ARCHIBALJD W. PAULL AND JOHN A. MGGINNIS, OF WHEELING, WEST VIRGINIA, ASSIGNORS T WHEELING STAMPING COMPANY, OF WHEELING, WEST VIR- GINIA, A CORPORATION OF WEST VIRGINIA.
CAP RETAINER.
Application filed March 18, 1921. Serial No. 453,467.
To all whom it may 00mm.-
Be it known that we, ARCHIBALD W. PAULL and JOHN A. MoGINNIs, both citizens of the United States, residing at Wheeling, in the county of Ohio and State of West Virginia,
have invented a new and useful Improvement in Cap Retainers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a collapsible tube having our invention applied thereto;
Figure 2 is a similar view showing the cap removed; and
Figure 3 is a plan view with the cap removed.
The invention relates to containers having removable caps, and more particularly to collapsible tubes and the like having screw caps which are removed to permit of the discharge of the contents of the tube.
The object of our invention is to provide simple, convenient and inexpensive means .25 whereby the cap when removed remains attached to the tube, so that it cannot become lost, the retaining device acting also to hold the cap sufliciently away from the discharge orifice of the tube to prevent coming in contact with the material being discharged.
In the accompanying drawing, in which We have shown a preferred embodiment of our invention, the numeral 2 designates a portion of a collapsible tube of well known character, having the usual threaded neck portion 3 to receive the cap 4.
5 designates the retaining device and consists of a piece of flexible wire having inherent elasticity. This wire is formed with a loop or eye 6 at one end which is rotatably engaged with the cap below the shoulder 7 thereof, and with a similar loop 8 at the other end which is rotatably engaged with the neck portion 3 at the base of the screw the two eyes or loops as to increase its elasrial being discharged from the tube.
By the rotative engagement with both the cap and the tube, the cap may be freely screwed on and unscrewed. It is, however, not necessary that both ends of the retainer shall be rotatively engaged and one end thereof may be made fast either to the cap or to the tube.
Our invention provides an extremely simple retaining device Which can be applied to collapsible tubes and the like at comparati vely small expense and which has a sulficlent spring action to hold the cap away from the mouth of the tube without the necessity of providing spring coils for this purpose.
We claim:
The combination with a container having a neck portion and a cap adapted for detachable engagement with said neck portion, of a retaining device comprising a single piece of resilient metal engaged at one end portion with the cap and at the other end portion with said neck and adapted to automatically lift said cap away from said neck upon disconnection of the detachable connection between said parts, said retaining device having its intermediate portion flat, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof, we have hereunto set our hands.
