MARK W. SPAULDING, OF RENSSELAER FALLS, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN HOLDBACK ATTACHMENTS FOR CARRIAGES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 199,589, dated J anuary 22, 1878; application filed July 9, 1877".
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARK W. SPAULDING, of Rensselaer Falls, in the county of St. Lawrence and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Holdback Attachments for Carriages; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification, and in which like letters indicate similar parts of the invention in all the figures.
My invention relates to holdback attachments for the thills of carriages; and consists in certain improvements and modifications in the construction of the same, as hereinafter shown and described.
In the construction of my device, a plate is firmed, to be fastened to the upper side of the thill by means of screws, and to this plate is coupled a clamp, which is made somewhat in the form of a swinging loop, and through which the strap connecting with the harnessbreeching is passed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents, in perspective, my improved thill attachment with the holdback-strap in position therein. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section, and Fig. 3 is a plan view of plate and clamp.
In the drawing, A designates the main plate, firmly fastened by means of screws a to the thill B, the said plate A being formed, as shown, to have a rib, 0, across its upper surface, and a groove or seat, d, under the same, along and in which passes the crossbar or rundle b of the swinging clamp C. At the rear end of the plate A is formed the loop f.
The swinging clamp 0 consists of the upper plate, extending across plate A, and provided with lugs g, connecting with the ends of the crossbar or rundle b, passing in the groove (1, formed on the under side of plate A.
The back edge or lip h of the clamp C may be made straight or provided with teeth, as shown in Fig. 3, if desired, for more efi'ectually clamping the holdback-strap; or, for the same purpose, the under side of the lip may be serrated.
As shown in the drawing, the swinging clamp G is constructed so that its upper part is held far enough above the plate A to allow the insertion of the holdback-strap D, and also allow the movement of the clamp O on the pivotal coupling under the rib c. It is also preferably constructed so that, when operated, the lip h, pressing down on the strap D, and the forward edge of the clamp being raised, the strap connecting with the breeching forms a right angle with the upper plate of the clamp.
In operation, the holdback-strap D, connecting with the harness-breeching, being inserted through the clamp G at the forward end, and passed through the loop f at the rear end of plate A, remains loosely in the clamp until a backing movement of the carriage commences, when the strap, bearing against the front of clamp 0, causes the lip to bear down on the strap D, and hold the same tightly until the backing movement is stopped.
I claim as my invention- 1. The holdback attachment consisting of the swinging clamp 0, provided with lip 11, coupled with the carriage-thill, as and. for the purpose described.
2. The holdback attachment consisting of the plate A and swinging clamp O, coupled together substantially as set forth.
3. In combination, the plate A, having the recess or groove 01 and loop f, and the swinging clamp G, provided with the lip h, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own invention I atfix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
MARK WARREN SPAULDI NG.
