. This invention relates to slicing machines and; pertains particularly to. a machine or device designed primarily for restaurantwuse for slicing or splitting buns.

The primary object of the present invention is to provide a simple and easily operated device by-means of which buns such as are served in lunchroorns and restaurants may be easily and, quickly split or sliced horizontally into "two or I more parts. l

-' A further object of the invention isto prpvide a device for splitting buns, which can be operated without the user running any risk of cutting himself.

'A still further objectof the inventionis'to' provide a bun slicer orsplitter by 'means of winch the bun, after being placed in the devicefm'ay be discharged in split condition directly onto'a p w which there extends into the interior of the receiving plate.

The invention will be best understood from a consideration of the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, with the understanding, however, that the invention is not cornined to any strict conformity with the showing of the drawing but may be changed or modified so long as such changes or modifications mark no material departure from the salient features of the invention as expressed in the appended claims.

Referring to the drawing wherein like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the numeral l indicates a portion of a table, bench or counter, to which the device embodying the present invention may be and is shown applied. The device embodying the present invention is indicated generally by the numeral 2 and comprises an elongated rectangular housing having the top and

3 and 4, respectively, the side walls 5 and B, and one end wall which is indicated by the numeral 1. Extending longitudinally'of the side wall 6 and preferably forming an integral part thereof, is a lateral flange 8 which is provided with suitable openings or apertures through which securing screws 9 may be passed forfastening it to the top oithe'supporting body I- adjacent the edge thereof so-that the wall 5 maybe positioned against the edge of thisbody. Adjacent the closed end of the housing, the bottom wall-4 iscut away to provide the outlet ordischarge opening '10 and adjacent the opposite end the topwall 3 is cut awayor terminated short 'of .the adjacentend of the housing to provide'the entrance opening H by means of which the'buns are placed in the housing.

In-addition to terminating sho'rt'of one end of the housing, the top wall 3 also terminates along one longitudinal'edgeshort of the sidewall 6 so that-there is thus formed the lon'gitudinal'top opening which is bordered by the top wall edge l2,rwhich at one end-opens into opening H of the housing.

The edge of the knife I4 is directed toward the end of the housing into which the inlet opening ll opens so that a bun, when drawn through the housing in the manner about to be described, will be moved against the cutting edge of the knife and after passing the same will be discharged through the opening l0.

The pusher device l6 is disposed in the housing with the straight portion l1 thereof positioned against the wall 6 and the free end of the semi-circular or arcuate portion 18 adjacent the wall 5 withthe concave side of the curved portion directed toward the end wall I. This curved portion I8 is provided with the slot I 9 which extends substantially throughout its length, thus dividing the portion into two parts and through this slot, the blade I4 passes in the operation of the pusher.

Disposed across the opening between the edge l2 of the top wall and the wall 6, is a plate 20 which has an integral downturned side portion 2| which overlies the outer side wall 6, and a spacer member 22 is disposed beneath the plate' 20 and upon an inwardly projecting flange or lip 23, which forms a part of the portion ll of the pusher I6. 20, 22 and 23, is passed a screw or bolt 24, which passes through and secures to the top of the plate 20 the knob or handle 25 by means of which the movement of the pusher l6 backward and forward in the housing is eifected.

While there has been illustrated and described a single knife disposed in and obliquely of the housing, it is not, of course, to be limited to the use of one knife, as it is obvious that two or more knives may be employed.

In the use of the present device, the pusher i5 is moved toward the end of the housing opposite that through which the opening l0 opens, in the present case, to the right, so that the portion 18 of the pusher will be disposed beneath the opening II. The bun or other body to be sliced is then placed on the bottom 4 within the convex portion of the pusher and the operator then moves the pusher to the opposite end of the housing by means of the knob 25; This operation causes the bun to be moved against and along the edge of the knife I4 which passes therethrough and through the opening l9 of the pusher element, thus slitting the bun horizontally and after beingslit, the bun is moved onto the point where it will drop out through the opening H! in the bottom wall, so that by holding a plate beneath this opening, a bun will be discharged thereonto in sliced condition.

I claim:-

1. A slicing device comprising an elongated housing having top, bottom and side walls, said top wall having an opening at one end of the housing and said bottom wall having an opening at the opposite end of the housing, said top wall further having an opening longitudinally of the housing, a knife disposed within the housing obliquely thereof and with its cutting edge directed toward the end adjacent the top wall opening, an arcuate body disposed within the housing between the side walls and having a slot for the passage of said knife, said arcuate body further having a straight portion disposedagainst the side wall adjacent the longitudinal opening, and means slidable longitudinally of the top wall and engaged with the straight portion of the arcuate body for effecting the movement of the latter longitudinally through the housing.

2. A slicing device, comprising an elongated body having top, bottom and'side walls, said top wall having an opening at one end of the housing and said bottom wall having an opening at the opposite end of the housing, one of said walls having an opening therein extending longitudinally of the housing, a knife disposed Within the housing obliquely thereof and horizontally between the top and bottom walls and having its cutting edge directed toward the end of the housing adjacent the top wall opening, a body disposed within the housing and extending across the width thereof and having a slot for the passage of said knife, a member mounted upon the housing for movement longitudinally therealong over said longitudinal opening of the said one of the walls, a handle carried by said member, and a connection between the member and handle and extending through said opening and connecting with the said body for facilitating the movement of the body longitudinally of the housing.
