Description

March 1, 1932. MURQS 1,847,887
SAFETY RAZOR Filed April 18, 1931 INVENTOR Jbaqv/l flur'aa BY @z ATTORNEY Patented Mar. 1, 1932 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE JOSEPH MUROS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO GILLETTE RAZOR COMPANY,
OF BOSNN, MASSACHUSETTS, A CORPORATION OF DELAWARE SAFETY RAZOR Application file-d April 18,
Safety razors of the double edge variety, comprising blade clamping members and a handle, usually have the blade edges exposed when assembled, so that said edges are liable to become injured by contact with objects.
An object of my invention is to provide a safety razor of the class describedin which the parts may be so assembled as to protect the blade edges when not in use, by re-arranging the parts from a shaving position to a difierent assembled position.
In carrying out my invention I provide a safety razor comprising blade clamping members, and a handle having means for detachably connecting said members, and the handle together with the blade in shaving position, said handle having means to retain the clamping members and the blade together with the blade edges protected by one of said members.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings wherein:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a safety razor embodying my invention;
Fig. 2 is an inverted perspective view of the blade cap or backing member;
Fig. 3 is a partly broken detail view, en-- larged, showing the parts assembled for stor age and protection of the blade edges;
Fig. 4 is a section on line 4, 4 in Fig. 3; and
Fig. 5 is a partly broken plan view of the razor in shaving position.
The blade clamping members of the blade holder illustrated comprise a guard member 1 and a blade cap or backing member 2 adapted to clamp a blade 3 therebetween in shaving position with respect tothe guard teeth 1a of the guard member. At 4 is a handle adapted to be detachably connected with the clamping members. The cap or backing member 2 is.=shown provided with a threaded stem 5 adapted to mesh in a threaded recess 6 at one end of the handle, whereby the members 1 and 2 may be clamped against the blade in a well known way.
The cap or backing member 2 is shown provided with projecting means at 7 adapted to' and to enter an aperture 3a in the blade,
(Fig.
53 enter a recess 8 in the guard member 1931. Serial No. 531,045,
5), for positioning the blade in shaving relation to the guard teeth when clamped between the members 1 and. 2. The blade clamping members may have any other or desired means for positioning the blade between them for shaving.
The guard member has a surface 16 against which the blade may rest when clamped between the members 1 and 2 for shaving. The distance between the guard teeth 1a of the guard member 1 is such that the blade 3 may be placed against the guard memberon the side opposite the surface 16, with the blade edges between the guard teeth to protect said edges, as illustrated in Fig. 4. The stem 5 is adapted to pass through a centrally disposed opening 9 in the guard member to engage the recess 6 in the handle, and said stem is also adapted to pass through said opening 9 when the blade is placed against the outer side of the guard member and the cap member 2 is placed over said blade, as in Figs. 3 and 4. Guard member 1 is adapted to be placed along one side of the handle and to be detachably connected therewith for retaining the blade clamping members and the blade against the handle. In the example illustrated, handle 4 is.shown provided with a hole 10 adapted to'receive the stem 5 and from said hole a relatively narrow slot 11 extends along the handle adapted to receive the reduced portions 5a on the stem 5.
When the parts are to be assembled for storage and protection of the blade edges the clamping members 1 and 2 are removed from the handle and separated, the blade being then placed against the outer side of the guard member 1, and the stem 5 of the cap or backingmember 2 will be passed through the aperture in the blade and through the openin 9 of the guard member. Said guard mem er then will be placed against the handle, the
stem 5 first being pushed through the hole 10 in the handle and then the assembled members 1 and 2 with the blade between them will be slid along the handle so that the reduced portions 5a of the stem will slide along the slot 11 of the handle, whereby the parts Wlll be retained together, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4. In the position of the parts stated the blade edges will be protected by the guard teeth, andsince the outer portion of the stem beyond the reduced portions 5a is larger than said reduced portions, in the nature of a head, the stem will be retained by engagement with the inner wall of the hollow handle.
The reduced portions 5a of the stem 5 provide extended flat surfaces to engage the sldes of the slot 11 to keep the clam ing members on the blade from rotating re atively to the handle, so that said members and blade will be retained against the side of the handle in a substantially parallel relation thereto.
Having now described my invention what I claim is: I
1. A safety razor, comprising blade clamping members, a blade adapted, to fit between said members, means to clamp said members on said blade including a screw-threaded stem on one of said members, a hollow screwthreaded ,handle for -co-operation with said stem, said handle being provided in its side with an opening adapted to receive said stem and with a slot extending from said opening, said stem being provided with a reduced portion adapted to enter said slot for retaining said clamping members and blade against the side of said handle.
2. In a safety razor according to claim I, the reduced portion of said stem being flat to fit the edges of said slot, thereby keeping the stem from rotating relatively to said handle.
JOSEPH MUROS.
