This invention relates to improvements in electric lighting fixtures and more particularly, in the holders for the shades or globes thereof.

The general objects of the present invention are the provision of an improved shade or globe holder, the parts of which are few in number and of inexpensive sheet metal character capable of being readily assembled; in which the shade or globe supporting means of such character as to enable a shade or globe to be readily and conveniently connected to the holder, the connection being effected without tilting the shade or globe; and which holder is of neat and pleasing appearance.

A more specific object of the present invention is the provision of animproved shade or globe holder in which the shade or globe-supporting members thereof are so mounted in the canopy member of the holder as to be freely movable into and out of shade or globesupporting position and in which a simple cover ring member is provided for positively locking said supporting members in such supporting position, said ring member being of such size as to completely cover the locking portions of said supporting members and being adapted to be readily lifted from covering and locking position, when desired, to permit said supporting members to move from supporting position to non-supporting positions.

Another specific object of the present invention is the provision of an improved shade orglobe holder in which the shade or globesupporting members thereof are detachably connected to the canopy member of the holder by simple yet effective means.

Another specific object of the present invention is the provision of an improved shade or globe holder in which the canopy member thereof is provided with an outwardly extending, generally horizontally disposed bottom flange adapted to overlie and engage the rim or neck of the shade or globe, with the result that the top opening of the shade or globe is completely covered and dust and the hke thus prevented from passing downwardly therethrough into the chamber of the shade or globe, if there is such a chamber.

Further objects of the invention are in part obvious and in part will appear more in detail hereinafter.

The invention will be readily understood from the following description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings in which 7 Fig. 1 is a side elevation of the present holder with a shade or globe supported thereby, portions of the holder and said shade or globe being broken away and in section to illustrate interior parts; Fig. 2 is a similar view, with the covering and locking ring member of the holder raised and the supporting members of the holder in non-supporting position; Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view of the present improved holder, the four supporting members thereof being in supporting position; and Fig. 4 is a perspective view of one of the four supporting members of the present improved holder. The present improved shade or globe holder includes a canopy member 1 of generally bell-shape, as is usual, and made of sheet metal. At its bottom, said canopy member is provided with a generally horizontal, annular flange 2 which terminates in a short depending flange 3. This outwardly extending bottom flange 2 of the can-.

opy member is of such lateral extentas to overlie and therefore cover the rim or neck 4- of the shade or globe 5 which is to be supported, the outer depending flange 3 of the canopy member lying outside of and surrounding the rim or neck of said shade or globe. V v

Two or more slots 7 are arranged in the bottom, horizontally disposed flange 2 of the canopy member, sald slots being in opposed relation. In the present embodiment of the preferably invention, there are four of such slots, circumferentially arranged with each slot diametrically opposed by another slot.

In these slots are mounted the sheet metal supporting members of the present holder, one supporting member in each slot, so that there are four supporting members in the holder here shown. These supporting members are of identical construction and are therefore interchangeable, each such supporting member including a locking portion extending abovethe flange 2 of the canopy member 1 and a supporting portion extending below said canopy member flange. The upper locking portion of each supporting member conforms in shape to that part of the canopy member alongside which it lies when the supporting member is in supporting position. Therefore, the locking portion of each supporting member includes an inwardly extending part 10, an upwardly extending part 11 and a top, outwardly extending locking part- 12. The supporting portion of each supporting member includes a depending part 1 1 and an outwardly extending supporting part 15, the outward extension of said supporting part being suflicient to effect proper support of the shade or globe 5.

As best shown in Fig. 4, the upper locking portion of each supporting member is wider than the lower supporting portion thereof so that a. pair of shoulders 16 are provided, said shoulders, by their engagement with the top surface of the canopy member flange 2, limiting downward movement of the supporting member with respect to said canopy member flange, it being understood that each of the slots 7 of said flange is of such size as to snugly receive one of the supporting portions of a supporting member.

To limit upward movement of the supporting members relative to the canopy member flange 2, and thus prevent accidental dis placement or escape of said supporting members, the lower supporting portion of each supporting member is provided with an abutment 20, preferably formed by merely pressing or by punching out and then pressing to one side or the other a portion of the metal of said supporting portion. These abutments or projections are of such size and of such lateral extent as to prevent accidental upward movement of the supporting members relative to the canopy member but yet permit the lower supporting portions of the supporting members to be threaded downwardly through the slots 7 of the canopy member flange.

Each of the supporting members is freely movable, in a rotary manner, from and to the shade or globe supporting position shown in Fig, 1, to and from a plurality of non-supporting positions, one of such non-supporting posit-ions being shown in Fig. 2.

The several supporting members are maintained in supporting position, when desired, by a suitable covering and locking ring member, also made of sheet metal in the preferred embodiment of the invention. Said ring member includes an upwardly extending inner portion 21, a downwardly extending outer portion 22 terminating at its lower end in an outwardly rolled head 23, and a generally horizontal intermediate connecting portion 24:. The upwardly extending inner portion 21 of the ring member is provided at its upper end with an annular groove 26 adapted to interlockingly receive, when said ring member is down in operative position (as in Fig. 1), the outwardly extending locking parts 12 of the locking portions of the supporting members. Nhen the ring member is down in this position, not only are the lower supporting portions of the supporting members maintained in outer, supporting position, but also, the upper locking portions of said supporting members are fully covered and thus concealed by the upwardly, extending portion 21 and the horizontal intermediate portion 24: of the ring member, as will be readily understood.

In connecting a shade or globe to the present improved holder, it is not necessary to tilt or incline the shade of globe, as is the case with holders now on the market. The ready movability of the supporting members of the present holder makes it a simple matter to get the supporting portions of said members within the rim or necx of the shade or globe, and by then bringing the ring member down into operative position, the sup porting members are moved to and positively locked in shade or globe-supportingposition.

Furthermore, it is impossible for the canopy member of the present holder to enter the mouth or opening of the rim or neck of the shade or globe, so that there is no liability of breaking the electric light bulb of the fixture during the act of connecting a shade or globe to the holder, as frequently happens with present-clay holders.

Other advantages of the present invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art to which. it relates.

Vhat I claim is:

1. A shade or globe holder, comprising a canopy member, a. covering and locking ring member, and a plurality of supporting members; said canopy member having an outwardly extending, generally horizontally dirposed bottom flange adapted to overlie the neck or rim of a shade or globe and being provided with a plurality of slots arranged in opposed relation; said supporting members being mounted in said slots, one in each slot. and being freely and rotatably movable to and from supporting position from and to non-supporting position, each of said supporting members have a locking portion above the flange of said canopy member and a supporting portion below said flange, said supporting portions, when in supporting position, engaging the inner surface of the rim or neck of the shade or globe; and said covering and locking ring member having an upwardly extending inner portion, a downwardly extending outer portion, and a generally horizontally disposed intermediate connecting portion, said ring member being adapted, when in operative position, to maintain said supporting members in supporting position and to fully cover and thereby conceal the locking portions of said supporting members.

2. A shade or globe holder as set forth in claim 1, characterized in that the locking portion of each supporting member is provided with means adapted to interlock with the upwardly extending inner portion of said ring member when said ring member is in operative position.

3. A shade or globe holder as set forth in claim 1, characterized in that the locking portion of each supporting member is provided at its upper end with an outwardly extending locking part, and in that the upwardly extending inner portion of said ring member is provided at its upper end with cavity means adapted to interlockingly receive, when said ring member is in operative position, the locking parts of the locking portions of said supporting members.

A shade or globe holder as set forth in claim 1, characterized in that the locking portion of each supporting member is provided at its upper end with an outwardly extending locking part, and in that the upwardly extending inner portion of said ring member is provided at its upper end with an annular groove adapted to interlockingly receive, when said ring member is in operative position, the locking parts of the locking portions of said supporting members.

5. A shade or globe holder as set forth in claim 1, characterized in that said supporting members are each provided with means for preventing their escape from the slots of said canopy member.

6. A shade or globe holder as set forth in claim 1, characterized in that said supporting members are maintained in the slots of said canopy member by reason of the fact that the locking portions of said supporting members are wider than the supporting portions thereof, the slots in said canopy member being each of such size as to snugly receive a supporting portion of a supporting member, and further, by reason of the fact that each of the supporting portions of said supporting members is provided on one of its side faces with an abutment.

7. A shade or globe holder as set forth in claim 1, characterized in that said supporting members are maintained in the slots of said canopy member by reason of the fact that signature.
