4 Claims.

This invention relates to paper bags and similar receptacles and particularly such as may be produced by machines and processes now in use and without waste of paper at the same time providing means for holding the mouth of the bag closed with means whereby the bag may be readily carried.

In my Patent No. 1,895,267, granted January 24, 1933 I have described the bag of the present invention but the claims of said patent are directed to one of the several forms therein disclosed. In the present application I show some of the identical forms illustrated in said patent but the claims of the present application are directed to modifications not claimed in said patent.

A feature of the bag disclosed'in the present application relates to the provision of means for closing the bag mouth preferably in the form of one or more tabs which in the process of forming the bag are cut from the fiapwhich closes the bottom of the preceding bag section.

A further feature of the invention relates to a bag of this character in which means are provided whereby the same may be readily carried. Further features and advantages will become apparent from the following detailed description and claims when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing in which:-

Figure 1 is a perspective view of the upper portion of my improved bag;

Figure 2 is a similar view of a slightly different form in which two tabs are supplied for closing the bag mouth; and

Figure 3 is a perspective view of the reverse side of the bag shown in Figure 2 and serves to illustrate how the'bag is formed from bag sections without waste of paper.

My improved bag is preferably formed in a manner similar to that of the bag envelope described in my Patent No. 1,7 98,168,,granted March Referring to Figure 1, each bag section is formed with a front wall I and a rear wall 2 and a flap 6 which is a prolongation of the rear wall 2. The bottom of the bag is closed by a flap which is a prolongation of the front wall I as clearly indicated in Figure 3. The flap 6 ofone bag is cut out of the wall 2 of the preceding bag section as is clearly illustrated in Figures 12 and 13 of my said Patent No. 1,798,168.

The bag construction shown in the present application differs from that of my Patent No. 1,895,267 in that the prolongation 6 serves as a handle for carrying the bag and the tabs 9 of the Figure 1 construction or the tabs 53 and it of the Figure 2 construction serve to close the York 1933, Serial No. 684,775

In the Figure 1 construction the paper web is overlapped to a somewhat greater extent than in the Figure 2 construction but in both constructions there are two lines of paste 4 and 5 and the front wall of the bag is provided with either a single tab 9 or with a plurality of tabs l3 and M which are adapted to pass through slits ID or H and I2 respectively. I also form an opening I through both plies of the overlap and between the lines of paste. The tab 9 is likewise between the lines of paste but the tabs l3 and M are outside of the paste lines.

From the consideration of Figure 3 it will be noted that the tabs in the front wall I of the bag are cut out of that portion of the wall 2 which is to form the bottom flap of another bag. Therefore this type of bag, whether provided with one tab or two, can be made without waste.

What is clamed is:

l. A paper bag having a front wall, a tab formed as a prolongation thereof, a rear wall having overlapped plies forming a wide seam, paste lines near the edges of the seam and a slit in the rear wall through which said tab may be passed to close the mouth of the bag, said slit being between the paste lines.

2. A paper bag having a front wall, a tab formed as a prolongation thereof, a rear wall having overlapped plies forming a wide seam,

paste lines near the. edges of the seam and a slit 'ifi'the rearwwall through which said tab may be passed to close the mouth of the bag, a flap formed as aprolongation of the rear wall, a finger hole in said flap passing through both plies thereof and between the paste lines.

3. A paper bag having a front wall, a tab formed as a prolongation thereof, a rear wall having over-lapped plies forming a wide seam, paste lines near the edges-of the seam, a slit'in the rear'wall through which said tab may be passed to close the mouth of the bag, a flap formed as a prolongation of the rear wall, a finger hole in the said flap passing through both plies thereof, said slit and hole being within the paste lines.

4. A paper bag having a front wall and a rear wall, the latter having overlapped plies forming a wide seam, paste lines near the edges of the Y seam, a flap which is a prolongation of the said rear wall, a finger opening through both plies oi the overlap and between the lines of paste, two tabs formed as a prolongation of the front wall and outside of said paste lines and slits in the rear wall adjacent said tabs and through which they may be passed to close the bag mouth.
