Description
L. SEXAUER.
Hammers for Sewing-Machines.
Patent-ed Nov. 18; `1373.
UNITED STATES PATENT CEEICE.
LOUIS SEXAUER, OF BROOKLYN, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND JOHN B.
OHRISTOFFEL, OF BROOKLYN, E. D., NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN HEMMRS FOR SEWING-MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 144,706, dated November 18, 1878 application led August 9, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LOUIS SEXAUER, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Hemmer, of which the following is a-speciflc'ation:
This invention relates to the construction of a hemmer, as hereinafter described.
Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved extension-hemmen Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation taken on the line w x of Fig. l. Fig. 3 is an end elevation. Fig. 4 is a rear elevat-ion. Fig. 5 is an elevation of the guide used in connection with the folding scroll.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A is the aforesaid folding scroll. It is attached to the plate B, which slides on the plate O, by which the attachment is screwed to the plate of the machine, and it is fastened by the screw F, which secures the plate O. D is the scroll for turning under the edge of the cloth. It is attached to the plate E, which eX- tends over the top of the folding scroll, and down upon the surface of plate C, and is per- 'manently fastened to it, and the scroll A slides along the plate C under E toward and from scroll D to adjust it to any required distance from scroll l), according to the width of the hem to be made. As the large opening at the front end of the hemmer is liable to admit more cloth than is needed for the hem, particularly in making wide hems, I have provided an adjustable guide, G G', for contracting the space so as to relieve the operator of the labor of controlling it by hand. For supporting said guide I have formed it on a plate, H, which I fasten to a little upright standard, I, on plate E, immediately above the scroll D 5 and, to adjustit relatively to the scroll A, I make a slot, J, so as to shift the plate along the screw K by which it is fastened to the standard I. The auxiliary presser which I employ in combination with this extension-herinner consists of the spring-plate M, bolted on the plate O, and the secondary plate N, attached to the plate M at O, and provided with the adjustingscrew I). The plate M is secured adjustably to the plate G by the'screw Q, and so arranged that the end It will rest on the top of the machinepresser, to belifted up by it, while the plate itself tends to spring down on the cloth.
The secondary plate is to be forced down upon the cloth at the outer end, to press and smooth the fold down flat, so as to run along the guide S, properly to guide the hem to the needle. The adj listing-screw is to regulate the distance of the plate N from plate M, according to the thickness of the cloth. For example, if the cloth be light andthin, it should be adjusted lower than if the cloth be thick, becausethe sewing-machinepresser presses down into the thick cloth, and the latter will be higher, relatively, to the point of 4support of the secondary presser.
Havingthus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The plates M, N, and screw P, constructed, combined, and arranged in a hemmer, substantially as and for the purpose described.
LOUIS SEXAUER.
