'- ing more than four straight edges at the marg'in, flat side portions permanently connected to the top and bottom portions, an opening extending throughout at least two of the flat sides, a closure flap hinged at one side of the opening to a flat side portion and having a free end engaging with the side portion at the opposite side of the opening, the closure having two o more flat portions to contact the margin of the t'op and bottom and conforming to the shapeo! the permanent side wall when in closed position, and means for retaining the closure in this position.
2'. A paper box for the reception of hats and the like having hexagonal top and bottom portions, a side wall permanently connected therewith to present four flat iaces, an opening occupying the equivalent of two flat spaces, a closure -flap hinged to the side wall at one end of the opening comprising two flat taces and with a free end adapted to engage with the flat side at the opposite end o'i the opening, and means upon the top and bottom portions to engage and hold the closure flap in close contact therewith.
3. A paper box for the reception of hats and the like comprising top and bottom portions of like contour each having flve or more straight' and coniorming thereto, the closure flap contorming in shape and dimensions to two of the straight side edges when assembled in closed relation to 'present the appearance ot a continuous side wall, and means for connecting the free end of the closure flap to the side wall.
4. A paper box for the'reception oi' hats and the like comprising non-rectangular top and bottom portions oi' like contour, a continuous side wall enclosing the space between the top and bottom portions and permanently connected thereto except for an opening substantially co-extensive in width with that oi' the box, the continuous side wall having a closure flap projecting from the side wall at one end of the opening, the closure flap deviating from a flat plane to coniorm to the contour of'that portion oi' the top and bottom portions throughout the length of the opening to flt closelythereagainst and sim'ulate the appearance of the permanent side wall when in closed position, and means for engaging the closure flap to maintain it in closed position.
