IMPROVEMENT IN RETA INERS FOR SEWING-MACHINE ATTACHMENTS.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE REHFUss, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Retainers for SewingMachine Attachments, of which the following is a specification:
The main object of my invention is to provide a hemmer or other analogous sewingmachine attachment with a retaining device which will rigidly secure the said attachment in its proper position, a further object being to permit the ready adjustment of the retainer to any screw-hole in the bed of the sewingmachine.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of my device for securing a sewing-machine attachment, and Fig. 2 a transverse section on the line 1 2, Fig. 1.
A is a hemmer, of which the plate it forms a part. From the upper surface of this plate project two pins, b b, Fig. 2, which are preferably formed by raising, in a well-known manner, portions of the metal of which the plate is composed. These pins are adapted to holes in the inner ends of parallel bars B B, the outer ends of which are connected together by a link, D, and pins 0 e, the distance between the centers of which is the same as the distance between the centers of the pins 1) b. There is in the bed of every modern sewingmachine a threaded orifice for receiving the set-screw by which attachments are secured. The position of this orifice in respect to the needle-hole and the direction of the feed differs in different machines; hence the importance of an adjustable medium,through which a hemmer or other attachment can be secured to the bed of the machine.
The parallel bars can be moved to the right or to the left, according to the position of the threaded orifice, until they have been so adjusted that the stem of the usual set-screw can be passed through the space between the bars into the orifice and screwed tight, so as to cause the bars to confine the hemmer to the bed of the machine.
Although I have shown my retainer as used in connection with a hemming device, it
will serve to retain different kinds of attachments on the bed of the machine.
I wish it to be understood that I do not desire to claim, broadly, the use of two bars as a medium through which a set-screw is caused to confine a sewing-machine attachment; but
I claim as my invention- The combination .of a sewing-machine attachment having two pins, 1) b, with two bars, B and B, adapted to the said pins, and connected together at their outer ends by a link, D, all substantially as set forth.
