Description
April 15, 1930. c. E. TAPP 1,755,086
COMBINATION TUMBLER AND BOTTLE OPENER Filed Dec. 6, 1928 Inventor Patented Apr. 15, 1930 PATENT orrlcr.
UNITED STATES GHARLESERNEST TAPZP, OF BARAGHOIS, QUEBEC, CANADA, ASSIGNOR OF TWO-THIBDS '.['0 PAUL GUERTIN & CIE, OF QUEBEC, CANADA 3 COMBINATION TUMBLER AND BOTTLE OPENER i f Application filed December 6, 1928, Serial No. 324,269, and in Canada October 22, 1928.
designed particularly for use in hotels, cafes and the like, in order that the customer or waiter will not be required to search for a bottle opener when a capped bottle is served.
The device comprises a drinking glass or tumbler having substantially the usual shape and formed with a recess in its outer wall near the lower end thereof. A gripping claw projects into the top of the recess and is preferably constructed as an integral part of a ring firmly secured to the outer wall of the tumbler. Also, a special construction is provided in the wall of the glass just above the recess in order to provide added strength where the strain of the gripping member ocours.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following description and in the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is an elevation of the device;
Figure 2 is a longitudinal section on the line 22 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a longitudinal section of the device applied to the cap of a bottle;
Figure 4 is a section on the line 4-4 of Figure 2; and
Figure 5'is a perspective view of the claw rmg.
Reference to these views will now be made by use of like characters which are employed to designate corresponding parts throughout.
The device comprises a drinking glass or tumbler 1 which tapers slightly from top to bottom in the usual manner. In the outer wall of the glass and at the lower end thereof is formed an arch shaped recess or depression 2.- At the crown of the arch, the wall of the glass is thickened as indicated by the numeral 3 for reinforcement purposes described more specifically below.
A metallic ring or band 4 is firmly secured around the tumbler in a plane slightly above the crown of the recess 2. This member is secured in position preferably by being shrunk into a groove 5 cut in the outer wall of the glass. The band is provided on its' inner surface with a pin 6 which enters the thickened portion 3,,thereby further aiding in retaining the ring.
The band 4 is further formed with a claw 7 also disposed at the crown of the arch and slightly curved inwardly to enter the arch as clearly illustrated in Figures 2, 3 and 5. The end of the claw is toothed as shown by the numeral 8 to increase its gripping properties. I
In the use of the invention, the glass is tilted with one hand while the bottle 9 to be opened is-held in the other hand. In this manner the cap 10 may be slipped into the recess 2 to bear against the wall 2' thereof,
whereby the toothed end 8 of the claw passes beneath the edge of the cap. A slight upward movement of the tumbler obviously lifts the cap-from the neck of the bottle. Since the'glass is held in one hand and the bottle in the other, as already stated, these parts are in convenient position for emptying the contents of the bottle into the glass. It will be noted, particularly that the reinforced part 3 of the glass walland the pin 6 entering this reinforcement serve to rovide increased strength where the stram is greatest.
While a specific embodiment of the invention has been illustrated and described, it is to be understood that various alterations in the details of construction may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention as indicated by the appended claim.
Having thus fully described the invention, what I claim as new and desire, to'protect by Letters Patent is:
A combination tumbler and bottle cap remover comprising a tumbler having a recess in its outer wall and a channel extending eripherically above said recess said wall being thickened at the top of said recess. a ban 5 disposed in the channel, means extended from the band and into a portion of the tumbler wall for preventing displacement of the band, and a cap engaging claw projecting from 10 said band and into the recess.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
1 S ERNEST TAPP.
