9 Claims.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in looks and refers more particularly to that type of lock especially adapted for use with automotive vehicle door handles. In
locks of this character, it is very often necessary that the cylinder be removed, and it is therefore, one of the objects of this invention to provide a lock of the character described in which the lock cylinder may be conveniently removed without door.
Another object of this invention resides in the provision of a lock of the character described having means for releasing the lock cylinder for withdrawal and so constructed as to necessitate the turning of the cylinder to a predetermined position to become effective, thus requiring the use of a proper key.
And a more specific object of this invention resides in the provision of a lock of the character described having means for releasably securing the lock cylinder in the handle and which may be moved to inactive position by a tool inserted through the key opening when the cylinder is turned to a predetermined position.
With the above and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, my invention resides in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts substantially as hereinafter described and more particularly defined by the appended claims, it being understood that such changes in the precise embodiment of the hereindisclosed invention may be made as come Within the scope of the claims.
In the accompanying drawing, I have illustrated one complete example of the physical embodiment of my invention constructed according to the best mode I have so far devised for the practical application of the principles thereof, and in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view with parts broken away and in section of a vehicle door handle illustrating a lock constructed in accordance with my invention applied thereto, said view showing the mechanism in locked position;
Figure 2 is a cross sectional view taken through Figure l on the plane of the line 2-2;
Figure 3 is front view with parts broken away and in section and illustrating the cylinder turned to permit the locking member to be moved to inactive position to release the cylinder for withdrawal; and
Figure 4 illustrates a tool provided to effect release of the cylinder for withdrawal.
Referring now more particularly to the accomnecessitating the removal of the handle from the panying drawing in which like numerals designate like parts throughout the several views, the numeral 5 represents a vehicle door handle having a shank E; into which a stem 1 is cast to impart the action of the handle to the door latching 5 mechanism, not shown. A bore 8 extends from the front of the handle, axially into the shank 8 to receive a lining member 9 preferably formed of pressed steel or the like to provide the desired hard wearing surface and in which a lock 10 cylinder [It is rotatably mounted. The lining or sleeve ii is non-rctatably secured in the handle member and is provided with diametrically opposed longitudinal slots ll into which tumblers 12 carried by the lock cylinder extend to restrain 15 rotation of the cylinder in the sleeve, the tumblers i2 being retractible out of the slots l 5 upon the insertion of the proper key it to free the cylinder for rotation.
As illustrated in Figure l, the cylinder is in its locked position and the tumblers are engaged in the upper longitudinal slot l i, and when turned to their fully unlocked position the lower slot ll receives the tumblers, as is customary. Rotation of the cylinder id is imparted to suitable latching means carried by the handle, but not shown as it forms no part of this invention, to release the handle for turning when the cylinder is in unlocked position and to secure the same against actuation when the parts are in their position illustrated in Figure 1.
As best illustrated in Figure l, the outer end of the sleeve ll terminates inwardly of the front face of the handle member and has a lug l projected thereform to provide a stop with which cylinder carried stops cooperate to limit the rotation of the cylinder to 180 degrees. The cylinder carried stops are the ends it of a stepped or cut away portion formed in the back face of an annular flange it which forms the front of the cylinder and is disposed within the handle bore 8 outwardly of the sleeve 9.
Longitudinal movement of the cylinder is restrained by a segmental locking member ll carried by the forward portion of the lock cylinder and operable in an annular channel l8 extended from the bore 8 in the handle member. The locking member ll is received in an annular groove E9 in the lock cylinder at a point spaced from the outer end of the cylinder and in line with the annular channel it and the lug M, as best illustrated in Figure l, the annular groove l9 being increased in depth adjacent the upper portion of the cylinder to communicate with the key receiving recess 21!, as shown in Figure 3.
The member I? is pivotally mounted in the enlarged portion of the annular groove 19 by a pin 2| extended into the flange l5 from its rear, to pass through one end of the member H, and to terminate short of the outer front face of the cylinder.
The free end of the locking member ll is normally yieldably urged outwardly of its groove l9 and into the annular channel l8 by an expansive spring 22 received in a recess 23 formed in the locking member in communication with the groove [9 and having its outer end coiled about a tit or projection 24 extended from the inner edge of the member ll. The free end of the member I! is also cut away, as at 25, to lie over the outer face of the lug M formed on the sleeve 9 when the cylinder is in its locked position illustrated in Figure 1 to prevent its movement to inactive position, as will be now described.
As stated, a portion of the groove I9 is enlarged, and communicates with the key receiving recess 20. Disposed within this enlarged portion and projected into the key receiving recess is a toe 26 extended from the inner end of the looking member I! and when the locking member is in its position engaging the annular channel I8, one edge of the toe 26 is substantially parallel with the adjacent side of the key !3 and spaced slightly therefrom.
When it is desired to move the locking member I! to inactive position, the key is inserted and the lock turned out of locking position, as illustrated in Figure 3, so that the free end of the locking member clears the lug l4, and a tool 2! having a curved end 28 is inserted in the space between the toe 26 and the adjacent side of the key I3 and fulcrumed toward the key to move the locking member against the action of its spring 22 entirely within the groove I9 and out of the annular channel l8. It will thus be readily apparent that with the locking member I! disposed entirely within the periphery of the lock cylinder flange 15, withdrawal of the cylinder will be permitted.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, it will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art to which an invention of the character described appertains, that I provide a novel manner of releasably securing a lock cylinder in its mounting member which permits detachment of the cylinder after the proper key has been inserted and the cylinder turned to a predetermined position, with the aid of a tool or piece of bent wire inserted into the key receiving aperture.
What I claim as my invention is:
l. A look device comprising a mounting member, a lock cylinder having a key receiving opening and being movable in the mounting member in the performance of its normal locking functions upon the insertion of a proper key in the key receiving opening, and locking means for securing the lock cylinder against removal from the mounting member and operable to inactive position by an element inserted into the lock cylinder key receiving opening with the key in place to release the lock cylinder for removal outwardly of the locking member.
2. A lock comprising a mounting member, a lock cylinder having a key receiving aperture and movable in the mounting member in the performance of its normal locking functions upon the insertion of a proper key, locking means for releasably securing the lock cylinder against removal from the mounting member and operable to inactive position to release the lock cylinder for removal from the mounting member by means inserted into the lock cylinder key receiving aperture with the key in place, and means preventing the movement of the locking means to inactive position while the lock cylinder is in locked position.
3. A look device, comprising a mounting member, a lock cylinder movable therein between predetermined limits in the performance of its normal locking functions, stop means carried by the mounting member to define said limits of movement of the lock cylinder, locking means for releasably securing the lock cylinder against removal from the mounting member, and means including the stop means for preventing release of the locking means while the lock cylinder is at one of its limits of movement.
4. A look device, comprising a mounting memher, a key controlled lock cylinder movable in the mounting member in the performance of its normal locking functions upon the insertion of a proper key, locking means carried by the lock cylinder and engageable in an annular channel in the mounting member to releasably secure the lock cylinder against removal from the mounting member, and means whereby the looking means may be moved to inactive position to release the lock cylinder for removal from the mounting member by a tool insertable into the lock cylinder key receiving aperture with the key in position.
5. A lock device comprising a mounting member, an abutment carried by the mounting member, a lock cylinder having a key receiving aperture and being movable in the aperture in the performance of its normal locking functions upon the insertion of a proper key, a member carried by the lock cylinder and engageable with the mounting member abutment tosecure the lock cylinder against removal from the mounting member, and means whereby said member may be moved out of engagement with the mounting member abutment to release the lock cylinder for removal by an element insertable into the key receiving aperture with the key in position.
6. A look device, comprising a mounting member, an abutment carried by the mounting member, a lock cylinder movable in the mounting member in the performance of its normal looking functions, and having a key receiving aperture, a locking member carried by the lock cylinder, means yieldably urging the locking member to engagement with the mounting member abutment to secure the lock cylinder against removal from the mounting member, and means carried by the locking member and projected into the key receiving aperture to be engageable by means inserted into the key receiving aperture whereby actuation of said last mentioned means moves the locking member out of engagement with the mounting member abutment to release the lock cylinder for removal.
'7. A lock device comprising a mounting member having a bore and an annular channel communicating with the bore, a lock cylinder rotatable in the bore and having a key receiving aperture, a locking member carried by the lock cylinder and normally engaged in the mounting member annular channel to secure the lock cylinder against longitudinal movement, means whereby the locking member may be moved out of the mounting member annular channel to removably release the lock cylinder by a tool inserted into the lock cylinder key receiving aperture, and means preventing the disengagement of the locking member from the annular channel while the lock cylinder is in locked position.
8. In a lock device, a mounting member having a bore, a key controlled lock cylinder mounted in said bore for movement between predetermined limits in the performance of its locking functions and having a key receiving opening, means securing the lock cylinder in the mounting member bore against removal without interfering with the normal key controlled movements of the cylinder in the performance of its locking functions, and an abutment carried by the mounting member and cooperating with said means to retain the cylinder in the mounting member bore, said locking means being movable free of the abutment when the cylinder has been moved a predetermined distance from one of its limits by a member insertable into the key opening of the cylinder into engagement with said locking means and said member utilizing the key as a fulcrum rest in freeing the locking means from said abutment.
9. A lock device comprising a mounting member, a lock cylinder movable therein between locked and unlocked positions and having a key receiving aperture, retaining means for releasably securing the lock cylinder against removal from the mounting member and operable to inactive position to release the lock cylinder for removal from the mounting member by means insertable through th key receiving aperture, and means preventing the removal of the lock cylinder while in locked position.
