(Cl. 5-335) This invention relates to an improved type of mattress protector structure, for locally waterproofing and protecting a portion of a mattress. A protector embodying the invention may for example be utilized on sick bed mattresses, on crib mattresses or childrens mattresses, on beds of the aged or incontinent, etc.

The protectors of the invention are improvements on the type of protector disclosed in U.S. Patent Number 2,924,833, issued February 16, 1960 t-o M. I. Klogether on Draw Sheet and Mattress Protector, f

In the above identified patent, there is disclosed a protector assembly including a exible sleeve which is adapted to be slipped onto a mattress to a position in which the sleeve encircles a longitudinally central portion of the mattress. This protector has an upper waterproof portion which extends across the top of the mattress to render waterproof the central portion thereof. In conjunction with the protector sleeve, the above identitied patent discloses a draw sheet which is adapted to extend across the upper surface of the waterproof portion of the protector, and is connectible to the sleeve in a manner detachably securing the draw sheet in that position.

A major object of the present invention is to provide an improved arrangement including a sleeve of the above discussed type, and in which the sleeve is so designed as to protect and render waterproof both sides of the mattress, so that the mattress may be turned over at intervals, with the sleeve remaining on the mattress, and with the sleeve protecting the mattress in both of its relatively inverted positions. A further object of the invention is to provide a draw sheet which is usable in conjunction with-such a dual position invertible mattress protecting sleeve, and which can be detachably secured to the sleeve, in a position of extension across the upper surface of the sleeve in either of the two possible positions of the mattress. Preferably, the draw sheet is constructed to extend downwardly along the opposite side edges of the mattress in each of its possible positions, to cover those edges of the sleeve in both positions.

Another object of the invention is to so design the sleeve as to enable its removal more easily lthan in the above identified patent structure, specifically by forming the sleeve to be interrupted or discontinuous at one location about the mattress, and to carry fastener elements at that location which are capable of detachably securing two separable ends or edges of the sleeve material together to either complete the sleeve or release it for easy removal.

In order to attain the desired waterproofing function in both of two relatively inverted positions of the mattress, the sleeve has two waterproof portions, which extend across both the upper side and underside of the mattress, and each of which is adapted to serve as a mattress protector when the mattress is turned to a position such that that particular waterproof area is facing upwardly. Preferably, the sleeve is waterproof along its entire encircling path about the mattress, to waterproof both the top and bottom of the mattress, and its opposite side edges. Best results have been attained by utilizing as the waterprong material a woven fabric which is coated with a uid tight resinous plastic material.

The draw sheet is detachably securable to opposite sides of the protector sleeveby appropriate fastener means,`

preferably snap fastener elements, including elements positioned to appropriately secure the draw sheet in place both of its positions. For best retention of the draw sheet, two sets of fastener elements are provided at each side of the sleeve, with one of the sets being used in a lirst position of the mattress, and the other set being used in the inverted position of the mattress. It is also contemplated that in some instances a sleeve embodying certain of the features of the present invention may be employed, typically in hotels, motels, or the like, without the accompanying draw sheet.

The above and other features and objects of the invention will be better understood from the following detailed description of the typical embodiments illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in whioh:

FIG. 1 is a perspective view showing a mattress provided with a protector assembly constructed in accord- I section taken on line 2 2 of FIG. 1, and showing the mattress and sleeve in a first position;

FIG. 4 is a view similar to FIG. 3, but showing the mattress inverted;

FIG. 5 illustrates in perspective the draw sheet of FIG. 1, as it appears when removed from the mattress and placed in horizontal or flat condition;

FIG. 6 is a fragmentary enlarged section taken on line 6 6 of FIG. 5;

FIG. 7 is a view similar to FIG. 1, but showing another variational arrangement embodying certain features of the invention;

Referring first to FIGS. l through 6, and particularly to FIG. 1, I have represented by the numeral 1 a conventional mattress which is typical-ly illustrated in the rst figure as .having a conventional bottom sheet 31 applied thereto. For simiplicity of illustration this sheet 31 has been omitted from FIGS. 2, 3 and 4.

To protect the mattress 1 and sheet 31 from moisture, there is applied to lthe outside of the sheet, about its longitudinally central area, a protector assembly constructed in accordance with the invention and including a waterproof protector sleeve 2 and a draw sheet 3. As will be apparent, the sleeve 2 completely encricles the central portion of the mattress, and is a sufficiently tight fit on the mattress to be frictionally retained against accidental displacement to any position other than that illustrated in FIG. 1.

Sleeve 2 is illustrated as being formed of a single rectangular piece of flexible waterproof sheet material, defined at its top and bottom by two preferably parallel straight edges 32 and 33 which extend entirely about the mattress. At one side of the mattress, the material forming waterproof protector 2 is interrupted or discontinuous, to form two reinforced detachable terminal edges 6 (FIG. 2) which are secured together by conventional snap fasteners 7. Each of the edges 6 may be formed by doubling back the edge of the waterproof material on itself, to form a multiple layer edge hem, which may be stitched in the doubled condition as indicated at 34. An additional layer or layers of intermediate material may be provided as indicated at 35, to strengthen the sleeve at the fastener locations. Edges 6 extend perpendicular to edges 32 and 33, as will be obvious from FIG. 1, and fasteners 7 are attached to edges 6 at a series of space locations. Thus, edges 6 and the series of fasteners 7 extend longitudinally of mattress 1 when the protector 2 is in position on the mattress. Each of the snap fasteners 7 includes a first section 36 attached to an outer one of the edges 6, and typically forming the female half of the snap fastener, and a second section 37 attached to the second or inner edge portion 6, and forming the male half of the snap fastener assembly. In view of the con- Ventionality of such fasteners, they have not been shown in detail in the figures.

As seen best in FIGS. 3 and 4, the mattress is of essentially rectangular tranverse vertical section. The edges 6 and their carried fasteners 7 may be located approximately midway between the upper and lower edges of one of the sides of the mattress (FIG. 2).

As stated previously, the material of which protector 2 is formed is preferably a woven fabric rendered waterproof by a iexible air and moisture impervious waterproof coating of resinous plastic material. The currently preferred fabric is a ticking, coated with a polymerized poly vinyl chloride resin, suitably plasticized and stabilized. This material is designed to withstand high temperatures such as may be encountered in sterilizing the protector in an autoclave.

The draw sheet 3 may be formed of conventional sheeting, and is normally not waterproof, but is designed to be removed and replaced when it becomes wet. As seen in FIG. 5, draw sheet 3 may have an essentially rectangular shape, defined in part by two parallel top and

38 and 39 which approximately coincide with edges 32 and 33 respectively of protector 2. At its opposite ends, draw sheet 3 has two

40 and 41, the material of draw sheet 3 may be doubled or trebled back on itself to form a multiple layer reinforced hem area (as seen in FIG. 2) for carrying the female halves 17 of two series of snap fasteners for securing the draw sheet in place. As in the case of edges 6, the

40 and 41 may be stitched in their doubled or hemmed condition, by stitching represented at 42 in FIG. 2. The length of draw sheet 3 transversely of the mattress, that is, between

40 and 41, is suflicient to enable the draw sheet to extend entirely across the width of the upper side of the mattress. and then extend downwardly at both sides of the mattress to approximately the bottom edge 5 of each side of the mattress. The two series of female snap fastener elements 17 are thus received near the bottom of the side of the mattress, and extend longitudinally along that bottom edge 5.

For engagement with snap fastener elements 17 of the draw sheet, sleeves 2 carries, at each sid'e of the mattress, two additional vertically spaced sets of male snap fastener elements 43 and 44. At the location of the lower set of elements 43, the waterproof material of protector 2 is folded back on itself, as seen in FIG. 2, and stitched longitudinally of the mattress at 45, to form a iiap to which the snap fastener elements are secured. This iiap is adapted to swing outwardly in the manner indicated in broken lines in FIG. 2, and indicated in full lines in the left hand' lower portion of FIG. 3. This ap is designated by the number 46 in the figures, and normally extends upwardly adjacent the portion 47 of the sleeve material. A similar ap 48 is formed near the upper edge of each side of the mattress, being stitched at 49, and carries the upper set of fastener elements 44. This ap 48 projects downwardly, but can swing outwardly. The two series of elements 43 and 44, and the aps by which they are carried, extend longitudinally of the mattress at its opposite sides, and at one side are received respectively beneath and above, and parallel to, the previously mentioned fasteners 7. If desired, the

46 and 48 may be reinforced by additional sheet material stitched between the doubled layers of the main waterproof material forming sleeve 2, this additional material typically being represented at 50.

To now describe the manner of use of the assembly shown in FIGS. 1 through 6, the waterproof protector sleeve 2 may be easily applied to the mattress by slipping a lower portion of the waterproof protector under the mattress, placing the top portion over the upper side of the mattress, and then snapping

36 and 37 together along a vertically central portion of one side of the mattress. This protector is located approximately midway between the opposite ends of the mattress. Next, the draw sheet is placed over the top of the waterproof protector, and snapped in position as shown in FIG. 3, by attaching snap fastener elements 17 to the lower set of elements 43. Sheet 31 may be applied to the bed either before or after application of the protector structure, since the sheet 31 may be easily slipped under protector sleeve 2, and tucked in place.

If draw sheet 3 becomes wet in use, it may be easily removed by disconnecting snap elements 17 from elements 43, the upper surface of the waterproof protector 2 may be washed clean and dried, and a new draw sheet 3 may be reapplied. This procedure may be repeated many times without the necessity for replacement of the main sheet 31, which remains dry throughout.

When it is desired to invert the mattress, the mattress may be turned over to the position illustrated in FIG. 4, with waterproof protector 2 remaining attached to the mattress, and being turned with it. The draw sheet 3 is then connected to the upper side of the mattress and waterproof protector, to extend over the waterproof portion of protector 2 which initially was at the bottom side of the mattress, but now is at its upper side. Sheet 3 is in this case snapped to the fasteners 44 which were initially near the upper edge of the mattress, but now are at its lower edge. Thus, in either'position of the mattress, the snap fasteners are covered by the sides of the draw sheet.

The closely fitting relationship of both waterproof protector 2 and draw sheet 3 with respect to the mattress prevents either of these units from forming folds or creases which would be uncomfortable to the person using the bed, as occurs in the use of most conventional Waterproof protectors and draw sheets.

With reference now to FIGS. 7 through 9, I have shown in those figures a variational form of the invention which is designed for use without a draw sheet. More particularly, the arrangement of FIGS. 7 through 9 includes a waterproof typically rectangular protector sleeve 15 which may be the same as sleeve 2 of the first form of the invention except for the deletion of the

46 and 48 and their carried fastener elements. Protector 15 completely encircles the mattress, and lits closely thereabout, but is interrupted at one side of the mattress to form two doubled and stitched and typically reinforced, edges 18 and 21, carrying

interengageable fastener elements

51 and 52. These two series of fastener elements extend longitudinally of the mattress, and are desirably received midway between the upper and lower edges of one side of the mattress.

It is contemplated that the portector 15 of FIGS. 7 through 9 may typically be utilized in motels, hotels, etc., in which the waterproof protector would be placed about the mattress beneath the main sheet 53. The sheet could thus be changed repeatedly, while always protecting the central portion of the mattress against damage. Also, the mattress can be turned over to an inverted condition, and in either of its two possible relatively inverted positions will have its upperside protected by waterproof sleeve 15.

46 and 48 to be swung outwardly, as shown in the left hand portion of FIG. 3, facilitates connection of the draw sheet to the waterproof protector, since as each of the individual snap fastener elements 43 or 44 is connected to the draw sheet, a person may slip one or more of his fingers behind the

46 or 48 to grip the fastener better and back it up as a mating fastener is pressed thereagainst and connected thereto.

It is contemplated that, in the broadest aspects of the invention, there may be substituted for the various snap fasteners illustrated in the drawings other types of fasteners, such as hooks and eyes, clasps, slides, ties, etc. However, in a more specific sense, a particular feature of the invention resides in the preferred use of snap fasteners.

We claim:

l. A protector for covering a mattress which may be turned between two relatively inverted positions, comprising a sleeve adapted to encircle the mattress at an area to be protected and adapted to be inverted with the mattress, said sleeve having a first waterproof portion which, in a first position of the mattress and sleeve, extends across the upper side of the mattress, and in a second inverted position extends across the underside of the mattress, said sleeve having a second waterproof portion which extends across the underside of the mattress in said first position and across its upper side in said second position, a draw sheet to extend across the upper side of said first waterproof portion, above the mattress, in said first position of the mattress, and to extend across the upper side of said second waterproof portion, above the mattress, in said second position, and fastener means for detachably securing said draw sheet to the sleeve when the draw sheet is disposed above said first portion of the sleeve in said first position of the mattress and also when said draw sheet isreceived above said second portion in said second position of the mattress.

2. A protector for covering a mattress which may be turned between two relatively inverted positions, comprising a sleeve adapted to encircle the mattress at an area to be protected and adapted to be inverted with the mattress, said sleeve having a first waterproof portion which, in a first position of the mattress and sleeve, extends across the upper side of the mattress, and in a second inverted position extends across the underside of the mattress, said sleeve having a second waterproof portion which extends across the underside of the mattress in said first position and across its upper side in said second position, a draw sheet to extend across the upper side of said first waterproof portion, above the mattress, in said first position of the mattress, and to extend across the upper side of said second waterproof portion, above the mattress, in said second position, and interengageable fastener means on said draw sheet and sleeve at opposite sides of the mattress and on said draw sheet near opposite ends thereof detachably interengageable to secure said draw sheet to the sleeve when the draw sheet is disposed above said first portion of the sleeve in said first position of the mattress and also when said draw sheet is received above said second portion in said second position of the mattress.

3. A protector for covering a mattress which may be turned between two relatively inverted positions, comprising a sleeve adapted to encircle the mattress at an area to be protected and adapted to be inverted with the mattress, said sleeve having a first waterproof portionwhich, in a first position of the mattress and sleeve, extends across the upper side of the mattress, and in a second inverted position extends across the underside of the mattress, said sleeve having a second waterproof portion which extends across the underside of the mattress in said first position and across its upper side in said second position, a draw sheet to extend across the upper side of said first waterproof portion, above the mattress, in said first position of the mattress, and to extend across the upper side of said second waterproof portion, above the mattress, in said second position, and interengageable snap fasteners on said sleeve at opposite sides of the mattress and on said draw sheet near opposite ends thereof detachably interengageable to secure said draw sheet to the sleeve when the draw sheet is disposed above said first portion of the sleeve in said first position of the mattress and also when said draw sheet is received above said second portion in said second position of the mattress.

4. A protector for covering a mattress which may be turned between two relatively inverted positions, comprising a sleeve adapted to encircle the mattress at an area to be protected and adapted to be inverted with the mattress, said sleeve having a first waterproof portion which, in a first position of the mattress and sleeve, extends across the upper side of the mattress, and in a second inverted position extends across the underside of the mattress, said sleeve having a second waterproof portion which extends across the underside of the mattress in said first position and across its upper side in said second position, a draw sheet to extend across the upper side of said first waterproof portion, above the mattress, in said first position of the mattress, and to extend across the upper side of said second waterproof portion, above the mattress, in said second position, first fastener elements carried by said draw sheet at opposite sides of the mattress, second fastener elements carried by said sleeve at opposite sides of the mattress and interengageable with said first elements to detachably secure said draw sheet to the sleeve when the draw sheet is disposed above said first portion of the sleeve in said first position of the mattress, and third fastener elements carried by the sleeve at opposite sides of the mattress and interengageable with said first elements to detachably secure said draw sheet to the sleeve when the draw sheet is disposed above said second portion of the sleeve in said second position of the mattress.

5. A protector for covering a mattress which may be turned between two relatively inverted positions, comprising a sleeve adapted to encircle the mattress at an area to be protected and adapted to be inverted with the mattress, said sleeve having a first waterproof portion which, in a first position of the mattress and sleeve, extends across the upper side of the mattress, and in a second inverted position extends across the underside of the mattress, said sleeve having a second waterproof portion which extends across the underside of the mattress in said rst position and across its upper side in said second position, a draw sheet to extend across the upper side of said first waterproof portion, above the mattress, in said first position of the mattress, and to extend across the'upper side of said second waterproof portion, above the mattress, in said second position, first fastener elements carried by said draw sheet at opposite sides of the mattress, second fastener elements carried by said sleeve at opposite sides of the mattress and interengageable with said first elements to detachably secure said draw sheet to the sleeve when the draw sheet is disposed above said first portion of the sleeve in said first position of the mattress, and third fastener elements carried by the sleeve at opposite sides of the mattress and interengageable with said first elements to detachably secure said draw sheet to the sleeve when the draw sheet is disposed above said second portion of the sleeve in said second position of the mattress, said second fastener elements being located lower than said third elements and near the bottom of the mattress in said first position of the mattress, and said third elements being located lower than said second elements and near the bottom of the mattress in said second position thereof.

6. A protector for covering a mattress which may be turned between two relatively inverted positions, comprising a sleeve adapted to encircle the mattress at an area to be protected and adapted to be inverted wit-h the mattress, said sleeve having a first waterproof portion which, in a first position of the mattress and sleeve, extends across the upper side of the mattress, and in a second inverted position extends across the underside of the mattress, said sleeve having a second waterproof portion which extends across the underside of the mattress in said first position and across its upper side in said second position, a draw sheet to extend across the upper` side of said first waterproof portion, above the mattress, in said first position of the mattress, and to extend across the upper side of said second waterproof portion, above the mattress, in said second position, first fastener elements carried by said draw sheet at opposite sides of the mattress, second fastener elements carried by said sleeve at opposite sides of the mattress .and interengageable with said first elements to detachably secure said draw sheet to the sleeve when the draw sheet is disposed above said first portion of the sleeve in said first position of the mattress, and third fastener elements carried by the sleeve at opposite sides of the mattress and interengageable with said first elements to detachably secure said draw sheet to the sleeve when the draw sheet is disposed above said second portion of the sleeve in said second position of the mattress, said second fastener elements being located lower than said third elements and near the bottom of the mattress in said first position of the mattress, and said third elements being located lower than said second elements and near the bottom of the mattress in said second position thereof, said sleeve having two fiaps secured thereto at each side of the mattress and located one above the other and extending longitudinally of the mattress and carrying said second and third fastener elements respectively.

7. A protector for covering a mattress which may be turned between two relatively inverted positions, comprising a sleeve adapted to encircle the mattress at an area to be protected and adapted to be inverted with the mattress, said sleeve being waterproof continuously about the mattress and having a first waterproof portion which, in a first position of the mattress and sleeve, extends across the upper side of the mattress, and in a second inverted position extends across the underside of the mattress, said sleeve having a second waterproof portion which extends across the underside of the mattress in said first position and across its upper side in said second position, a draw sheet to extend across the upper side of said first waterproof portion, above the mattress, in said first position of the mattress, and to extend across the upper side of said second waterproof portion, above the mattress, in said second position, and fastener means for detachably securing said draw sheet to the sleeve when the draw sheet is disposed above said first portion of the sleeve in said first position of the mattress and' also when said draw sheet is received above said second portion in said second position of the mattress.

8. A protector for covering a mattress which may be turned between two relatively inverted positions, comprising a sleeve adapted to encircle the mattress at an area to be protected and adapted to be inverted with the mattress, said sleeve having a first waterproof portion which, in a first position of the mattress and sleeve, extends across the upper side of the mattress, and in a second inverted position extends across the underside of the mattress, said sleeve having a second waterproof portion which extends across the underside of the mattress in said first position and across its upper side in said second position, a draw sheet to extend across the upper side of said first waterproof portion, above the mattress, in said first position of the mattress, and to extend across the upper side of said second waterproof portion, above the mattress, in said second position, and fastener means for detachably securing said draw sheet to the sleeve when the draw sheet is disposed above said first portion of the sleeve in said first position of the mattress and also when said draw sheet is received above said second portion in said second position of the mattress, said sleeve being interrupted at one point about the mattress to form two separable ends of the sleeve, there being fastenings on the sleeve for detachably securing said separable ends together.

9. A protector for covering a mattress which may be turned between two relatively inverted positions, comprising a sleeve adapted to encircle the mattress at an area to be protected and adapted to be inverted with the mattress, said sleeve having a first waterproof portion which, in a first position of the mattress and sleeve, extends across the upper side of the mattress, and in a second inverted position extends across the underside of the mattress, said sleeve having a second waterproof portion which extends across the underside of the mattress in said first position and across its upper side in said second position, a draw sheet to extend across the upper side of said first waterproof portion, above the mattress, in said first position of the mattress, and to extend across the upper side of said second waterproof portion, above the mattress, in said second position, and fastener means for detachably securing said draw sheet to the sleeve when the draw sheet is disposed above said first portion of the sleeve in said first position of the mattress and also when said draw sheet is received above said second portion in said second position of the mattress, said sleeve being interrupted at one side of the mattress to form two separable ends of the sleeve, there being fastenings on the sleeve at said side of the mattress for detachably securing said separable ends together.

10. A protector for covering a mattress which may be turned between two relatively inverted positions, comprising a sleeve adapted to encircle the mattress at an area to be protected and adapted to be inverted with the mattress, said sleeve having a first waterproof portion which, in a first position of the mattress and sleeve, extends across the upper side of the mattress, and in a second inverted position extends across the underside of the mattress, said sleeve having a second waterproof portion which extends across the underside of the mattress in said first position and across its upper side in said second position, a draw sheet to extend across the upper side of said first waterproof portion, above the mattress, in said first position of the mattress, and to extend across the upper side of said second waterproof portion, above the mattress, in said second position, first fastener elements carried by said draw sheet at opposite sides of the mattress, second fastener elements carried by said sleeve at opposite sides of the mattress and interengageable with said first elements to detachably secure said draw sheet to the sleeve when the draw sheet is disposed above said first portion of the sleeve in said first position of the mattress, and third fastener elements carried by the sleeve at opposite sides of the mattress and interengageable with said first elements to detachably secure said draw sheet to the sleeve when the draw sheet is disposed above said second portion of the sleeve in said second position of the mattress, said second fastener elements being lo. cated lower than said third elements and near the bottom of the mattress in said first position of the mattress, and said third elements being located lower than said' second elements and near the bottom of the mattress in said second position thereof, said sleeve being interrupted at one side of the mattress between said second and third fastener elements to form two separable ends of the sleeve, there being fastenings on the sleeve vertically between said second and third fastener elements for detachably securing said separable ends together.

A protector for covering a mattress which may be turned between two relatively inverted positions, comprising a sleeve adapted to encircle the mattress at an area to be protected and adapted to be inverted with the mattress, said sleeve being waterproof continuously about the mattress and having a first waterproof portion which, in a first position of the mattress and sleeve, extends across the upper side of the mattress, and in a second inverted position extends across the underside of the mattress, said sleeve having a second waterproof portion which extends across the underside of the mattress in said first position and across its upper side in said second position, a draw sheet to extend across the upper side of said first waterproof portion, above the mattress, in said first position of the mattress, and to extend across the upper side of said second waterproof portion, above the mattress, in said second position, rst snap fastener elements carried by said draw sheet at opposite sides of the mattress, second snap fastener elements carried by said sleeve at opposite sides of the mattress and interengageable with said rst elements to detachably secure said draw sheet to the sleeve when the draw sheet is disposed above said iirst portion of the sleeve in said first position of the mattress, and third snap fastener elements carried by the sleeve at opposite sides of the mattress and interengageable with said first elements to detachably secure said draw sheet to the sleeve when the draw sheet is disposed above said second portion of the sleeve in said' second position of the mattress, said second fastener elements being located lower than said third elements and near the bottom of the mattress in said first position of the mattress, and said third elements being located lower than said second elements and near the bottom of the mattress in said second position thereof, said sleeve being interrupted at one side of the mattress between said second and third fastener elements to form two separable ends of the sleeve, there being fastenings on the sleeve vertically between said second and third fastener elements for detachably securing said separable ends together, said sleeve having two aps secured thereto at each side of the mattress and located one above the other and extending longitudinally of the mattress and carrying said second and third fastener elements respectively.

12. A protector as recited in claim 11, in which said sleeve is formed of plastic coated woven fabric.

13. A protector assembly for a mattress, comprising a sleeve adapted to completely encircle the mattress at an area to be protected, said sleeve having a water proof rst portion to extend transversely across the top of the mattress, a second portion to extend transversely across the bottom of the mattress, and side portions to extend vertically at opposite sides of the mattress, said sleeve being interrupted along one of said sides of the mattress to form two edges of the sleeve extending longitudinally of the mattress along said one side thereof and separable for removal of the sleeve from the mattress, fastener means on said edges for detachably securing said edges together, a draw sheet adapted to extend across the upper side of said waterproof rst portion of the sleeve above the mattress and having opposite edges adapted to extend longitudinally of the mattress along said opposite sides thereof, and additional fastener means for detachably securing said edges of said draw sheet to said sleeve at said opposite sides of the mattress in a relation enabling detachment of the draw sheet from said sleeve without detachment of said first mentioned fastener means and removal'of said sleeve from the mattress.

14. A protector assembly as recited in claim 13, in which said first portion, second portion and side portions of said sleeve are all formed of a waterproof sheet material.

15. A protector assembly as recited in claim 14, in which said first mentioned fastener means comprise a irst series of spaced snap fasteners secured to said edges of the sleeve, said additional fastener means comprising two additional series of spaced snap fasteners for securing said edges of said draw sheet to said two side portions respectively of the sleeve.

A protector assembly as recited in claim 13, in which said first mentioned fastener means comprise a rst series of spaced snap fasteners secured to said edges of the sleeve, said additional fastener means comprising two additional series of spaced snap fasteners for securing said edges of said draw sheet to said two side portions respectively of the sleeve.

Claims

1. A PROTECTOR FOR COVERING A MATTRESS WHICH MAY BE TURNED BETWEEN TWO RELATIVELY INVERTED POSITIONS, COMPRISING A SLEEVE ADAPTED TO ENCIRCLE THE MATTRESS AT AN AREA TO BE PROTECTED AND ADAPTED TO BE INVERTED WITH THE MATTRESS, SAID SLEEVE HAVING A FIRST WATERPROOF PORTION WHICH, IN A FIRST POSITION OF THE MATTRESS AND SLEEVE, EXTENDS ACROSS THE UPPER SIDE OF THE MATTRESS, AND IN A SECOND INVERTED POSITION EXTENDS ACROSS THE UNDERSIDE OF THE MATTRESS, SAID SLEEVE HAVING A SECOND WATERPROOF PORTION WHICH EXTENDS ACROSS THE UNDERSIDE OF THE MATTRESS IN SAID FIRST POSITION AND ACROSS ITS UPPER SIDE IN SAID SECOND POSITION, A DRAW SHEET TO EXTEND ACROSS THE UPPER SIDE OF SAID FIRST WATERPROOF PORTION, ABOVE THE MATTRESS, IN SAID FIRST POSITION OF THE MATTRESS, AND TO EXTEND ACROSS THE UPPER SIDE OF SAID SECOND WATERPROOF PORTION, ABOVE THE MATTRESS, IN SAID SECOND POSITION, AND FASTENER MEANS FOR DETACHABLY SECURING SAID DRAW SHEET TO THE SLEEVE WHEN THE DRAW SHEET IS DISPOSED ABOVE SAID FIRST PORTION OF THE SLEEVE IN SAID FIRST POSITION OF THE MATTRESS AND ALSO WHEN SAID DRAW SHEET IS RECEIVED ABOVE SAID SECOND PORTION IN SAID SECOND POSITION OF THE MATTRESS.
