Description

ZAEZEM A. cAsTANxEN COMMODE Filed July l, 1955 Eig . 3nventor ALFRED BASTAN IEN M Cttorneg S.
Patented Dec. 10, 1935 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 2 Claims.
This invention relates to commodes and has for its object to provide a structure having a perforated seat and a cover therefor so united that the cover, when it alone is raised, serves as a back rest; and further so that the cover can be manipulated to lower or raise the seat without handling the latter to permit the insertion or removal of the pot. Other objects may appear from the description.
'Ihe invention is embodied in the example herein shown and described, the features of novelty being nally claimed.
In the accompanying drawing- Figure 1 is a top plan view of the device according to the invention with the cover raised.
Fig. 2 is a view partially in section on the line II-II Fig. l.
Fig. 3 is a view in section similar to Fig. 2 with the seat down and the cover also down in closing position.
Fig. 4 is a similar view in section, the seat and cover both in raised position.
Fig. 5 is a detail view in section on a larger scale illustrating an intermediate position of the seat and cover in the operation of raising the seat by manipulating the cover.
In the views 6 designates a rectangular boxlike body or pot container supported by legs 1, if necessary or desired, to locate the seat at the proper height above the floor.
8 designates the seat, it having an ordinary oriiice 9, said seat being hinged by a pair of hinges, like that at IIJ, secured to the lower side of the seat and the rear face of the container as 35 shown.
II designates the cover, it being hinged by a pair of hinges I2 secured to the lower face of the cover and the upper face of the seat. The hinges I2 are secured to the cover at points there- 40 on to leave a margin IIa projecting beyond the rear edge of the seat sufficient, when the cover is raised as shownl in Fig. 2, or when both the cover and seat are raised as shown in Fig. 4, to
irnpinge upon the rear Wall of the container and sustain that or those members, as the case may be, in raised position. In order to permit a slight slant rearwardly of the cover when it alone is raised, asl shown in Fig. 2, the leaf of the hinge 5 I2 applied to the seat is so located as to cause the pintle I2 to be in horizontally oiset position as regards the pintle of the hinge I0 and in a plane in rear of the plane cf the rear edge of the seat. The osetting of the pintle I2a facili- 10 tates the operation of the seat by the cover.
It will be observed from the construction shown and described that in effect the seat constitutes a link between the cover and container so that when the cover alone is somewhat raised or l5 swung upwardlyV and pressed rearwardly and downwardly the seat is carried upward and over with it as depicted in Figs. 5 and 4. By omitting the described rearward pressure the cover alone can be swung upward to the position shown in 20 Fig. 2 to form a back rest for the person occupying the seat.
The seat can be let down from its raised position by reversing the described operation of the cover.
The character I3 designates the pot which can be easily placed in 4or removed from the cornmode when the seat and cover are raised as shown in Fig. 4.
The parts can be changed without departing from the gist of the invention as claimed.
What I claim is:
1. A commode including a container land a cover, and a seat linking the cover to the container whereby the seat can be raised by manipulation of the cover alone.
2. A commode including a container and a cover and a seat linking the cover to the container whereby the seat can be raised by manipulation of the cover alone, said cover having a projection to impinge on the container to support the cover in raised position.
ALFRED CASTANIEN.
