Description
WQH. HUCKENSMITH. Shuttles for Sewing-Machines.
No. 140,041, 7 PatentedJune17,1873.
AM PHOTU-UTHOGRAPHIC 00. NH asaonuspnacess) UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM H. HOCKENSMITH, OF BRIDGEPORT, CONNECTICUT.
IMPROVEMENT IN SHUTTLES FOR SEWING-MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 140,041, dated June 17, 1873; application filed May 28, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. HocKEN- SMITH, of Bridgeport, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented a new Improvement in Shuttle for Sewing- Machine; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing and the letters of refer ence marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawing constitutes part of this specification, and represents a front or the open side view of a shuttle.
This invention relates to an improvement in shuttles for sewing-machines, and particularly, in that class which have a lever or bar arranged upon the inside, between which and the case the thread is drawn to produce the requisite tension; and the invention consists in combining with such bar or lever an auxiliary lever and screw working through the lastnam'ed lever, so as to bear one end of the said auxiliary lever upon the principal bar at a considerable distance from the screw, all as more fully and for the purpose hereinafter described.
A is the shuttle-case, within which the bobbin B is arranged in the usual manner. Within the case a lever, a, is arranged, between which and the case the thread is run in the usual manner, and as seen in the drawing. This bar extends into a recess, 0, in the shuttle-head, and beneath the bar an auxiliary lever, D, is arranged curved and extending back onto the bar it within the case. A screw, b, is set through the case, the lever D threaded to correspond to the said screw, the screw being free in the shuttle-case therefore, by turning the screw, the lever D will be raised or lowered accordingly.
By raising the lever it bears upon the bar a at a considerable distance from the screw, and within the case, so that a better and more equal pressure is attained than when the bearing is made by a nut at the screw, or by the screw directly, and the turning of the screw in no way changes the position.
This construction, while affording a better tension, is considerably cheaper than other known constructions.
I claim as my invention In combination, with the tension-bar a within the shuttlecase, and extending into the recess C, the auxiliary lever D and adjustingscrew 1), whereby the adjustment of the bar a is made through the said auxiliary lever D.
WM. H. HOCKENSMITH.
