This invention relates to a shredder for vegetables and the like, the general object of the invention being to provide a handle device having a plurality of looped members projecting from its 5 ends which when drawn over an article or the article drawn over the members, will act to shred the article.
Another object of the invention is to provide a plurality of carriers for the looped members whereby shredders of different sizes may be used.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which:
Fig. 1 is a side view of the invention.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view through one end thereof.
Fig. 3 is a section on line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a view of one of the members.
Fig. 5 is a section on line 5-5 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 6 is a section on line 6-6 of Fig. 8.
Fig. 7 is a fragmentary elevation showing a modification.
Fig. 8 is a similar view showing a further modification.
In these drawings, the numeral l indicates a combined handle member and holder which is of hollow construction and of rectangular shape in cross section as shown more particularly in Fig. 3. This member tapers from one end to the other and has one end bowed outwardly and its other end bowed inwardly as shown in Fig; 1. A block 4 or carrier 2 removably fits in each end of the member and has a plurality of longitudinally extending slots 3 therein for receiving the limbs of the substantially U-shaped members 4, the bight parts of which form the cutters. The outer end of each finger formed by the slots 3 is bowed inwardly as shown at 6 so that the rounded bight of the member 4 and this end of the tongue or finger forms a substantially circular opening through which the material cut by the device passes. Each carrier 2 fits snugly in an end of the member I and if the frictional fit is not sufficient, screws 1 may be used for holding each carrier in place, these screws passing through the side edges of the member I.
It will be seen from Fig. 5 that the end 6 of each tongue or finger 5 curves downwardly and forwardly as shown at 8. As shown in Fig. .1, 5 the carrier 2 at the small end of the member I is bowed outwardly while the carrier 2' at the large end of the member I is slightly bowed inwardly. Thus, either end of the device can be used in accordance with the article to be oper- 10 ated upon. I intend to use carriers having different sizes of cutters thereon which can be substituted for those shown in Fig. 1 so that cutters of the desired size can be placed in the member I.
Also as shown in Figs. 7 and 8, the bight parts 5 of the cutters can be made of different shape instead of the rounded shape as shown in Figs.
1, 2 and 4.
For instance, in Fig. 7, the cutting part 9 is straight while that shown in Fig. 8 is of V-shape 20 as shown at 9.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of the invention will be readily apparent.
It is to be understood that changes may be 25 made in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claims.
I claim:-
1. A device of the class described comprising a hollow elongated handle member tapered from one end to the other, a carrier mounted in each end of the handle member and having longitudinally extending slots therein and a plurality of 35 substantially U-shaped members having their 1 limbs fitting in the slots with their bight portions projecting from said carriers and forming cutters. Y
2. A device of the class described comprising a hollow elongated handle member tapered from one end to the other, a carrier mounted in each end of the handle member and having longitudinally extending slots therein and a plurality of substantially U-shaped members having their limbs fitting in the slots with their bight portions projecting from said carriers and forming cutters, one carrier havingits outer end bowed outwardly and the other carrier having its outer end bowed inwardly.
