UNITED STATEs PATENT OEEIoE.
HENRY S. HALE, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT lN WASH-STANDS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 202,257, dated April 9, 1878; application filed January 12, 1878.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, HENRY S. HALE, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Portable Wash-Stands", of which the following is a specification:
My invention relates to an improvement in combined wash-stands and desks; and the object of my improvement is to so construct the lid of the stand that when it is depressed it will serve as a desk, and when elevated will expose the entire surface of the top of the stand in such a manner that the said top can be easily cleaned.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is avertical section of my improved washstand, and Fig. 2, a perspective view, drawn to a reduced scale.
The body A of the stand consists of the usual box-like structure, with doors a in front, the top B being, by preference, of marble, and having the usual circular opening above the basin D, the flanges of which rest on the wooden support d of the marble top; or the basin may be secured in any other appropriate manner.
At the rear of the stand is the usual elevated portion H, to which is hinged the lid G, the latter, when depressed, serving to cover the marble top, and being inclined like the top of a desk, which the structure is intended to represent when not in use as a washstand.
In combined wash-stands and desks as heretofore constructed, it has been usual to secure tapering strips to the top of the stand, one at,
each end of the same, for supporting the inclined lid; but the strips so secured, as well as any projections above the surface of the marble top, are objectionable, because they interfere with the washing and cleansing of the marble top; hence I secure the tapering strips e e to the under side of the lid, one at each end of the same, as best observed in Fig. 2, the lower edges of these strips, when the lid is depressed, resting on the top of the body, so as to overlap and conceal the ends of the marble top and form an appropriate finish to the body.
The water-reservoir I is contained in a chamber formed at the back of the stand, partly within the elevated portion H of the same, and extending downward to a point between the upper edge and bottom of the basin, so that there may be the largest possible supply of water without disfiguring the structure, for the upper portion of the reservoir is confined laterally and longitudinally to the elevated rear, H, common to ordinary wash-stands as well as to desks.
The top K of the elevated portion H of the stand consists of two parts-the cover m of the reservoir and the back a, secured to the cover at right angles to the same, this back being formed to make a suitable ornamental finish for the stand. The top K is hinged to the front of the elevated portion H of the stand at 00, so that it can be turned over to the position shown by dotted lines when the reservoir has to be replenished or cleansed.
A tube, 10, extends from the reservoir, near the bottom of the same, to the basin D, and this tube is furnished with a suitable valve, the handle of which projects above the marble top of the stand. There is the usual opening, fitted with a detachable plug, at the bottom of the basin, and within the stand should be placed a bucket or other suitable vessel, for receiving the waste-water as it is discharged from the basin.
It will be seen that when the lid Gris raised the entire surface of the marble top is exposed, so that it can be readily cleansed, there being no cells in which foul water, not easily removed, can be lodged.
If desired, the ribs 6 0 may be straight, and these ribs may be arranged to rest on inclined strips on the outside of the body below the marble top.
I claim as my invention, and as animprovement in combined wash-stands and desks- The combination of the body A of the stand, and the top B of the same, with the lid G and the strips 6 e, secured to the said lid, and constituting, when the latter is depressed, part of the desk, allsubstantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence oftwo subscribing witnesses.
HENRY S. HALE.
