ification forming part of Letters Patent No.
tom it may concern:
nown that I, THOS. F. ADAMS, of hia, in the county of Philadelphia, he State of Pennsylvania, have inertain new and useful Improvements -Kilns; and do hereby declare that ing is a full, clear, and exact descripeof, reference being had to the ac- At the top, in the roof thus formed, are
' great saving of labor, in taking off and puting drawings, and to the letters of marked thereon, making a part of ture of my invention relates to brickd it consists in the construction of a I t iron roof for the same, as will be or more fully set forth.
r to enable others skilled in the art my invention appertains to make he same, I will now proceed to des construction and operation, refere annexed drawings, in which 1 is an end elevation of a brick-kiln n my invention. Fig. 2 is a transtical section of the same. W of a part thereof.
esents the ordinary frame-work of a which is boarded up to a certain At each end I then apply sheets, B B, 0 complete the gable, and in the same door, 0, which is hinged at its upnd provided with a cord or chain, a, over a pulley, b, at the top of the cm the ground, as may be desired. frame-workA are connected suitable russ-frames E E, standing above the ach side, and to these are secured D on each side, said rafters meeting n in the center, and sloping downward ide below the truss-frames.
of of the kiln is composed of iron F, which are suspended from the y hooks or stirrups d d, passing the sheets and fastening in rods i, runnir from the top to the lower edge of the ting on an ordinary Wooden roof, is thus effected, and the waste incident to the repeated handling of the boards is done away with. It renders the brick-maker independent of the weather, as his kiln is covered at all times, and the doors can be shut down more or less during a storm. It saves fuel, as the heat cannot escape so rapidly. The proportion of hardburned brick is largely increased, and a much greater uniformity of color throughout is secured.
The iron roof F is suspended about an inch below the rafters, so as to prevent any liability of the wood catching fire.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A brick-kiln provided with a permanentiron roof and iron gable ends, provided with doors both in the roof and gables, for the pur poses herein set forth.
2. In combination with the ordinary framework of a brick-kiln, truss-frames connected thereto above the kiln, rafters secured under said truss-frames, and an iron roof suspended below the rafters, leaving an air-space between the roof and rafters, substantially as herein set forth.
' In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 28th day of February, 1878.
THOS. F. ADAMS.
