- lift chair products There are several lift chair products that are currently in use in the marketplace. Typically, these lift chairs have a single flat seat which is lifted and rotated for the purpose of allowing the user to exit the chair with minimal effort. While the seat angle of current designs allows the occupant's back to be tilted forward, the configuration of the seat used to transfer a person from a seated position to a standing position does not allow for the proper transfer of the user's center of gravity between a seated position and a standing position. More specifically, the hips remain significantly behind the lower leg, which limits the person's ability to safely exit from the chair. Additionally, the tilting forward of the single flat seat often gives the user the feeling of falling forward as the chair is moved toward a raised position, which is considered undesirable. This can present an even greater problem particularly with the elderly whose muscles and coordination have diminished with age.

- the seat portions 12 , 14 are approximately six-teen inches off of the floor/ground, which facilitates use of the chair 10 by an occupant who is shorter in height, while still providing suitable lift for a taller occupant. It is also within the scope of the invention that the chair 10 may be manufactured such that the seat portions 12 , 14 may be of a greater or lower height, if desired. Additionally, the width of the seat portions 12 , 14 may be varied as well. For some uses, a width of twenty inches is sufficient. However, for bariatric purposes, the width of the seat portions 12 , 14 can be manufactured to be twenty-four inches or more, if desired.

Abstract
The present invention is a chair having a first seat portion operably associated with a second seat portion, with the first seat portion disposed in the same plane as the second seat portion when the chair is in a lowered position, and an actuator for moving the first seat portion relative to the second seat portion. When the actuator is actuated, the first seat portion pivots relative to the second seat portion such that the first seat portion is located in a different plane compared to the second seat portion. When in the raised position, the first seat portion is substantially parallel to the ground, which allows the occupant of the chair to easily transfer the occupant's center of gravity to being supported by the occupant's feet and knees.

- This application claims the benefit of U.S. application Ser. No. ______, which claims the benefit of U.S. Provisional Application No. 61/281,831, filed Nov. 23, 2009, and U.S. Provisional Application No. 61/399,745, filed Jul. 16, 2010.
- The present invention relates to lift chairs which are used to aid in going from a seated position to a standing position.
- There are several lift chair products that are currently in use in the marketplace. Typically, these lift chairs have a single flat seat which is lifted and rotated for the purpose of allowing the user to exit the chair with minimal effort. While the seat angle of current designs allows the occupant's back to be tilted forward, the configuration of the seat used to transfer a person from a seated position to a standing position does not allow for the proper transfer of the user's center of gravity between a seated position and a standing position. More specifically, the hips remain significantly behind the lower leg, which limits the person's ability to safely exit from the chair. Additionally, the tilting forward of the single flat seat often gives the user the feeling of falling forward as the chair is moved toward a raised position, which is considered undesirable. This can present an even greater problem particularly with the elderly whose muscles and coordination have diminished with age.
- Accordingly there exists a need for an improved lift chair which allows the user to safely enter and exit the chair, and go from a seated position to a standing position, or vice versa.
- The present invention is a lift chair which allows the seated occupant to be positioned at a significantly more accommodating angle when transferring between a seated position and a standing position, thereby reducing the possibility of accidentally falling forward or ineffectively managing the weight transfer to a metal walker. Among other needs, the present invention specifically addresses the areas of hip or knee related mobility problems, especially among the elderly, who may be living alone or want a degree of independence that does not require assistance from other individuals. Additionally, the present invention also includes an optional leg rest assembly incorporated within the chair. The leg rest assembly is operated by a separate switch, and provides for leg rest capability as well as leg or foot circulatory relief, if desired.
- The present invention is a chair having a first seat portion operably associated with a second seat portion, with the first seat portion disposed in the same plane as the second seat portion when the chair is in a lowered position, and an actuator for moving the first seat portion relative to the second seat portion. When the actuator is actuated, the first seat portion pivots relative to the second seat portion such that the first seat portion is located in a different plane compared to the second seat portion. When in the raised position, the first seat portion is substantially parallel to the ground, which allows the occupant of the chair to easily transfer the occupant's center of gravity from being supported by the chair to being supported by the occupant's feet and knees.
- Further areas of applicability of the present invention will become apparent from the detailed description provided hereinafter. It should be understood that the detailed description and specific examples, while indicating the preferred embodiment of the invention, are intended for purposes of illustration only and are not intended to limit the scope of the invention.

- Referring to the Figures generally, a stand-up chair according to the present invention is shown generally at 10. In
FIGS. 1-11 , the cushions and covering has been removed so the frame of thechair 10 is exposed. Thechair 10 includes afirst seat portion 12 and asecond seat portion 14, and each of theseat portions first seat portion 12 is connected to thesecond seat portion 14 with afirst hinge 16, and in this embodiment thefirst hinge 16 is a piano hinge. Also connected to thefirst seat portion 12 is abackrest 18; thebackrest 18 is selectively connected to thefirst seat portion 12, and does not move relative to thefirst seat portion 12. Thechair 10 is movable between a first, or lowered position, and a second, or raised position. - Connected to the
first seat portion 12 is at least onearmrest 20 for supporting the arm of a user when sitting in thechair 10. Thearmrest 20 is also used for support when getting out of thechair 10 to stand up. - Connected to the
second seat portion 14 is afront support beam 22; thesecond seat portion 14 is connected to thefront support beam 22 through the use of asecond hinge 24, which in this embodiment is also a piano hinge. Thefront support beam 22 is connected to a firstfront support member 26 and a secondfront support member 28, both of which are curved in shape. The firstfront support member 26 is connected to a firstupper side beam 30, and the secondfront support member 28 is connected to a secondupper side beam 32. The firstupper side beam 30 is connected to a firstrear support member 34, and the secondupper side beam 32 is connected to a secondrear support member 36. Both of therear support members front support member 26 and firstrear support member 34 are both connected to a firstlower support beam 38. Similarly, the secondfront support member 28 and the secondrear support member 36 are connected to a secondlower side beam 40. The firstupper side beam 30 is substantially parallel to the firstlower side beam 38, and the secondupper side beam 32 is substantially parallel to the secondlower side beam 40. When in the lowered position, theseat portions - Connected to
side beams inner support member 42, and connected to the other side beams 32,40 is a secondinner support member 44. Pivotally connected to the firstinner support member 42 is a first pivot support member, which in this embodiment is a firstpivot support bracket 46. The firstpivot support bracket 46 is connected to the firstinner support member 42 through a nut and bolt connection, shown generally at 88, having abolt 90 extending through an aperture formed as part of the firstpivot support bracket 46, a washer (not shown), an aperture formed as part of afirst flange 94, and a nut (not shown). - Pivotally connected to the second
inner support member 44 is a second pivot support member, or secondpivot support bracket 48. The secondpivot support bracket 48 is connected to the secondinner support member 44 through the use of a nut and bolt connection, shown generally at 98, having abolt 100 extending through an aperture formed as part of the secondpivot support bracket 48, a washer, and an aperture formed as part of asecond flange 104, and anut 106. - Each of the
pivot support brackets first cross member 50. Thefirst cross member 50 is part of thefirst seat portion 12, and connects to a firstseat support beam 142 and a secondseat support beam 144. More specifically, there is a nut and bolt connection, shown generally at 108, having abolt 110 extending through an aperture formed as part of the firstpivot support bracket 46, awasher 112, an aperture formed as part of athird flange 114, and anut 116; thethird flange 114 is connected to thefirst cross member 50. There is another nut and bolt connection, generally shown at 118, having abolt 120 extending through an aperture formed as part of the secondpivot support bracket 48, awasher 122, and an aperture formed as part of afourth flange 124, and anut 126; thefourth flange 124 is connected to thefirst cross member 50. - There is also a
second cross member 52 which is part of thefirst seat portion 12, and is connected to the seat support beams 142,144. However, thesecond cross member 52 is curved such that thecenter 54 of thesecond cross member 52 is closer to the ground/floor in relation to the rest offirst seat portion 12. Pivotally connected to thecenter 54 of thesecond cross member 52 is an actuator in the form of a lift motor mechanism, shown generally at 56, which is operable for changing thechair 10 between the lowered and raised positions. Thelift motor mechanism 56 includes anelectric motor 58, afirst telescoping member 60, and asecond telescoping member 62 concentrically disposed within thefirst telescoping member 60 and mechanically connected to theelectric motor 58. Theelectric motor 58 has abracket 128, and thebracket 128 is positioned between twoupper flanges 130 connected to thecenter 54 of thesecond cross member 52. Abolt 132 extends through theupper flanges 130 and thebracket 128 as shown inFIGS. 1-4 and 6-9, and has a threaded connection with anut 134. - The
second telescoping member 62 is also pivotally connected to a frontlower cross member 64, and the frontlower cross member 64 is connected to each of the lower side beams 38,40. The frontlower cross member 64 has twolower flanges 136, and the end of thesecond telescoping member 62 is located between thelower flanges 136. Abolt 138 extends through thelower flanges 136 and thesecond telescoping member 62 into anut 140, and connects thesecond telescoping member 62 to theflanges 136. - There are also two other lower cross members, a middle
lower cross member 66, and a rearlower cross member 68. Thecross members lower cross member 64; the middlelower cross member 66 is connected to the lower side beams 38,40, and the rearlower cross member 68 is connected to therear support members - As mentioned above, the
armrest 20 is connected to thefirst seat portion 12. In this embodiment, there are two armrests, afirst armrest 20, and asecond armrest 70. Eacharmrest vertical beams 72, and each of thevertical beams 72 is connected to thefirst seat portion 12 through anextension 74. More specifically, there is a rear transverseseat support beam 146 and a front transverseseat support beam 148, and theextensions 74 are formed as part of therespective beams seat support beam 148 is pivotally connected to a transverseseat support beam 150 through the use of thefirst hinge 16. The transverseseat support beam 150 is formed as part of thesecond seat portion 14; thesecond seat portion 14 also includes a thirdseat support beam 152 and a fourthseat support beam 154, both of which are connected to the transverseseat support beam 150, and another transverseseat support beam 156 connected to thefront support beam 22 by thesecond hinge 24. - Connected to each of the
armrests switch 76 connected to thefirst armrest 20, and asecond switch 78 connected to thesecond armrest 70. Theswitch 78 connected to thesecond armrest 70 is used for controlling thelift motor mechanism 56. Theswitch 76 connected to thefirst armrest 20 is used for controlling a second lift motor mechanism 166 (best seen inFIG. 12 ) which is similar to the otherlift motor mechanism 56 shown in the Figures. The secondlift motor mechanism 166 is pivotally connected to the middlelower cross member 66, and across beam 80 of a leg rest assembly, generally shown at 82, and is operable for moving theleg rest assembly 82 between an extended and a retracted position, or any position therebetween. - Referring to
FIG. 1A , thebackrest 18 is detachable from thefirst seat portion 12, which allows for other types of backrests to be used with thefirst seat portion 12, depending upon the desire of the occupant of thechair 10. Also, thebackrest 18 includes several ribbedportions 84, which are curved to accommodate the occupant of thechair 10. Thebackrest 18 also includes twopost portions 160, each of which includes a reducedportion 162 operable for being received intocorresponding post portions 164 extending upwardly from thefirst seat portion 12. Various types of backrests having different shapes may have post portions similar to thepost portions 160 operable for connection with thepost portions 164 of thefirst seat portion 12. - While the frame of the
chair 10 is shown in several of the Figures for demonstrating the movement of the various components, thechair 10 may also have various types of cushioning attached to thebackrest 18,seat portions armrests leg rest assembly 82 for providing comfort. An example of thelift chair 10 of the present invention having cushioning is shown inFIGS. 13-20 . Various coverings may be used to cover the cushioning, such as upholstery, leather, or the like. Covering may also be applied to thevertical beams 72 of thearmrests chair 10, substantially reducing or eliminating the chance of injury from a limb being caught in between the components of thechair 10. - In operation, when the
chair 10 is in the lowered position, as shown inFIGS. 1-3 , 13, 15, 17, and 19, and it is desired to move thechair 10 to the raised position, as shown inFIGS. 8-12 , 14, 18, and 20, the user of thechair 10 simply operates theswitch 78 connected to thesecond armrest 70 to activate thelift motor mechanism 56. When thelift motor mechanism 56 is activated, theelectric motor 58 applies a force to thesecond telescoping member 62, which in turn applies a force to the frontlower cross member 64. This force generated by theelectric motor 58 is also applied to thesecond cross member 52, which in turn causes theseat portions first telescoping member 60 is connected to thefirst seat portion 12 near thesecond cross member 52. Thepivot support brackets chair 10 orinner support members first seat portion 12. As pressure is put on thesecond cross member 52, which is also near the center of theseat portion 12, thepivot brackets inner support members seat portion 12 to lift off of the side beams 30,32 initially at a rearward angle of about ten degrees. Thepivot support brackets inner support members first seat portion 12. - The initial movement of the
seat portions FIG. 4 , and provides an angle positioning feature of thefirst seat portion 12. As theseat portions first seat portion 12 is angled rearwardly such that a person sitting in thechair 10 is moved toward an angled position. Essentially, the front transverseseat support beam 148 of thefirst seat portion 12 is higher compared to the rear transverseseat support beam 146 of thefirst seat portion 12, thisangle 157 is best shown inFIGS. 5-7 . The connection between thefirst seat portion 12, thesecond seat portion 14, thefront support beam 22, and thepivot support brackets first seat portion 12 is operable to be positioned at anangle 157 greater than zero, is also operable to be positioned generally between zero and fifteen degrees, and is positioned preferably at an angle of about ten degrees from horizontal when theswitch 78 used to operate thelift motor mechanism 56. An example of thechair 10 in an angled position is shown inFIG. 4 , and thechair 10 is shown in other angled positions inFIGS. 5-7 as thechair 10 is changed to the raised position. The ability to angle thefirst seat portion 12 not only provides thechair 10 with the angle positioning feature, but also more securely positions an occupant of thechair 10 as thechair 10 is transitioning between the lowered and raised positions. This angle positioning feature also removes some of the load from the occupant's spine, this improves the comfort of thechair 10 when theoccupant 10 is sitting in thechair 10 for extended periods of time. The occupant's stability is improved when moving towards the second position and mobility is improved at the end of actuation when entering and exiting thechair 10. Thefirst seat portion 12 is angled until thechair 10 has moved to the fully raised position, as shown inFIGS. 8-12 , 14, 18, and 20. - As force is continually applied to the
lower cross beam 64 and thesecond cross member 52 by thelift motor mechanism 56, which drives thesecond telescoping member 62 out of thefirst telescoping member 60, theseat portions second seat portion 14 pivots relative to thefront support beam 22, and thepivot support brackets first cross member 50 and theinner support members FIGS. 4-7 , until thechair 10 is in the fully raised position, as shown inFIGS. 8-12 , 14, 18, and 20. - When in the raised position, the
telescoping members lift motor mechanism 56 are substantially vertical. This helps to ensure that the stress applied to thetelescoping members telescoping members chair 10 is in the fully raised position. - The
first seat portion 12 and thearmrests chair 10 is in the raised position. The purpose of thefirst seat portion 12 moving to a position parallel to the ground when thechair 10 is in the fully raised position is to prevent shift the occupant's center of gravity forward prematurely (i.e., essentially, preventing the shifting of the occupant's center of gravity forward until the occupant is ready to leave the chair). Thefirst seat portion 12 is able to be parallel to the ground in both the first position and the second position by defining the combined length of thetelescoping members 60,62 (in the second position) being equal to the combined height of one of the upper side beams 30,32 from the ground and the depth of the second seat portion 14 (i.e. one of the seat support beams 152,154). In this embodiment, thelift motor mechanism 56 has a retracted length of about 15.25 inches, and a length of about 23.25 inches when thechair 10 is in the raised position. The length is defined as the distance between the portion of thebracket 130 of theelectric motor 58 that connects to theupper flanges 130 and the portion of the telescopingmember 62 that connects to thelower flanges 136. However, it is with the scope of the invention that the lift motor mechanism,pivot brackets seat portions first seat portion 12 is parallel to the ground in both the lowered position and the raised position. - When the
chair 10 is in the raised position, and a user simply sits on thefirst seat portion 12, essentially shifting the center of gravity from the user's feet and knees to thefirst seat portion 12, the user then actuates theswitch 78 to operate thelift motor mechanism 56 to transition thechair 10 back to the lowered position. - As mentioned above, there is a
leg rest assembly 82 connected to theinner support members switch 76 connected to thefirst armrest 20 is used to operate thelift motor mechanism 166 connected to thecross beam 80 and the middlelower cross member 66. When thechair 10 is in the lowered position or at an angled position, the user may operate theswitch 76 to move theleg rest assembly 82 toward the extended position (shown inFIGS. 12 and 16 ), allowing the occupant of thechair 10 to use theleg rest assembly 82. If desired, thechair 10 may be changed to the angled position (shown inFIGS. 5-7 ) as described above while using theleg rest assembly 82 as well. The occupant may position theleg rest assembly 82 any position in between the extended and retracted positions. As shown inFIGS. 1-3 , 13, and 15, theleg rest assembly 82 is disposed substantially underneath thesecond seat portion 14 when theleg rest assembly 82 is in the retracted position. This prevents interference from theleg rest assembly 82 when thechair 10 is changing between the raised and lowered positions. This also allows for thicker cushioning to be used for theleg rest assembly 82 for providing additional comfort to the lower legs, or for purposes of improving the circulation of blood flow through the legs. - The
lift chair 10 as described presents several advantages over other lift chairs. The ability for thefirst seat portion 12 to be angled up to ten degrees as described above improves the comfort of the occupant, and prevents the feeling of falling forward as theseat portions seat portions 12,14 (when thechair 10 is in the lowered position) to being supported by the first seat portion 12 (when thechair 10 is in the raised position), allowing the occupant to comfortably shift the occupant's center of gravity to a position above the occupant's knees and feet. Also, when in the lowered position, theseat portions chair 10 by an occupant who is shorter in height, while still providing suitable lift for a taller occupant. It is also within the scope of the invention that thechair 10 may be manufactured such that theseat portions seat portions seat portions - Additionally, the
front support members chair 10 when thechair 10 is in the raised position, allowing the occupant to lean on thechair 10 as desired to facilitate the shift of the occupant's center of gravity to the occupant's feet and knees when the occupant is exiting thechair 10. The occupant's feet remain in proximity to thesupport members chair 10. The occupant's torso is also more stabilized by thechair 10, and is limited from shifting awkwardly when exiting thechair 10. - Another feature of the present invention is that the
rear support members front support members 26,28). This better facilitates the use of an optional shroud 158 (shown inFIGS. 14 , 18, and 19-20) for covering the area surrounded by therear support members backrest 18, and the ground when thechair 10 is in either the raised or lowered positions. Theshroud 158 may be connected to the back of thefirst seat portion 12, or thebackrest 18. - To further provide for increased stability of the occupant, the
first seat portion 12 is larger when compared to thesecond seat portion 14. More specifically, the firstseat support beam 142 and secondseat support beam 144 are longer than the thirdseat support beam 152 and fourthseat support beam 154. The largerfirst seat portion 12 allows many different occupants of different heights and weights to use thechair 10 effectively. Thearmrests first seat portion 14 by thevertical beams 72 and theextensions 74, which causes thearmrests first seat portion 14. Thearmrests seat support beam 142 and secondseat support beam 144 of thefirst seat portion 12 to provide greater control when exiting thechair 10. Furthermore, thearmrests chair 10. However, it is within the scope of the invention that thearmrests chair 10 changes between the raised and lowered positions. - While it has been shown that the
switch 78 connected to thesecond armrest 70 is used for operating thelift motor mechanism 56, and theswitch 76 connected to thefirst armrest 20 is used for operating the secondlift motor mechanism 166 connected to thecross member 66 andcross beam 80, it is within the scope of the invention that either of theswitches switches respective armrests chair 10, as opposed to having a separate controller, such as a wand. There are also killswitches 86 used for disconnecting theswitches switches 76,78 (i.e., preventing children from operating the chair 10). - In this embodiment, the
seat portions rest 18,armrests front support beam 22,front support members rear support members inner support members cross members lower cross members vertical beams 72,extensions 74,ribbed portions 84, are all made of steel, and have a hollow, square-shaped cross-section. However, it is within the scope of the invention that other types of cross-sections may be used, if desired. Also, other types of materials, such as aluminum, may be used instead of steel to build thechair 10. - It should be noted that the invention described above is similar in operation to the invention described in co-pending U.S. application Ser. No. ______, titled “Lift Chair,” to William Lipford, filed contemporaneously herewith on Nov. 23, 2010, the entire specification of which is incorporated herein by reference.
- The description of the invention is merely exemplary in nature and, thus, variations that do not depart from the gist of the invention are intended to be within the scope of the invention. Such variations are not to be regarded as a departure from the spirit and scope of the invention.
Claims (24)
1. A chair comprising:
a first seat portion pivotally connected to a second seat portion, said first seat portion disposed in the same plane as said second seat portion when said first seat portion and said second seat portion are in a first position; and
an actuator for moving said first seat portion relative to said second seat portion between said first position and a second position;
wherein said first seat portion pivots relative to said second seat portion when said actuator is actuated, causing said first seat portion to be in a different plane relative to said second seat portion, and said first seat portion is substantially parallel to a ground surface when said first seat portion and said second seat portion are in said second position.
2. The chair of claim 1 , further comprising:
a first hinge for pivotally connecting said first seat portion to said second seat portion;
a front support beam; and
a second hinge for pivotally connecting said second seat portion to said front support beam;
wherein said first seat portion pivots relative to said second seat portion, and said second seat portion pivots relative to said front support beam as said actuator applies a force to said first seat portion.
3. The chair of claim 3 , further comprising:
a first front support member connected to said front support beam;
a second front support member connected to said front support beam;
a first upper side beam connected to said first front support member;
a second upper side beam connected to said second front support member, said first upper side beam and said second upper side beam support said first seat portion and said second seat portion when said lift chair is in said first position.
4. The chair of claim 1 , wherein said actuator is a lift motor mechanism comprising:
an electric motor pivotally connected to said first seat portion;
a first telescoping member connected to said electric motor; and
a second telescoping member connected to said electric motor, said second telescoping member concentrically disposed within said first telescoping member, such that when said electric motor is activated, said second telescoping member moves within said first telescoping member, and said first telescoping member moves said first seat portion;
wherein said first telescoping member and said second telescoping member are substantially vertical when said first seat portion and said second seat portion are in said second position.
5. The chair of claim 1 , further comprising a backrest selectively connected to said first seat portion.
6. The chair of claim 1 , further comprising a switch for activating said actuator, said switch being mounted on an armrest, said armrest connected to said first seat portion.
7. The chair of claim 1 , further comprising a leg rest assembly operable for movement between a retracted position and a deployed position, wherein said leg rest assembly is substantially disposed underneath said second seat portion when said leg rest assembly is in said retracted position.
8. The chair of claim 7 , wherein said lift motor mechanism is operable to position said first seat portion in an angled position.
9. The chair of claim 1 , wherein said first seat portion is larger in relation to said second seat portion.
10. A lift chair operable for movement between a raised position and a lowered position, comprising:
a first seat portion;
a second seat portion pivotally connected to said first seat portion with a first hinge; and
a lift motor mechanism pivotally connected to said first seat portion, said lift motor mechanism operable for moving said first seat portion said second seat portion between said raised position and said lowered position;
wherein said first seat portion and said second seat portion are in the same plane when said lift chair is in said lowered position, said first seat portion and said second seat portion are in a different plane relative to one another when said lift chair is moved out of said lowered position, and said first seat portion is substantially parallel to the ground when said lift chair is in said raised position.
11. The lift chair operable for movement between a raised position and a lowered position of claim 10 , further comprising:
a front support beam operable for supporting said second seat portion when said lift chair is in said lowered position;
a second hinge, said second seat portion pivotally connected to said front support beam by said second hinge;
a first front support member connected to said front support beam;
a second front support member connected to said front support beam;
a first upper side beam connected to said first front support member; and
a second upper side beam connected to said second front support member, wherein said first upper side beam and said second upper side beam support said first seat portion and said second seat portion when said lift chair is in said lowered position.
12. The lift chair operable for movement between a raised position and a lowered position of claim 10 , wherein said lift motor mechanism is in a substantially vertical position when said first seat portion and said second seat portion are in said raised position.
13. The lift chair operable for movement between a raised position and a lowered position of claim 12 , said lift motor mechanism further comprising:
an electric motor pivotally connected to said first seat portion;
a first telescoping member extending away from said electric motor; and
a second telescoping member connected to said electric motor such that said second telescoping member is slidably disposed within said first telescoping member, and said electric motor moves said second telescoping member within said first telescoping member and changes said first seat portion and said second seat portion between said raised position and said lowered position;
wherein said first telescoping member and said second telescoping member are substantially vertical when said lift chair is in said raised position;
14. The standup chair operable for moving between a raised position and a lowered position of claim 10 , further comprising a leg rest assembly operable for movement between a retracted position and a deployed position, wherein said leg rest assembly is substantially disposed underneath said second seat portion when said leg rest assembly is in said retracted position.
15. The standup chair operable for moving between a raised position and a lowered position of claim 10 , wherein said first seat portion is larger in relation to said second seat portion.
16. The standup chair operable for moving between a raised position and a lowered position of claim 10 , further comprising a backrest selectively connected to said first seat portion, said backrest operable for being detached from said first seat portion.
17. The standup chair operable for moving between a raised position and a lowered position of claim 10 , wherein said lift motor mechanism is operable to position said first seat portion in an angled position.
18. A standup chair operable for moving between a raised position and a lowered position, comprising:
a first seat portion;
a second seat portion pivotally connected to said first seat portion by a first hinge such that said first seat portion and said second seat portion are in the same plane when said first seat portion and said second seat portion are in said lowered position;
a front support beam operable for supporting said second seat portion when said lift chair is in said lowered position;
a second hinge, said second seat portion pivotally connected to said front support beam by said second hinge; and
a lift motor mechanism having at least one telescoping member, said lift motor mechanism pivotally connected to said first seat portion such that said first seat portion is positioned at an angle when said lift motor mechanism moves said first seat portion from said lowered position to said raised position, and first seat portion is angled until said first seat portion is in said raised position;
wherein said first seat portion is substantially parallel to the ground when said first seat portion and said second seat portion are in said raised position;
19. The standup chair operable for moving between a raised position and a lowered position of claim 18 , wherein said first seat portion is in a different plane relative to said second seat portion when said first seat portion and said second seat portion are moved out of said lowered position.
20. The standup chair operable for moving between a raised position and a lowered position of claim 18 , further comprising:
a first front support member connected to said front support beam;
a second front support member connected to said front support beam;
a first upper side beam connected to said second front support member; and
a second upper side beam connected to said second front support member, wherein said first upper side beam and said second upper side beam support said first seat portion and said second seat portion when said lift chair is in said lowered position.
21. The standup chair operable for moving between a raised position and a lowered position of claim 18 , said lift motor mechanism further comprising:
an electric motor pivotally connected to said first seat portion;
a first telescoping member connected to said electric motor; and
a second telescoping member connected to said electric motor, said second telescoping member slidably and concentrically disposed within said first telescoping member such that said electric motor is activated to move said second telescoping member into and out of said first telescoping member, causing said first seat portion and said second seat portion to move between said raised position and said lowered position;
wherein said first telescoping member and said second telescoping member are substantially vertical when said lift chair is in said raised position.

The standup chair operable for moving between a raised position and a lowered position of claim 18 , further comprising a leg rest assembly operable for movement between a retracted position and a deployed position, wherein said leg rest assembly is substantially disposed underneath said second seat portion when said leg rest assembly is in said retracted position.
23. The standup chair operable for moving between a raised position and a lowered position of claim 18 , wherein said first seat portion is larger in relation to said second seat portion.
24. The standup chair operable for moving between a raised position and a lowered position of claim 18 , further comprising a backrest selectively connected to said first seat portion, said backrest operable for being detached from said first seat portion.
