Description

PATENT OEErcE.
L. OTTO P. MEYER, OF NEWTOWN, CONNECTICUT.
IMPROVEMENT IN MATCH-HOLDERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 120,890, dated November 14, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, L. OTTo P. MEYER, of Newtown, county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain Improvements in the Manufacture of Match-Holders; and the following is a specification thereof.
My invention relates to match-holders, so constructed that, when in use, the matches are conveniently exposed to easy access; and constructed in such sizes or of such relative proportions to common Wooden or paper match-box shells provided with igniting surfaces, that the parts are adapted to be used for one denite end, so that when in use a ready means is afforded for igniting theA matches and utilizing for ignition theigniting surfaces of said common box-shells. My improvements are made with the view of coni structing holder A A so as to be as convenient and useful as any other holder for aforesaid purpose; but to distinguish itself especially in comparison with holders of similar cheapness by neat appearance when afxed for use.
The plate contains perspective views of holder A A embodying my invention. Figure l shows the holder as incased or surrounded by a common box-shell, fw, With igniting surface Y infront in a position ready for use. Fig. 2 shows the holder in a position ready to receive the common box-shell. Fig. 3 is front elevation. Fig. 4 is side elevation. Fig. 5 is side elevation, and shows the holder in a position ready to receive the common box-shell. Fig. Gis sectional side elevation, section at dotted line m m. Fig. 7 is plan.
Of what material the holder be manufactured is optional, but sheet metal Will be most suitable; and Figs. 8 and 9 show the shape of sheet metal suitable for the parts A and B. The single lines of dots indicate the required bending in one direction, and the double lines of dots bending in the opposite direction. Soldering is, requiredr only at E E. The projecting pieces H of plate A and B form a hinge. The partAis so constructed as to form an open box, capable of holding about one hundred matches, and to be of a size suitable to be inclosed or surrounded by a common box-shell for aforesaid purpose. The front and sides of part A extend further down than the bottom plate of the box or matchreceptacle, for the purpose of supporting or strengthening the igniting surface in its whole length. The part B is joined to partA by hinge H H H, for securely fixing' or hanging up the holder to its place, and its clasp C is to secure, in conjunction with part A, the common matchbox shell in its place. The length of plate B between the hinge H H H and the upper edge of clasp C is required to be the same or a little more than the length of the common box-shell. To slip the wooden or paper box-shell on the holder the part A is to be turned on its hinge from off the part B, as shown by Figs. 2 and 5, and the common box-shell is to be slipped on part A close up to the hinge; then partA is to be clapped back on part B 5 and the box-shell is to be pushed down into the clasp C, and thus securely held in its place.- To withdraw the common box-shell from the holder the box-shell is rst to be raised out of the clasp C.
I do not herewith lay claim to the manufacture of match-holders of such sizes or of such relative proportions to my safety-match wooden box-shell that the parts are adapted to be used for one definite end. Such claim I have made subject of a separate application for Letters Patent.
What I claim as my invention is- The combination of part A and part B, the plate B serving the purpose of afxiug the holder to its place, and also serving, in conjunction with part A, to secure a match-box shelll in its place, substantially as and for the purpose hereinbefore set forth.
