POCKET MATCH POUCH.
, Application filed March 12, 1923. Serial No. 624,458.
To all whom z't may] concern:
Be it known that we, DAVID E. BURNETT and AUoUsr J. KnMMnL, both citizens of the United States of America, and residents of Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Pocket Match Pouches, of which the following is a speci ficationn I This invention relates to flap-closure pouches adapted for convenient use in the pocket to contain matches or the like, and its object is to provide such a pouch with a match-scratch holder-frame or holder-receptacle that is readily mounted and secured in the inner member of the pouch so as to be concealed or covered by the flap-member of the pouch when the latter is closed and its contents thus protected from contact with the inner surface of the users pocket in which the match-pouch is carried, or the accidental removal of said contents otherwise.
The details of structure will be fully hereinafter described and then more particularly pointed out in the claims that follow.
In the accompanying sheet of drawings Figure 1 is a perspective view of our improved pouch, shown in its preferred form and with its flap open for access to the matches within its pocket, and, also, for access to the match-scratch device that forms the essential feature of our invention herein Fig. 2, an inside elevation of the pouch but with the supply of matches and matchscratch device removed or omitted; Fig. 3, a detail perspective view of the matchscratch holder-frame, showing it as it appears prior to insertion and fastening in the vertical, elongated opening made inthe inner-member of the pouch and as brought out clearly in Fig. 2; Fig. 4, ahorizontal, transverse section of the pouch, taken on the line 4, of Fig. 2, but including the matchscratch and its h older-frame that are omitted from said Fig. 2; and Fig. 5, a vertical section taken on the line 5, 5, of Fig. 2, but with the flap closed and with the matchscratch and its holder-frame intact, or as' the entire device appears inuse, but omitting the matches.
6 indicates the outer or main member; 7 the inner-member; and 8 the flap-member of a pouch adapted to containmatches, or the like, in convenient form for carrying in the pocket. The said members 6, 7 and 8 of the pouch are of leather or other suitable pliable or flexible material, the flap-member 8 being an upper integral extension of the main-member 6 and the member 7 being an innerone that is duly stitched or otherwise secured along three of its edges to form a pocket or receptacle for the matches, as customary in this type of leather pocketpouches.
An ordinary snap-fastening is provided to hold the flap 8 in closed relation and is composed of postmember 10 and socket-member 11, that duly register and interlock when the flap 8 is closed. This snap-fastening may, of course, be dispensed with, if de-' sired, as it forms no really essential feature of our invention herein although it is exceedingly useful otherwise to keep the pouch closed against the displacement of the matches.
A vertically-elongated rectangular opening 12 is provided in the said inner-member 7 of the pocket-part of the device, as best displayed in Fig. 2. This opening 12 is preferably located'a little to one side the vertical center of the said inner-member 7 and is adapted to accommodate a match-scratch holder-frame that is composed of a fiat bacl wall or main-member 13, vertical, integral, forwardly-extending, grooved or guttered side-walls and a horizontal, integral, forwardly-extending bottom-wall, (the holderframe itself being as best shown in Fig. 3).
The said holder-frame is made of metal and preferably of aluminum that is best adapted to pocket-service. Its said sidewalls are made up of corresponding -shape formations that provide the vertical grooves or guide-ways 14 for the opposite vertical edges of the match-scratch filler 15 when it is inserted into the open top 16 of the holderframe, and its said lower or horizontal bot tom-wall is made up of a similar S-formation that provides a transverse groove or seating-cavity 17 for the bottom or lower edge of thesaid match-scratch filler 15. The filler 15 can be very easily inserted in the holder-frame from its top-opening 16 and just as easily withdrawn for replacing when used up or otherwise impaired for further use. The filler is preferably of a. material adapted for special use in connection with a supply of what are commonly known as safety matches in the pouch-pocket, but it is obvious, as well as intended, that sandpaper or emery-cl0th can be used in the holder-frame just as well and with the same effect on the ordinary match, but the latter would be rather too dangerous to carry in the pocket inclosed in a leather. or similar soft, flexible, combustible pouch.
The holder-frame is provided with integral flange-formations 18 along its side edges and with a similar flange-formation 19 along its lower edge, such flange- formations 18 and 19 being adapted to form closure fastening-flaps along the side edges and the lower edge, respectively, of the opening 12 made in the inner wall or member 7 of the pocket-part of the pouch, as best shown in Figs. 4: and 5. The metal in these flaps being somewhat pliable is easily set into fastening-place on the respective edges of the said opening 12 and easily opened when it is desired or necessary to remove the holder-frame.
Instead of using a removable scratchfi'ller in the holder-frame it is obvious that the face of the body-portion or main-memtherethrough by said seating-cavity, and
fastening-flaps on the side and lower edges of the holder-frame to secure the device in place in an elongated opening made in the inner-member of the pocket-member.
2. A pocket match-pouch comprising a pocket-member, a closure-flap for said pocket-member, a' snap-fastening for said closure-flap, a metal holder-frame mounted on the inner-member of the pocketmember and having side guide-ways. and a lower seating-cavity, and a scratch-filler inserted in the said guide-ways and lower seatingcavity of the holder-frame.
