Description

F. E. BEST Jun 1E6, 1935 LOCK Filed Feb. 11,1929
INVENTOR Patented July 16, 1935 PATENT OFFICE LOCK Frank Ellison Best, Seattle Wash, assignor to Frank .E. Best, Inc., Seattle, Wash., a corporation of Washington Application February 11, 1929, Serial Naesam,
' '1 Claims. (01. iii-47) i My invention relates to improvements in looks of the lock controlled assembly type in which a lock core is secured within a receptacle by key controlled means and an object of my invention is to provide a lock of this nature having snap latch means for looking a lock core into the receptacle, said lock core being releasableby use of a key. In my prior Patent Number 1,384,022 issued July 5, 1921, I have disclosed a lock in which a core is arranged to be both locked into and released from a core case by the operation of a key.
' In this application, Idisclose a lock in which a lock core is arranged to be locked into a receptacle 15 or core case by snap latch means and can only be released therefrom by the use of a key. Another object of the invention is to provide a pin tumbler lock of this nature which may be made in a very small size thus making it especially desirable for use on motor vehicles and for other uses where a lock of small size is required. l V i A further object is to provide a lock of this nature in which the usual integral head of the key plug is formed on the rear end and the head portions at the front of the key plug are secured to the key plug in the process of assembly of'the lock and may be of different materials which may nature which is strong and substantial in construction, durable and efiicient in operation, cheap to manufacture, easy to install within the be changed.
Other and more specific objects will be apparent from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing. I
In the drawing Figure 1 is a view in end elevation of a lock constructed in accordance with my invention. I l
Figure 2 is a view of the same partly in side elevation, and partly in section on broken line 2-2 of Figure 1. i f
Figure: 3 is a cross section through the core substantially on broken line 33 of Figure 4, the tumbler pins being omitted. i: a Figure 4 is a cross section of the core substantiallyon broken line 4-4 of Figure 3..
Figure 5 is a detached view in longitudinalseo tion of the key plug and face plate for the same,
showing the face plate as it may appear before 551' it has been applied tothe key plug.
be finished differently for ornamental purposes; Further objects are to provide alock of this lock receptable and readily removable by the use, of the proper key, to permit the combinationto Figure 6 is a cross section substantially broken line 66 of Fig. 3.
Like reference numerals designate like parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the drawing, I have shown a lock 5 core, including a body portion of figure 8 shape in cross section, having one tubular part 6 for the reception of a oylindricalkey plug 1 and sleeve 8 and having a non-tubular portion 9 which is provided with transverse holes ill for the reception of the usual tumbler pins l l, springs l2 and caps l3. p
The key plug 1 is surrounded by the sleeve 8 which fits snugly within the bore of the tubular body portionli and is rotatable relative to both the plug] and body portion 6 and said sleeve and key plug are both provided with bores I I for reception of the tumbler pins ll, thus forming a double shear line lock in which the key plug may be turned within the sleeve when the breaks in the tumbler pins register with 'the shear line formed at the periphery of the key plug or in which the key plug and sleeve may be turned as a unit within the body portion 6 when breaks in the tumbler pins register with the shear line formed at the periphery of the sleeve 8.
The key plug 1 has an integral head [5 on its inner end, which may be provided with any suitable means, as a throw pin NS, for engaging with any'suitable bolt or secondary lock mechanism. Said key plug is provided at its outer end with a face plate I! which may be recessed as atl8 for the reception of a bell shaped end I9 of the key plug 1 whereby the key plug 1 and face plate l'l may be secured together by a swaging process when the lock is assembled. A face 20 is also swaged or riveted onto the end of the solid portion -9 of the core body by stud means 2 l.
For the purpose of locking this lock core within a'suitable receptacle or housing 40 I provide a locking lug 22 which is swingingly mounted within a recess 23 in the core body 9 and is urged outwardly by a spring 24. The rear end of the locking lug 22 is provided with a tongue 25 which fits into, a slot 26 and supports said locking lug for swinging movement. The rear end of the locking lug'adjacent thetongue 25 abuts solidly against the wall of the core body 9. The rear end of the locking lug is cut away on the inner side to afford room for an enlargement 21.0n the rear end of the spring 24, whereby the spring 24 is held in the correct position. The enlargement 21 also makes it possible to construct a spring which will withstand bending repeatedly without breaking.
For the purpose of limiting the outward swinging movement of the locking lug 22 and providing a means by which said locking lug may be retracted, I provide a stop member 28 which is slidable crosswise of the locking lug by dove tail means 29 and is located on the inner side and to-- ward the forward end of said locking lug. An offset extension 30 on one end of the stop member 28 extends downwardly into a recess 3| in the thickened upper portion 32 of the sleeve 8 andv is arranged to be engaged by a portion 33 of said sleeve so that the locking lug may be retracted by' the position shown in Figure 4. The recess 3| in:
the sleeve is large enough to permit the stop member 28 to be pressed into a fullyretracted position by applying a pressure against the outside of the locking lug 22 when the tumbler pins are aligned. The length of the stop member 2,8 is not greater than the width of the locking lug 22 so that in assembling the device the spring 24 may first be placed in the recess23, the locking lug 22 with the stop member telescopically en gaged therewith and flush atboth top and bottom may then be inserted and the stopmember may be allowed to drop down into the recess 3| in the sleeve thus completing the assembly and making it impossible to remove the locking lug. The dropping down of the stop member 28 is aidedby the spring 24 which exerts a pressure againstan inclined surface 35 on said stop lug, and said spring further serves to lock the stop lug down. s
The operation of this lock is similar to tl'lat of the usual pintumbler lock in so far as its bolt op-' erating function is concerned, the usual operating key aligning the cuts oi the tumbler pins M on the shear line at the periphery of the key plug and permitting rotation of the key plug within the sleeve 8 while said sleeve 8 is locked against rotation, The lockcore may be quickly and easilyslipped into a receptacle, the locking lug being pressed back by contact with the receptacle until the core isfully inserted and in its proper position, whereupon the locking lug'22 may snap out and lock behind a suitable shoulder 34 of the receptacle into which the core is inserted. The receptacle and the shoulder 34 are shown in Figures 3 and 6, it being understood that the form of this receptacle may be varied to suit different requirements. To retract the locking lug 22 from engagement with the shoulder 34 and thus permit the core to be withdrawn from its receptacle itis necessary to use a control key which willalign thecuts in the tumbler pins IE on the shear line formed at the outer periphery of the thickened portion 32 of the sleeve 8 thus allowing the sleeve 7 8 to be turned to the right within the portion 6 far enough to draw in the locking lug 22, clear of the shoulder 3d; q r s The lock core can thus be quickly andeasily inserted into its receptacle without the use of a key, the lug 22 snapping into locking engagement with the shoulder, but to remove said core a suitable key must be used. V
The foregoingv description and accompanying drawingclearly disclose what I now regard as a preferred embodiment of my invention but it will be understood that this disclosure is merely illustrative and that changes in the invention may be made withinthe: scope and spirit of'the following claims;v I
I claim: I
1.
