In safety razors of the double edge variety; having blade clamping members, it has been customary to provide one of the members with projecting means to position a blade with respect to the guard and retain the blade in shaving position when said members are clamped against the blade. When a bladeis used which is not provided with an aperture that fits the said projec tions to retain the blade in shaving-position the blade is liable to be fitted placed between the clamping members in an inaccurate positionfor shaving.
The object of my invention is to provide a-device or accessory comprising a part of the shaving equipment to be detachably applied to the blade holder or razor head in such a wayas to position or align .a blade between the clamping members and in shaving relation to the guard member so that the said members may be clamped against the blade and said device may be removed from the blade holder or razor. F
In carrying out my invention I provide an adapter to removably and telescopically engage the razor or to be fitted against the blade holder or razor head, said adapter having means to retain it temporarily in a definite position with respect to said blade holder and being provided with means to engage a blade on said-holder to position the blade in shaving relation'to theguard, whereby when the blade has been clamped in shaving position in the holder. the adapter may be removed to enable the razor to be used in shaving without reference to the adapter; I
My invention also comprises novel details of improvement that will be more fully hereinafter set forth and then pointed out in the claims.

The razor illustrated in the accompanying drawing is of a well known variety, comprising a guard member I, a blade cap or backing memberl, and a handle 3. Means are provided to clamp the members I and 2 against the blade, in theexample illustrated the cap or backing member 2 being shown provided with a threaded stem lada'ptedto engage a threaded bore 5 in the handle, whereby the members I and 2 may be clamped against the blade 6 in shaving position. Theguard member is shown provided with a centrally disposed aperture 1 to receive the stem}. V
In'connection with the razor guard it is observed that it is provided with marginal or peripheral portions along its longitudinal edges which extend outwardly from the plane of the guard. The portions of the guard which extend outwardlyof the plane of the guard form engaging and aligning means for the adapter. In each modification as disclosed and illustrated the adapter is provided with means to engage the marginalor peripheral portions which extend fromith'e plane of the guard and thereby align the adapterwith the guard. Portions la extending out of'the plane of the guard are arranged transversely to the plane of the guard and are essential as aligning means for the adapter as disclosed. The transverse portions Id of the guard are adapted in each instance to receive telescopically the peripheral portions of the adapter which aligns the guard and blade. In aligningthe cap, guard and interposed blade, it is to be noted that the alignment between guard and blade is produced by the adapter while the cap is shifted to bring its ends flush with the ends of the guard. The blade is guided into longitudinal alignment and also transverse alignmentas well as maintained against any variety of displacement including angular displacement by the adapter. The guard and cap have coacting aligning means as indicated at 4 and l t;mg l6' "i.;"i "I One of the members is provided with projecting means, at 8, shown on the guard member in spaced relation, adapted to fit a corresponding aperture in a blade to retain the blade in shaving relation to the guard. When, however, a blade 5 having an aperture 9 is applied on the guard, which aperture is not adapted to fit the projections 8 to retain the blade in shaving position on the guard, the blade will assume an irregular or misplaced position on the guard but constituting a clearance aperture, as indicated in Fig. 5, so that if the members I and 2 were clamped against the blade in such a position the razor would not be adapted for shaving. In order to position such a blade having the enlarged opening 9 in shaving position onthe guard, I provide an adapter ll] adapted to be detachably fitted on the blade holder in a definite position,
which adapter is provided with means. to engage the blade to position it upon the guard for shaving. The adapter illustrated in Figs. 1 to 6 comprises a plate having an opening ll of sumcient size to slide along the handle 3 and telescopically engage the guard or to be fitted against the under side of the guard member I, the guard teeth or combs la being in position to engage the adjacent sides Illa of the adapter to retain the latter in blade locating position against the guard. The adapter I is provided at its ends or extremities with projections l2, centrally disposed, .adapted to extend along the ends of the blade holder to engage adjacent ends of the blade 6 to position the latter upon the guard member for shaving, as illustrated in Fig. 6. The blade 6 is shown provided with notches or recesses 13 at its ends that are adapted to receive the projections 52 of the adapter.
When a blade having an enlarged aperture 9 is to be fitted in the blade holder the cap 2 is removed, the adapter is placed telescopically against the guard member with its projections [2 extending outwardly at the ends of said member, the blade may be placed upon the guard with the projections l2 fitted at the ends of the blade to position the cutting edges of the blade in proper relation to the guard teeth, the cap 2 will be applied over the blade, and the handle will be screwed on the stem 4 to clamp the blade between the members I and 2 in shaving position The adapter then may be removed from the razor by sliding the adapter along the handle, as in--' dicated at dotted lines in Fig. 2, with the razor ready for shaving.
In the form shown in Figs. 7 to 10 the adapter is provided with the projections I2 at its ends or extremities to receive the end portions of the blade holder and the end portions of the blade, such as the notches: or recesses l3, as in Fig. 9, but instead of having an opening H- to receive the handle 3 the adapter provided with external means to telescopically engage the guard member to position the adapter thereon. In the example illustrated the adapter is provided with spaced side walls M and with corner webs l5, somewhat in the nature of an open box, the parts l4 and 15 being so spaced as to permit therazor head or blade holder to be telescopically inserted into the adapter as shown in Figs. 8, 9 and 10.
When the blade 6 having the enlarged aperture 9 is to be fitted in the blade holder the adapter may be placed in the position shown in Fig. 8, the cap or backing member 2 may be fitted within the adapter with its end portions between and guided by the spaced webs l and opposing the projections [2, (Fig. 9), the blade may be placed within the adapter upon the cap with the projections l2 guiding the ends of the blade, as by entering the recesses l3 thereof, to position the blade upon the cap, and then the guard member I may be placed within the adapter and against the blade, the sides I l of the adapter guiding the guard member in proper shaving relation to the blade. With the parts in the position shown in Fig. 8 the handle :3 may be applied on the stem 4 and screwed against the guard member, whereby the clamping member 5 and 2 will be clamped against the blade while said parts are in the adapter, as in Fig. 10, whereupon the razor with the blade properly fitted thereto may be removed from the adapter for use.
My improvements are simple in construction and eflicient in use in positioning a blade between clamping members in a blade holder without requiring the adapter to remain attached to the blade holder during shaving.
Having now described my invention what I claim is:-
1. An adapter for safety razors having guard teeth, comprising a plate member provided with means for engaging the outer portion of the guard teeth of the razor, and means on the perimeter of said plate member for guiding both transversely and longitudinally into shaving position within the razor, a blade having a large internal clearance aperture, said adapter being boxshaped and thus designed for external contact only with the razor, whereby the adapter may be readily removed from the latter when the elements thereof have been assembled.
2. An adapter for safety razors having guard teeth, comprising a plate member provided with means for engaging the guard teeth of the razor and means on its perimeter for guiding into shaving position within the razor a blade having an internal clearance aperture, said adapter being designed for external contact only with the razor and having an aperture through which the handle of the razor may extend, said aperture being larger than the largest cross-section of the handle, thereby permitting the adapter to be conveniently removed from the assembled razor along its handle.
3. An adapter for safety razors, comprising a plate shaped for externally engaging the guard element of the razor, and means on the perimeter of the plate capable of engaging, in said razor and at its ends, a blade having a large internal clearance aperture, said engaging means acting to align the blade both transversely and longitudinally in the razor, and said adapter having an efiective opening of a size to receive the razor parts with clearance, thus being designed for external contact only with the razor, whereby the adapter maybe readily removed from the latter when its elements have been assembled.
4. An adapter for safety razors, comprising a plate shaped for externally engaging the guard element of the razor and having means on its perimeter capable of engaging in said razor and by its ends a blade having an internal clearance aperture, said means acting to align the blade both transversely and longitudinally in the razor, and said plate having an apertiu'e through which the handle of the razor may extend with clearance in all positions thereon, thereby permitting convenient removal of the adapter.
