This invention relates to safety razors and is particularly directed toward a novel form employing a double-edged ribbon blade of considerable length which may be unspooled from a magazine to present successive unused portions as desired. i
The principal object of this invention is to provide a new and improved form of razor using a double-edged blade.
Another object is to provide a novel form of disposable blade magazine.
Another object is to provide a novel form of holder for containing a disposable magazine.
Another object is to provide a novel form of shaving razor using a double-edged blade and` which is adapted for economical manufacture on a quantity basis.
A further object is to provide a shaving razor utilizing a double-edged ribbon blade and constructed in a manner so that the sharpened edges of the blade are kept out of contact with parts of the razor in order to maintain maximum sharpness.
Other and more detailed objects and advantages will appear hereinafter in connection with the drawings and the following description thereof.

Referring now to the drawings, the holder,
generally designated at I0, is generally rectangular in shape and relatively thin compared to its length and width. The lower portion of the holder Iii may be curved to iit the hand, as shown in Figures 1 and 3. A magazine II is received into the pocket I2 deiined by the sides and bottom of the holder I0, and this magazine carries a iiexible ribbon blade I3 of considerable length. Both edges of the blade are sharpened as indicated at Ill and I5.
The magazine lI is generally rectangular in shape and of such size as to form a snug t when heid in the holder IB. The lower edges of the magazine may be rounded as indicated in the drawings. The magazine may include a base It and a cover Il secured by any means, such as, for example, by means of projecting pin elements It on the base I6 which extend through apertures I9 in the cover I'I and which are later deformed in the manner of a rivet to prevent disassembly. The cover Il may comprise a metal stamping if desired and may be provided with a pair o annular ridges Ila to secure additional stiffness. 1
A horizontal slot 23 provided in the base I6 separates the main portion of the base I6 from the horizontal bridge 2l. An opening 22 in the cover Il is aligned with the base slot 23, and a pair of extending ears 23 and 24 overlie the bridge tl. The ribbon blade I3 extends across the upper surface 25 of the bridge 2l and under the ears 23 and 24. The ear 23 is upwardly curved as at 26 so that the edge of the blade will not be dulled 'by contact with the ear. The ears 23 and 2d serve to maintain the blade in position so that there is a minimum of bowing of the blade when the magazine Il is not contained in the holder lil. The ribbon blade I3 extends from a supply coil 28 positioned within a recess 28 provided in the base I6. The other end of the blade i3 may be received in a mounting slot 3b provided in a take-up drumor reel 3| positioned within the recess 32. The recess 32 is also formed in the base I6 and is positioned symmetrically with the recess 29 with respect to the Ibridge 2 I.
A noncircular opening 33 is provided in the reel 3l, and a cooperating noncircular projection 33 on the knob 35 is carried on the holder I@ and projects through an operture 36 provided in the boss 3l on the holder I0. Friction lock 3E@ between aperture 33 and hub 38 is provided to maintain the projection 34 in engaged position in the noncircular opening 33. ln order that the projection 34 may bedisengaged from the noncircular opening 33 so that the entry and withdrawal of the magazine II may be accomplished, a flange 39 is provided on the projection 34. As can be seen by the phantom lines in Figures 5, the projection 54 may vbe disengaged from the noncircular opening 33 by pulling out the knob 35, whereupon the ange 39 is retracted into the annular chamber lil in the boss 3l, and whereby disassembly is prevented. The cylindrical surface il of the knob may be roughened or serrated as shown.
The reel 3l is provided with outwardly eX- tending hub portions L12 which are received within the axially aligned openings i3 and it provided in the base I and cover` I l respectively. Rotation of the knob serves to wind the ribbon blade I3 onto the reel 3| and hence cause the blade to move across the bridge 2l and to unspool from the supply coil 28.
Rounded surfaces (I5 and l5 are provided on the base I5 and are contacted by the ribbon blade I3 at each end of the bridge ZI. Means areY provided for protecting the edges of the blade I3 against contact with portions of the razor, and as shown in the drawings these means may include spindle lll', p in it carried on the spindle t?, and longitudinal slots d centrally located in the blade I5. The pin 58 engages in the slots fiil so that aXial movement of the coiled ribbon blade is prevented. The slots i9 are of sufficient length that they may be engaged by the pin llt when the blade I3 is in the coiled position as shown in Figures 5 and 6. Centering bosses 52 and 53 of the spindle l1 are journaled in apertures in the base I5 and cover I7, respectively. Correct alignment' of the blade at the end adjacent the take-up reel 3l is maintained by means of groove i3 deiined by shoulders Vl and 'I8 on the rounded surface 55. Only slight clearance between the edges of the blade and the shoulders 'I7 and 'IB is provided. Either edge of the blade may come in contact with the shoulders, but this is not disadvantageous since the portion of the blade passing through the groove I6 has been used in shaving and it is no longer necessary that further dulling of the blade by contact with the razor be avoided. Tension is maintained on the blade I3 at all times as described below. By means of this tension, and the fact that the blade is unwound from the supply coil 28 in correct position and maintained in correct alignment by the groove '55, the desired position of the blade I3 is maintained so that the sharpened edges of the blade I3 do not come in contact with any portions or the razor until after use.
Means are provided to prevent unspooling of the reel 3l and thereby maintain tension on the ribbon blade I3. As shown in the drawings, this means includes a plurality of ratchet teeth 5d formed on the side face of the reel 3|, together with a pawl element 55 for engaging the teeth 5d. This pawl element 55 may be formed as an integral part of the cover I'I and may be separated by a stamping operation from the remainder of the cover along the radial line 56 and intersecting circumferential line 5'I. The pawl 55 is deformed inwardly as shown in Figure 9, and its integral connection with the cover Ii provides suicient resilience to permit the pawl to deflect outwardly and allow the ratchet teeth 54 to pass by in one direction. Reverse rotation of the reel 3i is prevented. From this description it will be observed that a ratchet and pawl device has been provided for preventing a reverse rotation of the reel 3i, which device requires no separate or additional parts and which may be manufactured economically on a quantity basis. The tendency of the coil loops to expand within the recess 29, together with the friction ci the blade I6 over the curved surface 45, provides sufcient frictional resistance to maintain proper tension on the blade as it reaches the bridge 2i. The ratchet device prevents unwinding of the blade at the other end of the bridge.
Theribbon blade I3 extends fromV the supply coil 28 through a slot 58 leading from the recess 29 to the curved surface 45, the outer end of the slot being defined by the upper edge 5S of the end wall 60. A similar slot 63| is provided on the other'side of the base I 6 communicating with the recess 32. Nonmetallic sealing elements G2 and 53' may be provided adjacent the slots 55 and 5I in a position to contact the ribbon blade I3... rThese sealing elements 62 and 53 assist in excluding entrance of water or foreign matter into the recess 29 and 32.
`Means are provided for maintaining the magazine II in positionV in the pocket I2 or" holder Iii and at the same time to clamp the ribbon blade inrposition for shaving. As shown in the drawings, this means includes clamping bar Siland spring 65. lamping bar 64 is pivotally .connected to holder lil by means of pin el and bracket 5t. The middle portion 69 of clamping bar 54 is of greater thickness than the remaining portions thereof so that the middleV portion 5S of the bar may clamp down on the blade I5 without interference from the Vears 23 and 2d, asshown in Figures l and 4. The end portion it of the clamping bar @4 is outwardly bent so that it may be engaged in the depression 'H on the side of the holder I5, thus providing spring securing means for the clamping bar. Spring 55, secured to the holder by means of pins l2, is provided to force the magazine upwardly and against the clamping bar. The clamping Vbar 513, cooperating with bridge 25 and spring S5 exerts suflicient pressure on the blade I3, so that the blade is held sufciently rigid for shaving. An aperture I3 may be provided in the bottom portion of the holder so that an object may be inserted therethrough to push the magazine I I out of the holder when desired. The usual comb teeth I4 are provided along the upper edges of the holder.
The magazine I I may be installed in the holder I3 merely by swinging the clamping bar 5:3 out of the way, pulling out the knob 35, and sliding the magazine Il into the pocket I2. Recess l5 in the holder I!) affords clearance for the annular ridges IIa. The clamping bar is then swung yinto its secured position as shown in Figure l, and the knob 35 is pushed inwardly to engage the projection 34 in the noncircular opening 33. The razor is then ready for use.
When the exposed or active portion of the sharpened edges I4 Vand I5 becomes dulled through use the knob 35 isrotated to bring a fresh portion into position on the bridge 2i. A very large number of active lengths are thus provided on the relatively long ribbon I3. When the blade I3 has been completely exhausted, that is, wound on the reel 3l, the clamping bar @d is opened andthe used magazine I I withdrawn and discarded. A new magazine is then inserted into the pocket I2 as outlined above, and the device is again ready for use. The new magazine may be handled without using great care since the cutting edgesV I4 and I5 are well guarded and shielded against contact, except for the exposed or active length extending along the bridge 2i. If desired, a portion of the blade I3 which is initially exposed may have its cutting edges I4 and l5 dulled to further insure against accidental injury when installing the magazine H into the holder l0. When once installed, the knob 35 is turned to bring the sharpened portion of the blade into operative position. The last portion of blade which is exposed may likewise have its cutting edges dulled to insure against injury when the magazine is Withdrawn from the holder.
Having fully described my invention, it is to be understood that I do not wish to be limited to the details herein set forth, but my invention is of the full scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. In a safety razor, the combination of: a holder; a disposable magazine member adapted to be removably contained in the holder, said magazine member having a recess for a ribbon blade coil; clamping means including a movable element adapted to secure the magazine member in operative position in the holder; and a spring member in said holder adapted to force the magazine against said movable element, thereby maintaining the magazine in operative position.
2. In a safety razor, the combination of a holder; a disposable magazine member adapted to -be removably contained in the holder, said magazine member having a recess for a ribbon blade coil and provided with a pair of spacedapart blade-contacting ears; and clamping means on said holder including a movable element adapted to secure the magazine member in operative position in the holder, said element having a portion shaped to cooperate with said ears in contacting a ribbon blade.
3. In a double-edged safety razor, the combination of: a holder; a disposable magazine member adapted to be removably contained in the holder, said magazine member having a recess for a double-edged ribbon blade coil and provided with a pair of blade-contacting ears, said ears being spaced to present a two-sided shaving area therebetween; and clamping means including a movable element adapted to secure the magazine member in operative position in the holder.
4. In a double-edged safety razor, the combination of: a holder; a disposable magazine member adapted to be removably contained in the holder, said magazine member having a recess ior a double-edged ribbon blade coil and provided with a pair of blade-contacting ears, said ears being spaced to present a two-sided shaving area therebetween; and clamping means including a movable element on the holder adapted to secure the magazine member in operative position in the holder with said ears adjacent said clamping means.
5. In a double-edged safety razor, the combination of a holder; a disposable magazine member adapted to be removably contained in the holder, said magazine member having a recess for a double-edged ribbon blade coil and provided with a pair of blade-contacting ears, said ears being spaced to present a two-sided shaving area therebetween; and clamping means including a movable element adapted to secure the magazine member in operative position in the holder with said ears under said clamping means.
6. In a safety razor, the combination of a holder; a disposable magazine member adapted to be removably contained in the holder, said member having a recess for a` ribbon blade coil and provided with a pair of blade-contacting ears, said ears being spaced to present a twosided shaving area therebetween; and clamping means on said holder, said clamping means comprising a clamping bar pivotally connected to the holder and adapted to secure the magazine member in operative position in the holder with said ears under said clamping bar.
7. In a safety razor, the combination of: a holder; a disposable magazine member adapted to be removably contained in the holder, said member having a recess for a ribbon blade coil and provided with a pair of spaced-apart bladecontacting ears; and a clamping bar pivotally connected to said holder, the operative surface of said clamping bar being formed so as to cooperate with said ears in contacting a ribbon blade, while maintaining the magazine :in operative position in the holder.
8. In a safety razor, the combination of: a holder; a disposable magazine member adapted to be removably contained in the holder, said member having a recess for a ribbon blade coil and provided with a pair of blade-contacting ears; a clamping bar pivotally connected to said holder, the operative surface of said clamping bar being formed so as to cooperate with said ears in contacting a ribbon blade; and a spring member in said holder adapted to force the magazine against said clamping bar, thereby maintaining the magazine in operative position.
9. In a double-edged safety razor, the combination of a holder; a disposable magazine member adapted to be removably contained in the holder, said member having a recess for a doubleedged slotted ribbon blade coil and provided with a spindle having a pin thereon for engagement in a slotted blade coil; and clamping means on said holder including a movable element adapted to secure the magazine member in operative position in the holder.
10. In a double-edged safety razor, the combination of; a holder; a disposable magazine member adapted to be removably contained in the holder, said member having a recess for a doubleedged slotted ribbon blade coil and provided with a spindle having a pin thereon for engagement in a slotted blade coil; and clamping means on said holder, said clamping means comprising a clamping bar pivotally connected to the holder and adapted to secure the magazine in operative position in the holder with said ears in engagement under said clamping bar.

In a safety razor, the combination of: a holder; a disposable magazine member adapted to be removably contained in the holder, saidV member having a cavity for a double-edged slotted ribbon blade coil and provided with a spindle having a pin thereon for engagement in said slotted blade coil; a clamping bar pivotally connected to said holder, the operative surface of said clamping bar being formed so as to cooperate with said ears in contacting a ribbon blade; and a spring member in said holder adapted to force the magazine against said clamping bar, thereby maintaining the magazine in operative position.
12. In a double-edged safety razor, the combination of a holder; a disposable magazine member adapted to be removably contained in the holder and provided with a pair of blade-contacting ears; a double-edged ribbon blade coil rotatably contained in a recess in said magazine member, said ribbon blade having a plurality of longitudinal slots centrally thereof; a spindle journaled in the recess in said magazine, said spindle having a pin thereon, said pin being engaged in said slots to restrict axial movement of said coil; and clamping means on said holder including a movable element adapted to secure the magazine member in operative position in the holder.
13. In a double-edged safety razor, the combination of: a holder; a disposable magazine member adap-ted to be removably contained in the holder, said magazine member having a recess for al double-edged ribbon blade supply coil and a second recess to receive used portions of the blade; a winding reel journaled in said second recess; a winding knob rotatably mounted on the holder; a projection on the knob adapted to engage a recess in the reel whereby the latter may be turned; and means whereby the projection may be disengaged from the recess without disassembly,
14. In a double-edged safety razor, the combination of: a holder; a disposable magazine member adapted to be removably contained in the holder, said magazine member having a recess for a double-edged ribbon blade supply coil and a second recess to receive used portions of the blade; a winding reel journaled in said second recess; a winding knob rotatably mounted on the holder; a projection on the knob adapted to engage a recess in the reel whereby the latter may be turned; means whereby the projection may be disengaged from the recess without disassembly; and clamping means on said holder including a movable element adapted to secure the magazine member in operative position in the holder.
15. In a safety razor magazine, the combination of: a base member having a bridge thereon and having a rst recess therein adapted to contain a double-edged ribbon blade supply coil and a second recess therein adapted to receive used portions of the blade; a winding reel journaled in said second recess, said winding reel having a noncircular recess axially thereof; means whereby a ribbon blade may be led from the rst recess across the bridge and into the second recess; and a cover member for said base member, said cover member having a pair of ears transversely thereof adapted to overlie said bridge and to thus form narrow channels for a ribbon blade, said ears being spaced to present a two-sided shaving area therebetween.
16. In a safety razor magazine and blade assembly, the combination of a base member having a longitudinal bridge member provided with curved surfaces at either end thereof, said base member having a first recess for a double-edged ribbon blade supply coil and a second recess to receive used portions f the blade; a spindle journaled in the rst recess, said spindle carrying a transverse pin thereon; a double-edged ribbon blade adapted to 'be rotatably contained as a coil in the rst recess, said blade having a plurality of longitudinal slots centrally thereof which are adapted to be engaged by said pin, whereby axial movement of the ribbon blade coil with respect to the spindle is restricted; means whereby the ribbon blade may be led from the first recess across the bridge and into the second recess; and a cover member for said base member, said cover member having a pair of ears transversely thereof adapted to overlie said bridge and to thus form a pair of narrow channels for said blade.
17. In a safety razor magazine and blade assembly, the combination of: a base member having a longitudinal bridge member provided with curved surfaces at either end thereof, said base member having a first recess for a double-edged ribbon blade supply coil and a second recess to receive used portions of the blade; a spindle journaled in the first recess, said spindle carrying a transverse pin thereon; a double-edged ribbon blade adapted to be rotatably contained as a coil in the first recess, said blade having a plurality of longitudinal slots centrally thereof which are adapted to be engaged by said pin, whereby axial movement of the ribbon blade coil with respect to the spindle is restricted; means whereby the ribbon blade may be led from the first recess across the bridge and into the second recess; means on the curved surface of the bridge and adjacent said second recess whereby sidewise motion of the ribbon blade is restricted; and a cover member for said base member, said cover member having a pair of ears transversely thereof adapted to overlie said bridge and to thus form a pair of narrow channels for said blade.
18. In a safety razor magazine and blade assembly, the combination of: a base member having a longitudinal bridge member provided with curved surfaces at either end thereof, said base member having a rst recess for a double-edged ribbon blade supply coil and a second recess to receiveV used portions of the blade; a spindle journaled in the rst recess, said spindle carrying a transverse pin thereon; a double-edged ribbon blade adapted to be rotatably contained as a coil in the first recess, said blade having a plurality of longitudinal slots centrally thereof which are adapted to be engaged by said pin, whereby axial movement of the ribbon blade coil with respect to the spindle is restricted; means whereby the ribbon blade may be led from the rst recess across the bridge and into the second recess; a pair of parallel shoulders on the curved surface of the bridge adjacent said second recess, said shoulders forming a groove in which the ribbon blade is carried, thus restricting sidewise motion of the blade; and a cover member for said base member, said cover member having a pair of ears transversely thereof adapted to overlie said bridge and to thus form a pair of narrow channels for said blade.
19. In a safety razor magazine and blade assembly, the combination of: a base member having a longitudinal bridge member provided with curved surfaces at either end thereof, said base member having a first recess for a double-edged ribbon blade supply coil and a second recess to receive used portions of the blade; a spindle journaled in the rst recess, said spindle carrying a transverse pin thereon; a double-edged ribbon blade adapted to be rotatably contained as a coil in the rst recess, said blade having a plurality of longitudinal slots centrally thereof which are adapted to be engaged by said pin, whereby axial movement of the ribbon blade coil with respect to the spindle is restricted; means whereby the ribbon blade may be led from the first recess across the bridge and into the second recess; a pair of parallel shoulders on the curved surface of the bridge adjacent said second recess, said shoulders forming a groove in which the ribbon blade is carried, thus restricting sidewise motion of the blade; and a cover member for said base member, said cover member having an ear transversely thereof adapted to overlie said bridge and to thus form a narrow channel for said blade.
20. In a safety razor magazine and blade assembly, the combination of: a base member having a longitudinal bridge member provided with curved surfaces at either end thereof, said base member having a first recess for a double-edged ribbon blade supply coil and a second recess to receive used portions of the blade; a spindle journaled in the rst recess, said spindle carrying a transverse pin thereon; a double-edged ribbon blade adapted to be rotatably contained as a coil in the rst recess, said blade having a plurality of longitudinal slots centrally thereof which are adapted to be engaged by said pin, whereby axial movement of the ribbon blade coil with respect to the spindle is restricted; means whereby the ribbon blade may be led from the first recess across the bridge and into the second recess; a winding reel journaled in said second recess having means for attaching the end of said ribbon blade thereto and having means whereby the reel may be turned so that used portions of the blade may be wound thereupon; ratchet means cooperating with said winding reel so that tension may be maintained on said ribbon blade; and a cover member for said base member, said cover member having a pair of ears transversely thereof adapted to overlie said bridge and to thus form a pair of narrow channels for said blade.
21. In a safety razor, a holder for a disposable magazine member, said holder comprising: means providing a pocket for the reception of a disposable magazine member; a clamping member operably connected to said pocket-providing means, the free end of said clamping member being curved to form a spring member for engagement in a recess in said pocket-providing means; a winding knob rotatably carried on said pocket-providing means, said winding knob having a projection thereon adapted tc be removably directed into said pocket; and spring means in said pocket-providing means adapted to force a magazine member against said clamping means.
22. In a safety razor, a holder for a disposable magazine member, said holder comprising: means providing a pocket for the reception of a disposable magazine member; a clamping member operably connected to said pocket-providing means, the free end of said clamping memberl being curved to form a spring member for engagement in a recess in said pocket-providing means; a winding knob rotatably carried on said pocket-providing means, said winding knob having a projection thereon adapted to be removably directed into said pocket; and spring means in said pocket-providing means adapted to force a magazine member against a portion of said clamping means, whereby the magazine member may be operably contained in said holder.
23. In a magazine for a double-edged razor, the combination of a base member having a bridge thereon and having a rst recess therein adapted to contain a double-edged slotted ribbon blade coil and a second recess therein to receive used portions of the blade; a spindle journaled in the rst recess, said spindle carrying a transverse pin thereon for engagement in a slotted blade coil; means whereby a ribbon blade may be led from the iirst recess across the bridge and into the second recess; and blade edge'contacting means adjacent said second recess, said last means cooperating with the pin on said spindle to maintain unused sharpened edges of the ribbon blade out of contact with the magazine.
24. In a magazine for a double-edged razor, the combination of a base member having a longitudinal bridge member provided with curved surfaces at either end thereof, said base member having a first recess therein adapted to contain a double-edged slotted ribbon blade coil and a second recess therein to receive used portions of the blade; a spindle journaled in the first recess, said .spindle carrying a transverse pin thereon for engagement in a slotted blade coil; means whereby a ribbon blade may be led from the rst recess across the bridge and into the second recess; and a pair of parallel shoulders on the curved surface of the bridge adjacent said second recess, said shoulders forming a groove in which the ribbon blade is carried, thus restricting sidewise motion of the blade, said shoulders cooperating with the pin on said spindle to maintain correct alignment of the ribbon blade.
