Description
. L. MATHIAS. Pedal Attachment for Pianos.
N0.198,893. Patented Jan. 1,1878.
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIcE.
LOUIS MATHIAS, OF TOLEDO, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN PEDAL ATTACHMENTS FOR PIANOS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 198,893, dated January 1, 1878; application filed October 20, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LOUIS MATHIAS, of Toledo, in the county of Lucas, and in the State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Foot-Stools for Pianos; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention relates to that class of footstools, with attachments designed to be attached to a piano, by which small children will be enabled to operate the pedals of the piano with the same case as grown persons and consists in the construction hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawings, in which- Figure l is a longitudinal vertical section of my invention, and Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same.
A represents the footstool, made in the form of a box, of any suitable dimensions, open at the bottom and on the rear. On top of the stool A, along the rear edge, is a strip, B, to which are hinged two pedals, O 0. These pedals are, by means of hinged rods a a, passing downward into the interior of the stool, connected with two blades,D D,which are hinged to the front of the stool, at or near the top.
The blades D may be adjusted up anddown on the connecting-rods a. a, as shown in Fig. 1.
In the center of the back of the stool is a hook, G, adjusted up and down by means of a screw, b.
The stool thus arranged is placed under the piano, and attached to the lyre of the piano by means of the hook G, in such a manner that the piano-pedals will project into the stool, and be directly below the blades D D.
This device enables children to use the pedals, and gives a comfortable resting-place for the feet, thereby insuring a good position of the young pupil. It can be attached to and removed from any piano instantly, leaving no mark on the instrument. It maybe constructed to suit any piano, whether two, or more or less, pedals are thereon.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- The footstool A, provided with pedals 0, connected by rods (0 with hinged blades D, and the adjustable fastening device G 1), constructed substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 4th day of October, 187 7.
LOUIS MATHIAS.
