This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in locks and refers morev particulady. to the type adapted for use with automotive vehicle door handles.
It is an object of this invention to provide a lock of the character described which is so; constructedxthat personsiamiliar' with its. construction mayremove the cylinder.
' Another object of this invention is to simplify the construction of locks of this character and to reduce the manufacturing costs thereof.
' Another object of this invention resides in the: provision of a. lock. of the character described in which cooperating stop means are carried by the: mounting member and the: lock cylinder, one of which is yieldable to permit withdrawal of the lock cylinder when in a. predetermined relative position with respect to the mounting member.
Another object of this invention resides in the provision of a lock of the character described in which cooperating means carried by the mounting member and the lock cylinder normally secure the lock cylinder in the mounting member, said means being disengageable when the lock cylinder in a predetermined position relativeto the mounting member, and the provision of means for preventing accidental disengagement ofv the cooperating means when the cylinder is in said predetermined position.
And a more specific object of this invention re sides in the provision of an abutment carried by the mounting member and an annular groove formed in a lock cylinder carried part normally in engagement with the abutment and having a portion, which when aligned with the mounting member carried abutment, permits withdrawal of the lock cylinder upon the application of outward stress thereto.
With the above and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, my invention resides in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts substantially as hereinafter described and more particularly defined by the appended claims, it being understood l thatsuch changes in the precise embodiment of the hereindisclosed invention may be made as come within the scope of the claims.
In the accompanying drawing, I have illustrated one complete example of the physical embodiment of my invention constructed according to the best mode I have so far devised for the practical application of the principles thereof,

The casing! is substantially closed at its in nor end, from which a pair of tongues. The cylinder 18, being of conventional construction, is provided with a plurality of locking tumblers, not shown, normally projected into one of a pair of longitudinal slots [5 in the easing 9 to secure the cylinder and the pin H. against rotation, the tumblers being. retractable within the periphery of the cylinder upon the insertion of a proper key l6 to free the cylinder for rotation as is customary. Rotation of; the cylinder is limited, in the present instance, to:
approximately 180 degrees by the engagement of a stop, comprising a lug H extended from the outer end of .the casing 8, with either of a pair of abutments 18 formed in the outer enlarged end is of the cylinder.
The rotary movement of the cylinder and the pin M is translated into a reciprocating movement ofa locking pin 20 slidably mounted in a transverse recess 2'! formed in the Y outermost end of the shank extension I, by the engagement of an eccentric pin '22, extended from the adjacent end of the pin I4, with a transverse'slot 23 formed in the locking pin. When the cylinder is in its locked position the locking pin 20 has one end projected beyond the periphery of the shank extension I and into a recess formed in a door carried stationary element, not shown. to prevent rotation of the handle assembly, and when the cylinder is turned to its unlocked position the pin 28 is withdrawn from the recess to permit unrestricted turning of the handle. To releasably secure the cylinder in the handle, a fixed stop comprising a transverse pin 25 is fixed in the shank extension so that its inner medial portion forms a cord to the inner periphery of the extension, to be engageable in an annular groove 26 formed in the cylinder exten sion or pin 14. One side 21 of the groove 26 is preferably straight and ina plane at substantial right angles to the axis of the pin to provide a sharp abutment engageable with the cross pin 25 to normally prevent outward movement of the pin and cylinder.
However, to permit the cylinder to be inserted and removed when necessary, the outermost portion of the pin [4, or that portion extending between the groove 26 and its outermost end, has a portion thereof cut away to form a flat surface 28, which when aligned with the cross pin 25, clears the same and permits insertion and withdrawal of the cylinder. The groove and the flatted surface thus forms substantially a bayonet slot, in which the flatted surface provides The position of the flatted side 28 with respect to the cross pin 25 is such as to align with the cross pin when the cylinder is turned to an approximately medial position, thus necessitating the use of a key in withdrawing the cylinder and thereby preventing its unauthorized removal.
To preclude the possibility of the cylinder being accidentally withdrawn, and to necessitate a proper knowledge of the construction of the lock before the cylinder can be withdrawn, means are provided which normally prevent withdrawal of the cylinder, even though the flatted side 28 of the pin 4 is aligned with the cross pin 25. This means consists of a ball or the like 29 mounted in a recess 30 formed in the flatted portion of the'pin I4 adjacent the groove 26 and normally yieldably urged to project beyond the flatted surface 28 by an expansive spring 3|, disengagement of the ball from the recess being I prevented by the inwardly swedged peripheral edge 32 of the recess. The projecting portion of the ball 29 thus substantially forms a continuation of the side 21 of the annular groove 26 and prevents accidental disengagement of the groove and the cross pin 25. The application of sufiicient outward stress, however, readily disengages the groove and the cross pin by forcing the ball into its recess.
From the foregoing descriptiontaken in connection withthe accompanying drawing it will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art to which an invention of the character described appertains that I'have provided a novel means for retaining a lock cylinder assembled with its mounting member which is extremely simple in design, inexpensive to manufacture, and requires only the turning of the cylinder to a medial position and the application of outward stress on the key to effect withdrawal.
What I claim as my invention is:
1. In a lock deviceof the character described, a mounting member having a bore opening to its front end, a lock cylinder inserted into the mounting member bore from its front end and movable therein in the performance of its locking functions, and cooperating means carried by the mounting member and the lock cylinder for normally retaining the lock cylinder assembled with the mounting member, one of said means being yieldably maintained in operative position and being. movable to inactive position to enable withdrawal of the cylinder from the mounting member upon movement of the cylinder to a predetermined position relative to the mounting member and, the application of an outward stress on the cylinder to disengage the cylinder.
2. In a lock device of the character described, a mounting member, a lock cylinder mounted therein, an abutment carried by the mounting member, an abutment carried by the lock cylinder and cooperating with the mounting member carried abutment to normally prevent withdrawal of the lock cylinder from the mounting member, and one of said abutments having a portion thereof yieldable to permit withdrawal of the lock cylinder when in a predetermined position relative to the mounting member and subjected to an axial stress.
3. A look device, comprising a mounting memher, a lock cylinder movable therein in the performance of its locking functions, an abutment carried by the mounting member, an abutment carried by the lock cylinder and normally engageable with said mounting member carried abutment to prevent withdrawal of the lock cylinder means whereby said abutments may be disengaged from each other upon movement of the lock cylinder to a predetermined position relative to the mounting member, and yieldable means normally preventing withdrawal of the lock cylinder when in said predetermined position, said last means yielding upon the application of an axial stress on the lock cylinder when in said predetermined position to 'free the cylinder for withdrawal.
4. A look device comprising, a mounting member, a lock cylinder member movable therein in the performance of its normal locking functions, an abutment carried by the mounting member and engageable in a groove formed in the lock cylinder member to secure the lock cylinder member in the mounting member without interfering with the locking functions of the lock cylinder member, said groove having an outlet whereby the abutment may be disengaged therefrom when the members are in a predetermined relative position, and yieldable means normally blocking the outlet to prevent accidental withdrawal of the lock cylinder member, said yieldable means being movable to inoperative position by the application of outward stress to withdraw the lock cylinder member.
5. In a lock device of the character described, a mounting member, a lock cylinder movable therein and having an extension, an abutment carried by the mounting member and normally engageable in a groove formed in the lock cylinder extension to releasably secure the lock cylinder in the mounting member, the lock cylinder extension having a portion thereof cut away to provide an entrance to the groove through which the mounting member carried abutment is movable to permit withdrawal of the lock cylinder when in a predetermined position relative to the mounting member, and yieldable means carried by the lock cylinder extension and engageable with the mounting member abutment when the lock cylinder is moved to said predetermined position, whereby the withdrawal of the cylinder necessitates the application of unusual stress on the cylinder.
