y A Be it known that I, CHARLES ScoFIELD, of

Vineland, in the county of Cumberland and State of N ew Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in a Match-B ox and Stamp or Ticket Holder, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which` Figures l and 2 are side views of the device embodying my invention. Figs. 3 and 4 are views of opposite faces, the parts `being open. Fig. 5 is a view of Fig. 2, the parts being open.

Fig. 6 is a central transverse section thereof.

Fig. 7 is a central longitudinal section thereof.

This invention relates `to an improved match box or safe designed with receptacles for matches, stamps, or railroad-tickets.

The improvement consists, rst, in a spring secured within the match-box transversely to the length of the same and of the matches placed therein, the said spring being arranged and adapted to exert a yielding pressure upon the matches stored within the receptacle; secl ond, in an improved matchbox and stamp or ticket holder having an arrangement of springs `within subdivisions of one compartment for the stamps or tickets, and a centrally-located spring adapted to extend into and operate upon the matches' within anotherv` compartment upon the reverse side ,of the case; and,

third, in a match-box witha projecting rim and covering or shell, combined and adapted `to operate all substantially in the manner as hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.

Referring to the drawings, A represents a box or safe, which is pivoted to acovering or shell, B, whereby the box and its contents may be inclosed and protected when required,

swung out and exposed or made accessible.

(l represents a spring, which is secured to the box A, and it extends transversely, or in the 4direction at a right angle, to the'length of the u matches placed in the box, and said spring is so disposed that it will exert a pressure on the matches resting on the bottom of the box, whereby the matches will not shift or fall from the box but they may be readily removed when desired or necessary. l In order to allow the greatest freedom of motion of said spring C, andcause it tohold matches in large or small quantities, the sprin g is bent into the form of a loop, one end of which is secured to the box, and the other is free, and elevated' so as to overhang and bear `against the matches, as more clearly shown .u

To the bottom or back of the box therel are secured transversely-extendin g springs D, and around the edge of said back there projects arim, a, which constitutes the sidesof a chamber, E, on said bottom, adapted for the reception of stamps or tickets, or both, which are to be held in place bythe springs D, the chamber being formed in subdivisions for stamps or tickets of dierent denominations or characteristics, each subdivision Lhaving one or more ofthe springs D, for holding the stamps.

It will be seen that the matches and stamps i or tickets rest on opposite sides of the bottom of the box, that they are convenient of access, and that they will be held without liabilityY of displacement, whether they face upward or u downward.

In order to remove a match or stamp, or ticket, it is simply drawn from its position,

the power of the holdingspring being overcome by such act.

.It will also be seen that when the box or case is swung into the covering or shell B, the matches and stamps or tickets will be inclosed,so that the device can be conveniently and safely carried in the pocket; and owing to the shell and the projecting rim a of the chamber E, the stamps, &c., in the latter are protected from warmth and moisture of the body, andl consequent sticking, curling, &c.`

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-'.- 4

1. The match-box A, provided with a spring, C, secured therein transversely to the length of the box, and adapted to exert a springpressure upon the matches within the receptacle, substantially in the manner and for the purposesherein shown and set forth.

2.
