ADHESIVE TAPE OR BANDAGE BOX Filed Aug. 1, 1930 INVENTOR.
BY Woman Patented Oct. 27, 1931 UNITED STATES ARTHUR J. ANDERSON, F BINIE'OBD, NORTH DAKOTA ADHESIVE TAPE OR BAN'DAG-E BOX Application filed August 1, 1930. Serial No. 472,420.
This invention relates to an adhesive tape or bandage box or container.
The object of -my invention is the construction of a tape box or container, which is provided with simple and eflicient means for cutting or severing the tape at the will of the operator. I Another object of my invention is the 1 m provement of the construction of cutting 1 means in a tape holding device.
A still further object of my invention is the construction of a casing that is provided with a novel cutting knife for cutting the tape.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, my invention comprises certain novel constructions, combinations and arrangements of parts as will be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompan ing 23 drawings, and more particularly pointe out in the appended claims.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a device constructed in accordance with the present invention, while Figure 2 is a longitudinal vertical central sectional view of the same.
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken on line 3-3, Figure 2, and looking in the direction of the arrows.
' Figure 4 is a perspective view of the lmife.
Fi re 5 is a fragmentary, longitudinal sectiona view of another embodiment of my invention. I
Referring to the drawings by numerals, 1
designates a casing or box of any suitable size. This casing is preferably cylindrical in general shape, and is provided with'a tape outlet or guiding slot 3, the edges of which are rolled at 4 to produce a noncutting edge, so that the tape 4, while passing through said slot 3 will not be abraised or cut. The casing 1 is provided with a knife receiving slot 5; slots 3 and 5 are generally of the same width,
for accommodating the tape 4.
The knife 6 is curved throughout its length to conform to the exterior shape of easing 1. This knife 6 is preferably rolled at 7 for receivin fastening pin 8 ;-t is pin 8 is provided with epending prongs 9 which prongs extend through two apertures 10; prongs 9 are bent back parallel with the inner face of casing 1, whereby the knife is hingedly mounted on the casing. On the outer edge of knife 6 is formed a right angled cutting edge 11, which edge enters the receiving slot 5, during the process of cutting the tape 4. On one side edge of the knife 6 depends an integral springy snap lock 12. This snap lock normally fits into groove 13 formed on the side of casing 1, thereby locking the knife 6 from too much play upon the casing 1, although the operator can easily press upon the outer face of the knife for severing the tape 4, by pressing the right angled cutting edge 11 slightly into the slot 5, as shown in Figure 2. If it is desired to swing the knife upward, as shown by dotted lines A, in Fig.- 2, then a slight lateral pull upon the snap lock 12 will release the knife so that it may swing into the position shown by dotted lines A.
The tape 4 is usually retained in a conventional coil within the casing 1 upon a suitable axle 14, and its loose end is threaded through guiding slot 3, then under knife 6, over slot 5, and the operator can draw the desired length beyond the outer edge of the knife, then press slightly upon thevknife, severing the tape at cutting edge 11, which I have found from actual experience, is a very efficient operation.
In the embodiment shown in Figure 5, at the guidin slot 3, I place two rollers 15,
' between w ich passes the tape 4. These rollers perform the same function as the rolled edges 4 in Figure 2.
Normally the curved knife 6 is held just far enough away from casing 1, as its cutting edge, to allow the tape to be threaded freely outwardly, between the casing and the knife, without the cutting edge acting on the tape, but when the operator presses with his finger or thumb upon the knife, the cuttin edge enters the receiving slot 5, quickly cutting the tape.
Either side 16 of the casing 1 may be detachable, or both sides, without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention; this detachability allows quick access to the interior of the casing.
' snap While I have described the preferred embodiments of my invention and illustrated the same in the accompanying drawings, certain minor changes or alteratlons ma appear 5 to one skilled in the art to which this invention relates during the extensive manufacture of the same, an I, therefore, reserve the ri ht to make such changes as shall fairly fa within the scope of the appended claims. What I claim is:
' 1. In a, device of the class described, the combination of a casing provided with a tape guiding slot and a kmfe receiving slot, and a knife over said tape guiding slot and adapted to enter said kmfe receivm slot. y 2. In a device of the class escr-ibed, the combination of a casing provided on one side with a snap hook receivinggroove, a cutting knife grovlded on one edge with a dependmg 00k, and said snap hook adapted to normally be seated in said receiving groove for limiting movement of the knife upon the cam 3. %n a device of the classdescribed, the combination of a casing provided with apertures, a movable knife contiguous to said casing, said knife provided with a fastening pin, sald pin'provlded with depending j rongs, said pron I extending through sai apertures and nt back upon sald casing, and
fastening means on the knife and casing for limiting movement of the knife.
4. In a device ofthelass described, the combination of a cylindrical-like casing rovided with a circular groove in one s1 e, a curved knife parallel with the outer face of said casing, said knife rovided at its outer end with a right angle cuttin edge and at its inner end with an inwar 6g extending rolled edge, a pin in said rolled ge and provided w1th prongs extending through and folded back upon the casing, said casin provided under the knife with a tape i mg slot and also under said right angle cutting edge with a receiving slot, and said knife provided at one edge with 21. depending sprin snap hook a apted to be normally seats in sa1d circular groove of the casing, substantially as shown and described. In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature.
. ARTHUR J. ANDERSON.
