The present invention relates generally to improvements in mattresses and mattress covers, and it relates more particularly to an improved mattress cover for use with crib s'ize mattresses.

It is the conventional practice to enclose crib mattresses in cloth or other flexible envelopes which are attached to and form a permanent part of the mattress. Unless properly covered the mattress is subjected to frequent wetting and exposure to pathogenic and corrosive materials. As a result, it has been necessary in the past to place a protective sheet over the mattress to prevent or inhibit the passage of undesirable liquids or materials into such mattress. However, occasionally the protective sheet is either improperly applied or moved or shifted by the infant so as to expose the mattress which as a consequence is wetted. The mattress so wetted is unhealthy and unsanitary and rapidly deteriorates thus requiring its early replacement.

It is thus a principal object of the present invention to provide an improved mattress cover.

Another object of the present invention is to provide an improved mattress having a removable cover.

Still another object of the present invention is to provide an improved, launderable, removable cover for crib size mattresses.

Still another object of the present invention is to provide an improved cover for crib size mattresses which covers are characterized by their ease of application and removal.

A further object of the present invention is to provide a crib type mattress cover characterized by its strength and snugfitting properties.

The above and other objects of the present invention will become apparent from a reading of the following description, taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is an isometric view, partially broken away of theimproved mattress cover as applied to a mattress;

Figure 2 is an exploded perspective view, partially broken away for convenience of illustration of the elements forming the improved mattress cover;

Figure 3 is a sectional view taken along line 33 in Figure 2;

Figure 4 is a sectional view taken along the line 4-4 in Figure 2;

Figure 5 is a sectional view taken along the line 5-5 in Figure 3;

Figure 6 is a sectional view taken along the line 66 in Figure 4; and

Figure 7 is a plan view of a panel forming the end cap of the improved mattress cover.

In a sense, the present invention contemplates the provision of a combination comprising a mattress having a first cover and a second removable mattress cover including vertically spaced upper and lower parallel rectangular panels, a first longitudinally extending strip having upper and lower parallel edges and vertical end edges, said strip extending along the sides and one of the ends spring structure 14- which is sandwiched between a p" of said panels-and being sewn to the corresponding edges of said upper and lower-panels, said strip terminating at a point rearwardly of the forward end of said upper and lower panels, and a second elongated strip having upper and lower edges sewn to the corresponding edges of said upper and lower panels and having alongitudin'al slit formed therein, said second strip extending to the ends of said first strip, and a slide type separable fastener secured to said second strip along the edges of said slit formed thereiin p Referring now to the drawings which illustrate a referred embodiment of the present invention, the improved mattress cover is generally designated by *the ntiin'eral 10 and is illustrated in Figure'l as applied to'ar'nat'tre'ss 12. The mattress 12 is provided with a'c'onvent'ional an of rectangular panels 16 preferably formed of a -car ru'gated cardboard. The panels 16 are covered with a padded material as are the sides of the structure and the entire assembly is contained within an envelope 18 preferably formed of muslin or the like.

The improved mattress cover 10 may be formed of oil cloth, plastic impregnated cloth, or any other suitable launderable material, and includes parallel upper and

lower panels

20 and 22 respectively having rounded corners, the numeral 24 designating the forward edges of the panels and the numeral 26 the side edges thereof.

A second elongated strip of material 29 has a longitudinally extending slit 30 formed therein extending from a point short of an end edge 32 to the opposite end edge 31 of the strip 29 to form a pair of tongue members 33. The upper and lower edges of the second strip 29 are secured, as will be hereinafter set forth, to the forward edges 24 of the

panels

20 and 22 and to the side edges 26 to a point at or beyond the end edges of the first strip 27. Lines of stitches 34 pass through the hems 28 and the ends of the second strip 29. Binding tapes 36 extend along the upper and lower edges of the

panels

20 and 22 and sandwich and engage between their legs the borders of the

panels

20 and 22 and the borders of the first and

second strips

27 and 29 and stitching 37 passes through the binding strips and the engaged edges to effect the securing of the various members to form a completed envelope.

The confronting edges of the tongues 33 are folded inwardly as at 38 and the tape supports 39 of conventional slide fasteners 41 are secured to the finished edges 38 by suitable lines of stitching 45. There is also provided a conventional slidable closure member 40 which engages the opposing fasteners 41 to efifect the selective opening and closing of the slit 30 which defines the entrance into the mattress cover 10.

In use, the closure member 40 is slid to an end position to separate the slide fasteners 41 and effect an opening into the mattress cover 10. The free end of the mattress cover is then spread to fully open position and the mattress slid into the cover. Thereafter, the closure member 40 is slid to the closed position to eifect the sealing of the opening 30 and complete the assembly of the mattress and mattress cover. In order to remove the mattress cover 10 the above procedure is merely reversed.

It is apparent from the above that there has been provided a mattress having a removable launderable cover of long wear and resist roughhandling.

While there has been described and illustrated A pre- I ferred embodiment of the =present invention, it is apparent that numerous alterationsv a'nd omissions-may be made without departing fromthespiritthereof.

1. An improvedmattress cover comprising vertically spaced upper and lowerparallel rectangular panels, a first longitudinally extending strip having upper and low-' er parallel edges and vertical end edges, said strip extending along the sides and one of the ends of said panels and being sewn to the corresponding edges of said upper and lower panels, said strip having inwardly folded end edges and terminating at a pointzrearwardly of the forward-end of said upper and lower panels, and a second elongatedqstrip having upper and lower edges sewn to the correspondingedges of said upper. and lower panels and having a longitudinalv slit formed therein the opposing edges of which are inwardly folded, said second strip extending to the ends of said first strip, a pair of upper and lower-binding strips each having a pair of parallel Tags and xiendiiii 310155 the joined eagesef'said ii'piser and lowerpanels and said longitudinally extendingstrips and sandwi'ching said edges between said legs, said binding strips extending completely about the peripheries of said upper and lower panels and being secured to said edges by lines of stitching, and a slide type separable fastener secured to said second strip along the edges of said slit formed therein.

2. An improved mattress cover in accordance with claim 1, wherein said panels and 'strips are formed of a launderable waterproof'material.
