This invention relates to apparatus for the treating of hair and has particular reference to hair waving equipment such as used in beauty shops and elsewhere for imparting a permanent wave to the hair of the head.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a novel article whereby the strands of hair may be wound tightly prior to the application of heat thereto, whereby the wave is set.
One of the important aims of this invention is the contemplation'of a spool for hairwaving apparatus which embodies means for tightening the hair that is wound thereon after the desired amount of winding has taken place and prior to the application of heat.
The embodiment of the present invention in hair waving apparatus produces appliances such as shown and described in my co-pending application for United States Letters Patent Serial 20 Number 680,806, filed July 17, 1933, but with the improvement which permits circumferentially exparading the spool of the apparatus in a manner more fully set down hereinafter in the specification, referring to the accompanying drawing, 25 wherein:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a hair waving spool made in accordance with this invention and mounted in a supporting body similar to that illustrated and described in my co-pending application.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal cross section through the spool.
Fig. 3 is an elevation of one of the ends thereof.
Fig. 4 is a vertical cross section through the spool taken on line IV--IV of Fig. 2.
Fig. 5 is an elevation of the other end of said spool.
Fig. 6 is another cross section taken on line VI-VI of Fig. 2, and,
Fig. '7 is an enlarged, detailed view similar to that shown in Fig. 4, but with the spool expanded and supporting a wound strand of hair.
In using hair waving apparatus of the character to which this invention pertains, it is always desirable to wind a certain amount of hair upon a mandrel or similar article as tightly as possible and then apply heat. One of the difliculties that has presented itself in the operation is the ability to hold the strands of hair in a tightly wound condition. This invention contemplates the use of a spool which may be rotatably mounted upon the supporting body It! and consisting of a hollow member comprising a number of segments [2 which, when assembled, present an annularly,
longitudinally arched member of a nature illustrated.
A clamp ll of the ordinary well known type may be pivotally carried by one of segments I2 through the medium of pin "5 and used to secure the ends of the strand of hair against the member when the winding operation is started. The ends of the hollow spool that is made up of segments I2 are closed by bearing blocks l8 and 20, the former having a tapped opening 22 formed therethrough and cavities 24 formed radially therein for the reception of pins 26 which are carried by segments l2 and and are slidably engaged in cavities 24.
A split ring-shaped spring 28 circumscribes segments 12 at a point where they lie against block 18 when collapsed and this spring is preferably placed within .the annular groove to preclude displacement. Block has an integral pintle 30 whereon is a squared outer portion 32 that may be engaged by suitable bearing structure formed on body ID. A coil spring 34 may be mounted between the block 20 and a portion of body ID as shown in Fig. 1 so that when this novel spool is in the operative position, squared portion 32 will hold the hollow spool from accidentally unwinding. Vent holes 36 formed through bearing block 20 are helpful in ventilating the interior of the spool when heat is applied to the strands of hair 38 which are wound about the same.
Pins 40 carried by segments l2 enter sockets 42 formed in end 20 to allow for the same radial movement on the part of segments l2 as previously described with respect to pins 26. A split ring-shaped spring 44 circumscribes end 20 outside of. segments 12 which surround the former and serve to yieldably urge segments l2 to the collapsed position against end 20. Springs 44 and 28 should be equal in tension so that an even action takes place as the spool is circumferentially expanded.
To expand the hollow spool after strands of hair 38 are wound thereon it is desirable to provide means which is not complicated and which will quickly perform the operation. To carry out this phase of the invention, therefore, shaft 46 having a squared end 48 formed thereon and screw 1 lar 52 looks it against further rotation the suitable key or other instrument not here shown may engage squared end 48 for the purpose of winding the entire spool assembly. After the strand of hair 38 is wound and it is desired to expand the spool to tighten the wound portion of strand 38, it is but necessary to allow spring 34 to move squared portion 32 into the squared bearing of body l0, whereupon reversal of the direction of rotation of shaft 46 will cause it to move longitudinally inwardly so that its tapered end 54 will be forced between jaws 56 that are carried by segments I2 intermediate end blocks 18 and 20 respectively. This action will obviously circumferentially expand the spool by moving segments I2 radially against the yieldable pressure of springs 28 and 44 and after the desired tension is attained, heat may be applied as is customary.
The invention contemplated might be embodied in structures varying in specific character from that shown and described and since such is true, it is desired to be limited only by the spirit of this invention and scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent is:
1. In hair waving apparatus, a spool comprising a plurality of segments combined to form a hollow spool; a bearing block closing each end of said spool; and means interconnecting said segments and blocks permitting radial movement of said segments.
2. In hair Waving apparatus, a spool comprising a plurality of segments combined to form a hollow spool; a bearing block closing each end of said spool; and pins, slidably journalled in said bearing blocks to connect the said segments to the said blocks.
3. In hair waving apparatus, a spool comprising a plurality of segments combined to form a hollow spool; a bearing block closing each end of said spool; pins carried by the segments and journalled in the bearing blocks for slidable radial movement; and a yieldable spring to urge the segments toward a position against the bearing blocks.
4. In hair waving apparatus, a spool comprising a plurality of segments combined to form a hollow spool; a bearing block closing each end of said spool; pins carried by the segments and journalled in the bearing blocks for radial movement; a spring to yieldably maintain the segments against the bearing blocks; and a shaft extending longitudinally into the hollow spool having a tapered face thereon adapted to engage portions of each segment of the spool whereby upon longitudinal movement of the shaft said segments are moved apart to ciroumferentially expand the spool.
5. In hair waving apparatus, a spool comprising a plurality of segments combined to form a hollow spool; a bearing block closing each end of said spool; pins carried by the segments and journalled in the bearing blocks for radial movement; a spring to yieldably maintain the segments against the bearing blocks; a shaft extending longitudinally into the hollow spool having a tapered face thereon adapted to engage portions of each segment of the spool whereby upon longitudinal movement of the shaft said segments are moved apart to circumferentially expand the spool; and a collar mounted on the said shaft to limit its longitudinal movement in one direction after the segments are all against the said bearing blocks.
6. In hair waving apparatus, a spool comprising a plurality of segments combined to form a hollow spool; a bearing block closing each end of said spool; means interconnecting said bearing blocks and segments and permitting radial movement of the latter; a spring circumscribing the spool at each end thereof to yieldably urge the segments toward the completely collapsed position; a jaw on each segment intermediate the ends thereof and within the hollow spool; a tapped opening formed through one of said bearing blocks; and a shaft in screw threaded en gagement with said block, extending through the said opening and having a tapered end adapted to enter between the said jaws as the shaft is.
moved longitudinally into the spool whereby the segments of the spool are moved apart to circumferentially expand the spool.
'7. A device of the character described comprising upper and lower members upon which hair is adapted to be wound, means extending into said members for expanding the same whereby the hair is drawn taut, and resilient means connected to said members and normally retaining said members in closed relation.
