A lubricant to be used on the valve mechanism will preferably contain a larger amount of such compounds, say 2 to 10%. The limit of the amount which will produce improved results depends upon the reduction in viscosity of theoil caused by the compound added. Certain of the more viscous compounds, for example, chlorinated diphenyl containing about 50% chlorine, may be added in amounts exceeding 10% without causing too great a reduction of the viscosity. In any case, the composition will have inferior lubricating properties if the loss of viscosity is too great as will result from the use of more than 20% of halogenated compounds of any occurs readily and at ordinary type. Compositions of the character described are capable of providing superior valve lubrication, and exhibit marked penetration while at the same time the advantage of low volatile oil body is had. For usage in internal combustion engines, a further particular advantage lies in the tendency of such a compounded oil to keep down carbon formation and hence, the lubricant comprising my invention is well adapted for use in motor fuel, i. e., the composition may be dissolved in gasoline or the like in order to lubricate the upper parts of the engine consuming such fuel. I'he cold test of such oils moreover is materially lowered, thus rendering them notably useful for engine lubrication in cold weather or in aviation also for transformer and electrical usage generally.
This application is a continuation in part of my co-pending application, Ser. No. 463,366 filed June 23, 1930.
Other modes of applying the principle of the invention may be employed, change being made as regards the details described, provided the features stated in any of the following claims, or the equivalent of such, be employed.
I, therefore particularly point out and distinctly claim as my invention:-
1. A composition of matter which includes a lubricating composition having as a primary lubricating constituent a major proportion of lubricating oil base and a minor proportion less than 20%, based on the amount of such oil base, of a halogenated carbon ring compound.
2. As a composition of matter, a lubricating composition having as a primary lubricating constituent the combination of mineral oil and a. minor proportion less than 20%, based on such 5 45 I atom which is a part of an organic ring structure.

5. A lubricating composition including a major proportion of a mineral oil base and a minor proportion less than 20% of a halogenated hydrocarbon and in which substantially all ofthe halogen present is in the form of a halogenated car bon ring compound.
6. A lubricating composition including a major proportion of a mineral oil base and a minor proportion from .25% to 10% of a halogenated hydrocarbon and in which substantially all of the halogen present is in the form of a halogenated carbon ring compound.
'7. As a composition of matter, a lubricating composition having as a primary lubricating con stituent the combination of mineral oil, and a minor proportion less than 20%, based on such mineral oil, of a halogenated organic ring compound of the type in which the halogen is directly attached to the ring structure.
8. A lubricating composition including a major proportion of mineral oil base and a minor proportion less than 20% based on such mineral oil of an organic halogen compound in which the halogen present is directly attached to an atom which is a part of an organic ring structure.
9; A lubricating or dielectric composition including a major proportion of mineral oil base and a minor proportion less than 20% based on such mineral oilof an organic halogen compound and in which substantially all of the halogen present in the composition is directly attached to an IOT'As a composition of matter, a lubricating composition having as a primary lubricating constituent the combination of mineral oiland a minor proportion less than 20%, based on such mineral oil, of a halogenated aromatic compound.
11. As a composition of matter, a lubricating composition having as a primary lubricating constituent the combination of mineral oil and a minor proportion less than 20% based on such mineral oil of a halogenated organic compound of the type in which the halogen is directly attached to a carbon atom which is a part of a six-.
membered organic ring structure.
12. As a composition of matter, a lubricating composition having as a primary lubricating constituent the combination of mineral oil and a minor proportion less than 20%, based on such mineral oil, of a halogenated aromatic compound of the type in which the halogen is directly attached to a ring structure. a

As a composition of matter, a lubricating composition having as a primary lubricatingconstituent the combination of mineral oil and a minor proportion less than 20% based on such mineral oil of a halogenated organic compound of the type in which the halogen is directly attached to a carbon atom which is a part of a ben- 14. As a composition oi-matter, a lubricating minor proportion of less than 20% composition having as a primary lubricating constituent the combination of mineral oil and a. minor proportion less than 20% based on such mineral oil of a halogenated organic compound of the type in which the halogen is directly attached to an atom which is a part of the ring structure of an aryl group.

As a composition of matter, a lubricating composition having as a primary lubricating constituent the combination of a major proportion of mineral oil and a minor proportion of a halogenated organic compound of the type in which the halogen is directly attached to a phenyl group. 16. As a composition of matter, a lubricating composition having as a primary lubricating constituent the combination of mineral oil and a minor proportion less than 20% based on the amount of such' mineral oil, of a halogenated organic compound of the type in which the halogen is directly attached to a naphthyl group.
17. A lubricating composition including a' base and a of a halogen compound in which substantially all of the halogen present is in the form of at least one commajor proportion of a mineral oil pound of the class including halogenated benzene,
halogenated substituted benzene, halogenated diphenyl, halogenated substituted diphenyl, halogenated naphthalene and halogenated substituted naphthalene. a

A lubricating composition including a major proportion of a mineral oil base and a minor proportion of from .25% to 10% of a halogen compound in which substantially all of the halogen present is in the form of a halogenated carbon ring compound and including at least one compound of the class including halogenated benzene, halogenated substituted benzene, halogenated naphthalene, halogenated substituted naphthalene, halogenated diphenyl and halogenated substituted diphenyl.
19. A lubricating composition including a major proportion of a suitable oil base and a minor proportion of a halogenated diphenyl compound.
20. A lubricating or dielectric composition including a major proportion of suitable oil base and a minor proportion of halogenated polyphenyl.
21. A lubricating composition including a major proportion of suitable oil base and a minor proportion of halogenated polyphenyl.
22. A lubricating composition comprising a cluding at least one compound of the class in--.-.
cluding halogenated benzene and halogenated substituted benzene.
24. A lubricating composition including a major proportion of a mineral oil base and a minor proportion of from .25% to 10% of a halogen compound in which substantially all of the halogen present is in the form of a halogenated carbon ring compound and including at least one compound of the class including halogenated benzene and halogenated substituted benzene.
25. A lubricating composition including a-major proportion of a suitable oil base and a minor propsrtinn of a halogen compound in which substantially all of the halogen present is in the form of at least one compound of the class including halogenated benzene and halogenated substituted benzene.
26. A lubricating composition including a major proportion of a mineral oil base and a minor proportion of from to 10% of a halogenated compound in which substantially all or the halogen present is in the form of at least one compound or the class including halogenated benzene and halogenated substituted benzene.
27. A lubricating composition comprising a major proportion of suitable oil base and a minor proportion of at least one compound of the class including halogenated diphenyl and halogenated substituted diphenyl.
28. A lubricating composition including a major proportion of a suitable oil base and a minor proportion of halogen compounds in which substantially all ot'the halogen present is in the form of a halogenated carbon ring compound and including at least one compound of the class including halogenated diphenyl and halogenated substituted diphenyl.
29. A lubricating composition including a major proportion of a mineral oil base and a minor proportion of from 25% to 10% of a halogen compound in which substantially all of the halogen present is in the form of a halogenated carbon ring compound and including at least one compound of the class including halogenated diphenyl and halogenated substituted diphenyl.

A lubricating composition including a major proportion of a mineral oil base and a minor proportion of from 25% to 10% of a halogen compound in which substantially all of the halogen present is in the form of a halogenated carbon ring compound and including at least one compound of the class including halogenated naphthalene and halogenatedsubstituted naphthalene.
