My invention relates to" looks having a locking bolt adapted to enter a suitable keeper being applicable to rim locks, mortise locks,
I or locks' of various other styles.
The principle object of the invention is the production of a lock of simplicity of construction which shall have spherical members such as balls associated with the locking bolt which shall provide additional locking means serving, in conjunction with said locking bolt, to
prevent an unauthorized manipulation or opening of the lock.
A further object of the invention is the production of a lock of the above type which shall have included in the mechanism thereof a supplemental bolt adapted to actuate the aforesaid, spherical elements.
A still further object of the invention is the production of a lock of 'the pin tumbler type which shall be provided with novel and simple means permitting theadjustment of the position-of the cylinder whereby the lock tive of its thickness but'the adjustment may not be effected unless the key plug been rotated by theproper key to a predetermined position.

Referring in detail to the several figures of the. drawing:

Mounted on the lock-casing is an operating handle or knob 7 the shank of which is sup-' ported within a bearing 8. having a squared exterior surface whichlbearing is fastened to 1 \i the inner side of the front wall of the casing.

Each of said transverse bores holds two spherical members or balls 16 which are retained therein and are prevented from falling outwardly therefrom by headings 17 formed on the metal of the bolt adj acentthebores but'which permit the balls to protrude outwardly from the bores for a certain distance, not quite halfway, as shownin Figs. 1 and 4:. The body 9 of the locking bolt is also provided withshoulders 18 adapted ;to engage theend wall of the lock casing to prevent the bolt from being completely projected out of thecasing.
19 indicates the body portion of a supplemental bolt which is provided with forwardengage the ribs 12 of the arms 11. A compression spring 24 carried within a suitable receptacle or bore in the body 9 of the locking bolt engages a side of the body 19 of the supplemental bolt and tends by its action to slide said supplemental bolt inwardl within the lock casing whereby the ends 0 the arms 23 will engage the lugs 13.

Secured to theinner end of the shank of the knob 0r handle 7 and rotatable therewith is an arm 25 to the end of which is pivoted one end of a curved link 26,:as by a pivot 26, said arm being also provided with a walled recess 27 open at its lower side as shown in Fig. 2. The other end of said curved link is pivoted to a pin 28 carried by the body 19 of the supplemental bolt. -Saidbody 19 is also provided with upper and lower pins 29 and 30 respectively and the curved link 26 is provided with a pin 31. A spring 32 encirclesthe pin 28 with its ends bearing against the pins 29 and 31,
said spring acting to retain the link 26 in the position shown in Fig. 2 or in the position shown in dotted lines in that figure with the pivots or pins 26' and 28in horizontal align. ment. The curved link 26 is also-provided with an extension 33 adapted to engage the pin 30 to limit the pivotal movement of said link on the pins orpivots 26 and 28. In some cases it is desirable to have the lower portions of the transverse bores 15 inclinedinwardly towards thecenter thereof as shown at 34in dotted lines in Fig. 4 so that the spherical members or balls 16 in each bore will tend to move or fall towards each other by gravity unless they are forced or spread outwardly away from each other by the plug members 20 as will be hereinafter explained.
The cover plate 6 of the lock casing is provided with two outwardly extending rods 35 riveted thereto and having'a series of notches 36 therein. These rods protrude within an annular opening 37 cut through the door 1 and receiving the cylinder 38 of a conventignal pin tumbler lock which is provided with the ordinary face plate 39 carrying an escutche'on ring 40. Mounted in cylinder 38 is a key plug 41 to which is connected a spindle 42 supported in a. rotatable bearing 43 mounted in the cover plate 6 of the lock casing. The innerend of said spindle carries an operating finger 44 on which is mounted a roller stud 45 engaging within the walled recess 27 on the arm 25.
A portion of the key plug 41 is flattened at opposite sides thereof as at 46 which sides are adapted to register with suitable slots 47 cut through opposite sides of the cylinder 38. The cylinder 38 is also provided with two pairs of oppositely disposed perforated heads 48, the heads of each pair being spaced apart from each other-and each pair slidably receiving one of the rods 35, whereby the cylinder is supported on said rods. A U-shaped spring 49 partially encircles the cylinder 38 intermediate each pair of heads 48 and is supported within the slots 47 thereof and engages the key plug 41. Said spring extends upwardly through the space intermediate each pair of heads 48 and is provided with looped portions 50 and arms 51 extending downwardly therefrom and adapted to en- 'gage the notch-es 36 in the rods 35.
- The position of the cylinder 38 may be adjusted on the rods 35 for any thickness of the door to which the device is to be applied.
l/Vhen it is applied to a door having a thickness of that shown in Fig. 1 the cylinder is in the position shown on said rods, theface plate 39 being substantially flush with the outer surface of the door and the arms 51 of the spring engaging in notches 36 adjacent the forward ends of the rods 35. l/Vh'en the'key plug has been rotated by means of a suitable key to the position shown in Fig. 3 the high or rounded portion of said key plug spreads the spring outwardly in such manner that the end portions of the spring are compressed and a small space obtains intermediate the arms 51 and the body of the spring making a further compression of the end portions of the spring and removal of the arms 51 from the notches impossible. This removal may only be effected by rotation of the key plug through an angle of 90 whereby the spring will expand and bear against theflattencd sides 46 of the key plug. The spring 49 therefore acts as a lock-to prevent adjustment of the position of the cylinder on the rods 35 until the proper key has been inserted in the key plug and the key plug rotated to the proper position. WVhen so rotated the ends of the spring may be compressed manually by pressure applied laterally to either side of the looped portions 50 to release the arms 51 thereof from engagement with the notches 36, thus permitting the cylinder 38 to be slid on the rods 35 into a new position. When the proper position has been secured the key plug is again rotated through 90 by means of the proper key whereupon the arms 51 Wlll be locked against removal from the new notches which they engage. I have shown by the dotted line 52 in Fig. 1 the outer surface of a door of smaller thickness than tlie door shown in full lines in that figure and I' have also shown in dottedlines the face plate 39 and heads 48in the position which they would assume when the device is applied to such door.

The locking bolt may be withdrawn from the keeper housing by operation or rotation of the handleor knob 7 in the proper direction. Upon the beginning of the rotation thereof the curved link 26. is swung on its p1v0ts 26' .and 28 against the action of the "spring 32 and the pressure of the spring 26 against the supplemental bolt acts to force said bolt inwardly until the inner ends thereof contact with lugs 13. This partially re tracts the plugs 20 within the bores 14 and releases the bevelled ends 21 from engagement with the balls 16. Further rotation of the knob or handle 7 retracts theniain locking bolt carrying the supplemental bolt there with within the casing in an obvious manner whereby the locking bolt is entirely with drawn from the keeper housing and the door may be swung open. As the main bolt is withdrawn. from the keeper the balls 16 strike against the wall of the keeper adjacent the slot 4 which acts to force the balls in wardly within the transverse bores 15 and towards each other, thus permitting the lock ing bolt to be withdrawn without interference from the balls. If thelower portion of the bores 15 islinclined inwardly as shown at 34 in Fig. 4 the balls 16, as soon as the bevelled ends 21 of the plugs-2O are disengaged therefrom, will roll centrally towards each other by gravity and into engagement with each other which will prevent the balls from strikcurved link 26 and other adjacent parts take the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2.
To lock the'- door and project the locking bolt within the keeper housing the handle or knob 7 is rotated in an opposite direction.
This swings the curved link on its pivots to project the locking bolt forwardly. The supplemental bolt travels simultaneously with the locking bolt, the spring 24 acting to momentarily retain the ends of arms 23 in engagement with the lugs 13 and until the end of the locking bolt enters the keeper housing. When the shoulders 18 of the locking bolt engage the end wall of the lock casing, however, the plug members 20 of the supplemental bolt areprojected within the bores 14 of the locking bolt and the bevelled ends of said plugs are forced intermediate the balls 16 and act to spread them outwardly into the position shown in Fig. 4.
It is manifest that the locking and unlocking movements just described may be just as effectively procured by means of the proper key inserted in the key plug 41 anda rotation of said key plug inasmuch as said plug is connected, as heretofore described, with the arm 25 through the spindle 42, finger 24, roller stud 45 and walled recess 27.
In the modification illustrated in Figs. 7 to 10 inclusive" the forward end or body of the main locking bolt which is indicated at 52 is substantially I-shaped while the rear end of the bolt is slotted as at 53 to form arms 54 slidably engaging the squared bearing 8 for the handle or knob 7. The web portion of the .sides of the body of the locking bolt and in said indentations 57 to prevent said supplemental bolts from falling outwardly. Said supplemental bolts carry balls 16 in suitable transverse'bores 59 extending therethrough the balls being retained in said bores by suitable headings as in the preferred formof the invention. As clearly shown in Fig; 10 the lower portions of the bores 59zare inclined inwardly whereby said balls 16 have a tend ency to fall towards each other and into engagementwith the main locking bolt by the action of gravity.
The supplemental bolts 58 are provided with suitable recesses or receptacles each carrying a compression spring 60 bearing against lugs 61 on the main locking bolt, one of. said lugs 61 acting as a stop adapted to engage the extension 33 of the curved link 26 as in the preferred form of the invention.
The outer end of said curved link is pivoted by a pin 62 to the main locking bolt and a spring 63 encircles said pin and the ends thereof engage pins 64 and-65 carried by the bolt 5.2 and link 26 respectively} The function of said spring 63-is the same as in the preferred form of the invention. The bolt 52 also carries a pin 66'the ends of which slidably engage in slots 67 in the supplemental bolts 58.

Wardly by the action of gravity and extend partially within the opening 55. Meanwhile the ends of the pin 66 have reached the ends of the slots 67 in the supplemental bolts so 'that a continued rotation of the handle or knob retracts the bolt 52 carrying the bolts 58- with it within the casing, the balls 16 clearing the end wall of the keeper housing in an obvious manner. To project the boltwithin the keeper, the reverse movements of the parts obtain, the continued movement of the bolt 52 after the shoulders 56 have engaged the end walls of the lock casing acting to force the balls 16 outwardly and out of the opening 15.
What I claim as my invention is 1. In a lock, a casing containing the lock- .ing mechanism, a cylinder, a key plug therein, means connecting the key plug and look ing mechanism, means extending from said casing on which saidfcylinder is slidably mounted and means for locking said cylinder on said extending means, said locking means being adapted to be released only when said key plug has been rotated to a predetermined position by means of the proper key therefor. I

In a lock, a casing containing the locking mechanism, a cylinder, a key plug therein, means connecting the key plug and looking mechanism, means associated with said casing on 'which said cylinder is slidably and adjustab-ly mounted and means engaging'said key plug and said associated means for locking said cylinder on said associated means and adapted to be released to permit movement of said cylinder only when said key'plug has been rotated to a predeter-' mined position by means of the proper key therefo v 3. 8. A look, including, in combination, a bolt, a bolt-shifting member movably associated with said bolt, actuating means connected with said member, means whereby upon said actuating means being operated said member and bolt will initially move as .one unit, said bolt subsequently ceasing to .position beyond the same during said continued movement, and means whereby a return movement of said actuating means will cause said locking means to be rendered inoperative to subsequently retract said bolt.
34. A lock, including, in combination, a bolt projectible into a keeper, supplemental locking means housed within said bolt and projectible beyond the same, and means connected with said supplemental means for actuating the same and projecting said bolt, whereby upon said boltbeing forcibly retracted, said actuating means will remain inoperative, said supplemental locking means preventing a retraction of said bolt from within said keeper. 4

A lock, including, in combination, a bolt, supplemental locking means carried by said bolt, means. for rendering said supplemental means operative upon said bolt being projected, means permitting the force of gravity to act'upon said supplemental locking means to render thesame inoperative upon saidbolt being retracted, and means for positively rendering said locking means inoperative.
36. A look, including, in combination, a bolt, means extendible from the side faces of the same and acting to supplement the locking action of said bolt, means for rendering said supplemental locking means operative, means permitting the same to become inoperative, and further means for positively forcing said locking members into inoperative position.
37. A lock, including in combination, a main bolt, a supplemental bolt associated therewith, means for projecting both of said bolts, and means for urging a retraction of one only of said bolts.
38. A device of the character described, including in combination, a bolt, a bolt-projecting member slidably carried within the body of said bolt, and actuating means con-.
stantly and movably connected with said member;

A lock, including a bolt, a keeper there- I for, means for actuating said bolt, a plurality of locking means acting under the influence of gravity to be normally housed within said bolt, and means for moving said locking means in opposite directions with respect to each other and beyond the side faces to engage with said keeper and prevent aretrac tion of the bolt therefrom.
40.A lock, including, in combination, a main locking boltfor entry into a keeper, means associated with said bolt and engageable with said .keeper for preventing a retraction of said bolt, a supplemental bolt controllingthe operation of said means, and main bolt-actuating .means constantly connected with said supplemental bolt. i
41. A lock, including a bolt, a keeper therefor, means .for actuating said bolt, a plurality of spherical locking relatively movable means normally housed within said bolt adjacent the sidefacesthereof and mounted for slidable movement in opposite directions, and
