IMPROVEMENT IN WINDOW-SCREENS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 199,5@0, dated January 22, 18.78; application led October 30, 1877.

Be it known that I, CHELTON MATEENY, of Wintersville, in the county of Decatur, and in the State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Window- Ventilators and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.

The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a windowventilator, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth. A

In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, which represents a front view of a window with my improved ventilator.

A represents an ordinary window-frame, with lower sash B and upper sash O.

The lower sash B may be raised and lowered and held in any desired position by any suitable means, as such forms no part of my invention, and I lay no claim to the same.

The upper sash C is connected by two bands, a a, to a roller, D, which is mounted in the top of the frame. To these bands, as well as `to the roller and the top of the upper sash, is

attached a screen, G, of any suitable material. This screen winds with the bands a on the roller D, and when unwound lls the space between the side pieces of the frame.

One end of the roller D extends suliiciently far into the side piece of the frame to receive a cord, b, which is fastened thereto and wound around the same. This cord b passes down through a vertical passage, x, in the side piece of the frame, and passes out to the front thereof at or near the center thereof; and a ring, d, is secured to the end of such cord, by means of which the roller may be rotated to wind up the screen and raise the upper sash, which is then held at any point desired by fastening the ring cl upon any one of a series of pins, e, fastened in the window-frame. By loosening the ring el from such pin the window will descend of its own gravity, unwinding the screen with it, the space between the sash and the roller being at all times taken up with the screen.

The screen Gis, as stated, removable, and may be connected to the sash by any suitable means. It may be connected with the roller by hooks or other means; and, if necessary, hooks or buttons may be used to connect it with the bands a a.

By making the screen removable it can be taken off at any time, so as to leave the space open, without interfering in any way with the working of the upper sash, the same being at all times suspended from the roller by the bands a. When the screen is attached in place there is no strain thereon whatever.

Instead of having the cord el pass out in front of the frame, it may be attached to a shaft passed through the frame, and said shaft provided on its outer end vwith a knob for turning the same, by means of which the sash may then be raised and lowered, as desired.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

Ihe upper sash C, suspended by the bands a a from the roller D, the removable screen G, and cord b, all constructed substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
