Description
. 24, c ROHAN BABY CARRIAGE PROTECTOR Filed Jan. 29, 1935 Patented Dec. 24, 1935 1 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 3 Claims.
This invention relates to infants carriages, cribs or the like and particularly to a sanitary and ornamental attachment designed to protect the bodies of such devices and to provide against injury to the infant during his occupancy of the carriage or crib. Since the invention was primarily designed for use in connection with baby carriages, in the further reference to the invention it will be described as associated with a baby carriage, it being understood, however, that it is of utility in cribs, bassinets, and the like.
It is an object of the invention to provide a lining for a baby carriage associated with a mattress or pad casing, the latter of which is waterproof so that it can be readily cleaned without deterioration or without affecting the cushion or mattress contained therein.
The advantageous qualities of the invention may be summarized as, being readily removable, as being sanitary and easily kept clean, as being decorative in character as well as practical in effect, as a protector for the carriage material, and as eliminating the use of pads and obviating the wetting of pillows or mattresses.
It is a further object of the invention to provide a device having the foregoing advantages which can be expeditiously applied to or removed from the carriage and held in place without the use of buttons, clamps, hooks, nails or materials which would constitute a danger for an infant.
It is a further object of this invention to provide a carriage lining which can be expeditiously manipulated for applying or removing a pad or mattress and for inserting or removing a pillow after the protector has been secured in place. With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists in the details of construction, and in the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.
In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this application, wherein like characters denote corresponding parts in the several views, and in which Figurel illustrates a perspective View of a baby carriage body with a device embodying the invention applied thereto;
Figure 2 illustrates a longitudinal sectional view thereof; and
Figure 3 illustrates a perspective view of a fragment of the body with a fragment of a device embodying the invention applied thereto.
In the drawing 5 denotes the body of a baby carriage having a protector applied thereto, the
of the body comprises an ornamental lining 8 extending from the mattress cover and of such depth as to overlie the inner surfaces of the body and preferably extending over the top edge and terminating a suitable distance on the outer side of the body. The inner edge of the material forming the protector is secured to the mattress cover along its end and two of its sides, whereas an opening 9 is formed in the protector preferably at the head end thereof, the said opening being closed by a flap and apron l0 whose lower or inner edge is secured to the end of the mattress above the fastening l. The protector at the upper edge of the opening 9 is preferably provided with a reenforcement or binding II to which there are attached members such as l2 of snap fastenings whereas the upper edge of the flap is also reenforced or bound as at 13 and is provided with coacting snap fastening elements or members 14 adapted to be attached to those that are located at the upper edge of the opening of the protector.
By reason of the provision of the apron, the head. end of the protector is displaceable for the insertion or removal of a pillow and also to: permit access to the fastening of the cover 6 in order that the pad or mattress may be removed or inserted through the opening of the protector at the head as described.
It is shown in the drawing that that portion of the'protector which overlies the edge of the body is gathered or shirred and made ornamental in character and the edge is provided with-an elastic band l5 of such size as to embrace the outer surface of the carriage body near the upper edge thereof and by this means the protector is held in place though readily removable by means which obviates the use of unsightly clamps or devices which might injure the occupant of the carriage. If proper fabrics are used in the protector, it will enhance the appearance of the ensemble, beside having .the utilitarian feature to which reference has been made.
In the specification, the terms pad or mattress case or cover and protector have been alternately used as designating the element 6. In the appended claims, this element will be referred to as a mattress protector, which term is intended to comprehend any of the foregoing designations.
I claim:
1. In a protector for a baby carriage body, a water-proof bedding casing open at one end, means for holding the end closed, a protector having its inner edge secured to the casing except atthe head portion thereof and extending over the inner surface of the baby carriage and overlying the edge thereof, the said protector be-' brace the body of the carriage, the head end of the said protector having an opening, an apron having its inner edge secured to the casing above the fastening closing the casing and. adapted to close the opening in the protector, and means for fastening the upper edge of the apron to the protector for closing said opening.
2. In an attachment for baby carriages, a Water-proof mattress protector, an ornamental carriage-body lining having its inner edges secured to the mattress protector and adapted to overlie the side of the carriage body and the top edge thereof, the said lining having an opening at the head portion thereof, an apron having its inner edge secured to the said mattress protector, fastenings by which the apron is secured to the lining to close the opening in the lining, and an elastic band secured to the 1in-, ing at the outer edge thereof and operative to embrace the carriage body to retain the lining in place.
3. In an attachment for baby carriages, a mattress protector consisting of a casing into which a mattress or pad may be inserted, said protector being open at one end, means for holding the for frictionally retaining the lining in place, said close the said opening, and means for holding i the apron closed.
