Description
S. HILL. Pencil Holder.
No. 201,672. Patented March 26,1878
N.PETERS, PHOTUTHOGRAPHF;R. WASHINGTON D C UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIoE.
SAMUEL HILL, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN PENCIL-HOLDERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 201,672, dated March 26, 1878 application filed February 26, 1878.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, SAMUEL HILL, of the city and county of San Francisco, and State of California, have invented aPencil-Pocket; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawlng.
My invention relates to an improved device for holding a pencil when it is out of use, and in a convenient position for use at any time; and this I call a pencil-pocket]? It consists in the construction of a metallic tube having a pin attached, for the purpose of fastening the device to a coat orany other convenient place about the person; and this tube has openings made in the sides, through which the pencil may be grasped by the thumb and finger to remove it. The elastic ity of the case is such as to retain it in place when not wanted.
The figure is a view of my device.
A is a tube, of any suitable metal, which can be silver-plated to give it a handsome appearance. At the upper end of this tube the mouth B is made bell-shaped, so that it will readily admit the pencil when thrust into the tube.
The metal of the tube is cut away on two sides, forming slots or open sides, as at E,that
permit a short pencil to be easily Withdrawn. The tube is bent slightly at C, making it a sprin g-cat-ch at the center, thus holdin g and preventing the pencil from slipping out too easily. In some cases the tube might be made with a slit oropen sides, when its elasticity would be sufficient to retain the pencil.
The lower end of the tube A is closed, in order to preventthepencilfrom fallingthrough it, if it should become loose.
On one side of the tube A a spring or safety pin, D, is placed, which is of the usual construction, and is for the purpose of fastening the device to the clothing wherever it may be most convenient.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A pencil-pocket consisting of the tube A, having the sides slotted or formed with openings at E, said sides being also elastic, so as to retain the pencil, substantially as herein described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal.
