Description
Sept17,1935. WEBE Y zmmym STOPPER OPENER Filed Sept 18, 1954 Ju 1. ab-g. 2.,
Patented Sept. 17, 1935 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 1 Claim.
This invention relates to stopper openers.
The main object of the invention is to provide a stopper opener for beer bottles or the like which is permanently attached to the bottle and is always ready for use.
A further object of the invention is to provide an opening device which is a permanent part of the bottle and. which will steady and prevent the bottle from shaking in the box and thus avoid breakage.
Another object of the invention is to provide an opener which is a permanent fixture of the bottle and with which the stopper can easily and quickly be pried open.
A further object of the invention is to provide an opener having its outer edge on line with the body of the bottle when positioned in its operating position and its inner edge following the contour of the neck of the bottle.
Other objects of the invention will appear as the disclosure progresses. The drawing is intended to merely indicate a possible embodiment of the invention. It is obvious that the actual needs of manufacture may necessitate certain mechanical changes. It is therefore not intended to limit the invention to the embodiment illustrated but rather to define such limits in the appended claim.
For a more general understanding of the invention attention is called to the drawing. In the drawing like reference characters denote like parts throughout the specification.
In the drawing Figure 1 is a view of the upper portion of a bottle showing the stopper opener in its inoperative position.
Figure 2 is a similar view of Figure 1 but showing the stopper opener in its operative position.
Figure 3 is a similar view as Figure 1 but showing the bottle lying down.
Figure 4 is a view of the stopper opener detached from the bottle and looking in the direction of arrow A of Figure 3.
Figure 5 is a section on line 5-5 of Figure 4.
Referring now to the drawing in detail, numeral l designates the body of the bottle, 2 the neck, 3 the stopper and 4 the opener which is the subject of this invention. The opener comprises a ring 5 having inwardly bent ends 6 which fit in shallow holes 1 formed in the neck of the bottle and an opening hook 8 saddled on said ring.
The opening hook consists of a widened portion 9 provided with an elongated slot l in which fits the flat portion l l of the ring, a protruding nose member I 2 adapted to engage the top of the stopper as shown in Figure 2 and a widened tail member l3 at the end of the opening hook. Numeral I4 designates the inturned hook for engaging the skirt of the stopper.
The inner edge l5 of the opening hook follows the exact contour of the neck of the bottle and the extreme outer edge It is on line with the body 10 of the bottle as indicated by the dot and dash line ll of Figures 1 and 3. The purpose of this construction is to steady the bottle and prevent shaking in the box when in an upright position or when lying down and thus avoid breakage. The dot and dash line can be likened to the wall of the box. It will thus be seen that with this type bottle opener permanently attached to the bottle, the bottle will be steadied in its position in the box, the stopper device acting as a buffer and the breakage due to the movement of the bottle reduced to a minimum.
To open the stopper the opening hook is lifted so that the inturned hook M will engage with the skirt of the stopper and the nose l2 with the top of the stopper as shown in Figure 2 and the stopper pried open by merely lifting the end I3.
It will thus be seen that I have provided an efiicient and simple means to open a bottle stopper. The opening means are made a part of the bottle and will always be handy when needed. When not in use the opening device is out of the way and does not add to the bulk of the bottle.
Having described my invention I claim:
In a device of the class described, the combination with a bottle provided with a thickened portion at the extreme upper end of the neck, said upper end provided with a pair of shallow holes diametrically arranged opposite each other, a ring having inwardly bent ends, said ends pivotted in said holes, an opening element saddled on said ring, said opening element having an inturned hook to engage the skirt portion of a bottle stopper, and a protruding nose member for engaging the top face of the stopper, the engaging edge of said nose member curving outwardly to provide a rounded surface for the said top face of said stopper, the contour of the inner edge of the opening element matching the longitudinal contour of the bottle neck.
HARRY WEBER.
