This invention relates to improvements :in

containers and particularly those adapted to hold cigarettes or the makings together with their accessories, as matches, papers and the like.

The principal object of the invention is to provide a device which will protect the cigarettes or other articles contained therein, the same being very compact and capable of being folded so as to be disposed readily in the pocket of an ordinary garment.

These and other like objects are attained by the novel construction and combination of parts hereafter described and shown in the accompanying drawings, forming a material part of this disclosure, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a container made in accordance with the invention, the parts being extended as in operation.

The invention comprises a hollow rectan gular receptacle 10, carrying a longitudinal partition 11, and a transverse partition 12, forming compartments 14, 15, and 16, over the former of which is a lid 18, secured by hinges 19, to the divisional wall or parti tion'll, while opposite the hinges is a sprlng clip 20, engageable with a depression formed in the side of the container.

,w-hilethe compartment 15 has a-raised fioor-" ing 30, to which is attached a pair of oppo- 1 sitely disposed-r clips: 31, ihaviingl :upstan'ding concave ends 32, opposite to which are similarly shaped clips 38 attached to tubes 34, and supported by pins 35, set in the partition 11, the supports being encircled by compression springs 38, in such manner as to force the clips 33 outwardly and against the opposing clips 32, the upper ends of both clips being slightly outturned so as to readily receive a match 40, placed longitudinally therebetween, the extending head 41 of which is held against an abrading disk 44, carried on the head 45, supported by a spindle 46, rotatably mounted in the end elements of the box and a third partition plate 47, the spindle being provided with an actuating handle 48, by which it may be rotated, the axis of. the spindle being out of register with the axis of the match when held between the spring clips.

A knife 50, pivoted by the pin 51, has an extending handle 52, bywhich it may be operated by raising or lowering the same relative to the opening 54 formed in the com'- partrnent 55 below the false bottom 30, while a supply of thin paper 60 such as is ordinarily used in rolling cigarettes, may be maintained in the compartment contiguous to the match space in the compartment 16.'

In operation, the main compartment 14, as before described, may be used to contain a supply of cigarettes or the like, matches being contained within the compartment 1.6 together with the cigarette paper, the matches or paper being easily obtainable by raising the supplementary cover 25 without disturbing the main cover 22, or if it is desired to make use of the cigarettes stored within the compartment 14, the main cover 22 may be raised upon its hinges as well as the interior cover 18.

In striking a match, one is taken from the compartment 16, and forced downwardly between the opposing clips 22 and '23, the clips holding the same substantially rigid, and by pressing the crank 48 slightly in and rotating it, causing the abrading disk 44 to be rotated against the head of the match, thereby lighting the same whereupon the match may be withdrawn by the fingers and applied for whatever purpose it is desired.

At this time the supplementary cover will be in position so that any smoke or flames from the same will not injure the contents of the container.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letter Patent, is.

1. In a container, the combination with a body having a plurality of compartments, a cover over the main compartment, of a second cover adapted to be disposed over the first named cover, a third cover hinged at the edge of the second named cover, a pair of opposing match clips in one of said compartments, a circular abrading element held relatively at the head of the match, and means for rotating said abrading element, whereby the match may be ignited.

2. In a container, the combination with a compartmented body of a pair of opposed resilient spring clips formed in one of said compartments adapted to contain a match,

a rotary abrader mounted eccentrically to the axis of said match containing clips, and means for operating said abrader.
