IMPROVEMENT IN COMBINED CLASP AND BUCKLE.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 200,658, dated February 26, 1878; application filed September 29, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J GEN RICHARD J UDD, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in a Clasp and Buckle, which invention is fully set forth in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part hereof, similar letters of reference indicating corresponding parts.
Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my invention, and shows how the same may be worked by hand. Fig. 2 represents my invention as applied to a suspender. Fig. 3 represents a top view. Fig. 4 represents a bottom view. Fig. 5 represents a side view.
The object of my invention is to furnish a device by which cloth, cotton, wool, leather, or any soft material may be firmly clasped in order to stretch it or hold it up.
In the drawings, A and B are two shanks or frames, revolving on a pivot or axle, D, and forming, when closed, the teeth or lips of the clasp at H, which may be indented or corrugated, so as to fasten or bite more firmly.
0 represents the prongs of the buckle, and are attached to the pivot D. The said prongs rest on the extension or upper end of the jaw B, which forms the buckle-front; and the pivot D serves as an axis for the motion of the said prongs, and as a fulcrum, on which the frame B moves and acts as a lever.
I is a movable slide, which may be slid down so as to keep the clasp at H closed, and also serves as a means of holding down the end of the strap F, as shown in Fig. 2, and of checking the frames A and B in their motion on the pivot D.
E represents slight projections, which may be placed on the top of the inner flame B and bottom of outer frame A, and aid the thumb and finger in taking hold when in action.
In Fig. 2, F represents a strap as used in connection with the buckle; and G, part of a suspender, to which my invention may be ap plied. When applied to practical use, the clasp is opened by moving the slide until it is just above the axle D, and then placing the thumb on the top of the inner frame B and the forefinger on the bottom of the outer frame A, and pressing the thumb and finger together and from you, as shown in Fig. 1. The material which it is intended to clasp is then placed between the teeth at H, and the clasp closed by pressing together the upper ends of the frames A and B, and the slide I is moved down over the teeth, so that they cannot open.
Among some of the purposes to which my invention may be applied are suspenders, &c., where the cloth may be directly griped by the clasp without the use of buttons or loops, straps on the back of vests, pantaloons, drawers, &c., which may be tightened or loosened Without changing the position of the buckle, and requiring only one end of the strap to be sewed to the stufl. It may also be used in the trades for stretching any soft material, as leather, skins, canvas, &c.
When applied to some purpose where it is unnecessary to use a buckle and strap for shortening or lengthening, the clasp may be used without the buckle, for the clasp will gripe just as firmly by simply applying a strong pulling force to the upper ends of the frames. Neither is it essential in all cases to use the slide I, for, through the action of the leverage, the teeth of the clasp will bite the more firmly the stronger the pulling force or the power of resistance at the upper ends of the frames.
I claim as my invention A combined buckle and clasp,- arranged as shown, having all its movable parts pivoted on a single axis, with or without the slide, all substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
