One of the primary objects of our invention to provide a-shield which will protect'the'forehead from the discomfort and marks just mentioned, and which will provide complete comfort in the wearing of hair-nets and similar articles.

Another object of our invention is to generally improve articles of the above mentioned character, so as to render them more practical, reliable, and efiicient in operation.

Another object of our invention is to provide an article of the above mentioned character which is inexpensive to manufacture and in a form and at a cost at which the device may be discarded after a single use, thereby eliminating the problem of sanitation.

The practice among users of hair nets and similar articles is to wear the nets either with the knots in the front and rear of the head respectively, or on the right and left sides of the head respectively according to the type of coiffure involved, the net having less lateral stretch in the line of the knots than in the opposite direction, which fact is taken advantage of by wearers of the nets. Thus the net may be worn in either of two positions.

Another object of our invention is to provide an article which will accommodate the band of the hair net in either position, it being obvious that a fixed groove is unsatisfactory in this respect. Y

Another object of our invention is to provide an article which may be satisfactorily used in connection with all types of foreheads.

Our invention has many other advantageous features, some of which, with the foregoing, will be set forth at length in the following description where we shall outline the forms of the invention, which we have selected for illustration in the drawing accompanying and forming a part of the present specification. In the said drawing, we have shown three forms of our invention, but it is to be understood that we do not limit ourselves to such forms, since the invention, as expressed'in the claims may be embodied in a plu-' rality of forms:

The shield Ill illustrated in Figures 1 and 2 of the drawing is the preferred form of our invention. It may be constructed of cardboard, fibreboard, rubber, thin sheet aluminum or other suitable material. The shield is preferably narrower at the ends than at the center, although this is 25 not essential, in that it may be of the same width throughout.

The ends of the shield ID are slit to form three divisions thereof. The upper and lower divisions are bent outward to form guides H and I2 respectively, and a center portion l3.

The upper center portion of the shield I0 is also slit, and another slit I4 is provided at sub stantially right angles to the aforesaid slit. The top center portions of the shield are then bent outward to form top center guides l5.

When it is desired to use a hair net I6 or other similar article provided with an elastic band ll, the shield I0 is placed on the forehead and the elastic band ll of the hair net 16 is placed on the shield 10 below the center guides I5 and over the portion I3 of the shield between the upper guides H and the lower guides l2.

The guides merely limit the motion of the elastic band I! at the ends and the upper portion of the shield l0 and therefore allow complete movement of the elastic band at all other parts. The shield can therefore be used on all types of foreheads with complete stisfaction, which would not be the case if the shield was provided with a fixed groove. When the ends of the net are on the sides of the head as shown in Figure 1, the elastic band I! forms a wide curve on a wide forehead, and a comparatively sharp curve on a narrow forehead.

When the hair net is placed on the head with the knots in the front and back of the head as shown in Figure 5, the top center guides [5 are adapted to hold the knot of the hair net in position. With the ends of the net in this posi- In the modification of our shield shown in Figure 4 of the drawing, the outer guides are positioned approximately half way between the center and outer edges of the shield. Two or more guide posts may be punched out of the shield, and the elastic band disposed between the guide posts that best suit the needs of the individual. Lower center guide posts, similar to the upper center guide posts may be punched out to limit the movement of the elastic band on the lower part of the shield, but we have found that these lower guide posts are not necessary. V

' The application of the aforesaid modified forms of our shield is believedto be apparent from the foregoing description and will therefore not be repeated herein.

From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing,. advantages of the construction and method of operation will be readily understood by those skilled in the art to which the invention appertains, and While we have. described the principle of operation, together with the forms which we now consider to be thebest embodiment thereof, we

desire to have it understood that the articles shown are merely illustrative and that such changes may be made, when desired, as fall within the scope of the appended claims.

We claim as our invention:

1. A device for protecting the forehead when used in connection with a hair net provided with an elastic band comprising a strip of flexible material on which the elastic band of the hair net is adapted to be placed when the device is in use and means on said strip for limiting the movementof the elastic band.

2. A device for protecting the forehead when used in connection with a hair net provided with an elastic band comprising a strip of flexible material on which the elastic band of the hair net is adapted to be placed when the device is in use, a center portion of which strip is turned outward to provide means to limit the movement of the elastic band of the hair net.

3. A device for protecting the forehead when used'in connection with a hair net provided with an elastic band comprising a strip of flexible material on which the elastic band of the hair net is adapted to be placed when the device is in use, a portion of the ends of which strip are turned outward to provide means to limit the movement of the elastic band of the hair net.

4. A device for protecting the forehead when used in connection with a hair net provided with an elastic band comprising a strip of flexible material on which the elastic band of the hair net is adapted to be placed when the device is in use, the center portion and a portion of the ends of which strip are turned outward to provide means to limit the movement of the elastic band of 'the hair net.
