Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIoE.
HENRY S. FIFIELD, OF NEW HAMPTON, NEW HAMPSHIRE.
IMPROVEMENT IN LAM P-CHIMNEYS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N0. 199,8 15, dated January 29, 1878; application filed March 30, 1877.
' same.
The object of my invention is the construction of a lamp-chimney in such a way that small cooking-vessels may be safely placed upon it, and cooking performed in such vessels; and the novelty in the chimney lies in the form, configuration, and arrangement of the top of the same, to adapt it to the purposes before mentioned.
In the drawings, A represents the lampchimney, made in any convenient or common form as to the base a or the body 1) thereof. B is the top of the chimney, which may be a part of the same or a separate piece, with any convenient' means of attachment to the chimney proper. This top consists of abroad flat ring, 0, as displayed upon its upper surface, (shown in Fig. 2,) extending from the central opening of the chimney, which is commonly about an inch and a half in diameter in each direction, about one inch and ahalf more, so thatthe whole top will be four or four and one-half inches across, and large enough to hold securely an ordinary tea or coffee pot. Across this ring 0 are radial grooves d, the purpose of which is to permit the escape of heated air or the products of combustion when the top of the chimney is covered by some vessel. The under side 6 of this top is made preferably with curved lines, as shown, but may be made with rectangular or angular lines, if desired.
It is essential, in the construction of my chimney, that it should be adapted to be held firmly upon a lamp of sufficient size to give stability tothe chimney when a cooking-vessel is placed upon it, and that the top should be a fiat ring, so as to give equal support at all points to vessels, and capable of use with vessels of different sizes, and that the grooves 01 should extend the entire distance from the opening of the chimney to the outside of its top.
It will be readily understood that, when this chimney is in use and a vessel placed upon it, the heated air and products of combustion within the chimney will impinge against the bottom of the vessel and pass along the same, following the grooves, and ascend around the sides of the vessel. It will also be understood that this chimney may be adapted for use with a great variety of lamps, or with gastubes, without departing from the spirit of my invention.
The convenience of such a simple and cheap apparatus is too obvious to require particular mention.
I am aware that lamp-chimneys have been made with flaring, crimped, or serrated tops, and do not broadly claim such, as they do not have the flat ring which I have upon the top of my chimney.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new therein, and for which I desire Letters Patent, is-
The lamp-chimney described, provided with the flap top, having a ring, 0, with grooves cl extending radially entirely across the same, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
' HENRY S. FIFIELD.
