Sam 2 L W4 L55 ATTORNEY Patented Dec. 4, 1934 PATENT OFFICE UNITED STATES My invention relates to improvements in tags and tag fasteners, and it consists in the novel features which are hereinafter described.

One of the objects of myinvention is to pro- 1 5 duce a fabric tag with a perfected means for fastening the same to a garment or a piece of linen in a way to prevent the accidental disengagement of the garment from the fastener.

Another object of my invention is to prevent the laceration of the hands of operators and the mutilation of the fabrics of garments'by protruding sharp points on the fastener.

A further object is to reduce the size of the tag to a minimum.

A still other object of my invention is to have my improved tag and tag fastener simple, durable and inexpensive.

Other objects and advantages will hereinafter appear.

I attain these objects by the tag and tag fastener, several forms of which are illustrated in the accompanying drawing, or by any mechanical equivalent or obvious modification of the same.

In the form of my tag and tag fastener shown in Figs. 1 and 2 the tag 21 is secured to the outer side of the prong 23 of the metal fastener 22-23 by means of

rivets

24 and 25; the deflector 26 has the shape of a half cup, as shown in Fig. 2, and is slitted at the lower end thereof from the metal of the prong 23, leaving an opening 29 between said deflector 26 and the rear of the prong 23 at the adjacent part of the latter.

The piercing tongue 2'7 is slitted from the prong 22 leaving therein an opening 28.

A fabric 31 is placed between the two prongs, whereupon the latter are pressed towards each other, causing the tongue 27 to pierce the fabric 31 and then to be deflected by the half cup 26 and directed through the opening 29 into the space pointed end of the tongue 27 30 enclosed between the inner side of the tag 21 and the outer side of the prong 23.

In this way the part of the tag, 21 which is adjacent to the space 29 serves as a shield for the to prevent injury to persons and garments. I

In the form of my tag and tag fastener shown in Figs. 3, '4 and 5 the prongs 32 are identical in shape and each of the prongs is covered exteriorly by the tag 31, the ends 31a of which overlap the body of the prong. The tongues 37 are disposed '75 each opposite a corresponding deflector 36 in the opposite prong.

The deflectors 36 are similar to the deflector 26 of Fig. 2.

A garment may be placed with a portion there- W of extending into the space between the prongs 32. The prongs are then pressed towards each other until the tongues 37 pierce the garment and are deflected each by the opposite deflector 36 into a position between the inner side of the

The tag and tag fastener shown in Figs. 1 and 2 may be modified by covering both

prongs

22 and 23 with the tag 21, as by raising the lower end of the tag 21 in Fig. 2 and placing it against the 1 outer side of the prong 22 and then riveting the tag thereto, and leaving the other features of the tag and fastener of Figs. 1 and 2 unchanged. 1

Many other changes may be made in my tag i and tag fastener without departing from the 1 main scope of my invention, and parts of my invention may be used without other parts.

I do not, therefore, restrict myself to the details as shown in the drawing; but I intend to include also all mechanical equivalents and obvious modiflcations of the same within the scope of my invention.

I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent:

1. In a tag and tag fastener a pair of prongs, a piercing tongue on one of said prongs, whereby to pierce a fabric, a tag portion secured to the other of said prongs in a way to cover the outer side of the latter, a deflector means on said other prong extending outwardly therefrom towards said tag portion, which is stretched thereover leaving a space between said tag portion and a part of the outer side of said other prong, and said other prong having therein an opening adjacent said deflector means, for said tongue to pass therethrough, whereby, when said prongs are pressed towards each other, said tongue is deflected into a position in the space between the outer side of said other prong and the inner side of the tag portion adjacent thereto.

2. In a tag and tag fastener a pair of prongs, a piercing tongue on one of said prongs, whereby to pierce a fabric, a tag portion secured to both prongs in a way to cover the outer sides of the latter, a deflector means on the other of said prongs extending outwardly therefrom towards the adjacent tag portion, which is stretched thereover leaving a space between said tag portion and a part of the outer side of said other prong, and said other prong having therein an opening adjacent said deflector means, for said tongue to pass therethrough, whereby, when said prongs are pressed towards each other, said tongue is deflected into a position in the space between the outer side of the opposite prong and the inner side of the tag portion adjacent thereto.

3. In a tag and tag fastener a pair of prongs, a piercing tongue on each of said prongs, whereby to pierce a fabric, a tag portion secured to both prongs in a way to cover the outer sides of the same, a deflector means on each of said prongs disposed opposite the piercing tongue in the other prong, and each of said prongs having therein an opening adjacent the deflecting means thereon, for the tongue of the other prong to pass therethrough, whereby, when said prongs are pressed towards each other, each of said tongues is deflected into a position between the outer side of the opposite prong and the inner side of the tag portion adjacent thereto.

4. In a tag and tag fastener a pair of prongs, a piercing tongue on each of said prongs, whereby to pierce a fabric, a tag portion secured to said fastener, a curved deflector on each of said prongs disposed opposite the piercing tongue in the other prong, whereby, when said prongs are pressed towards each other, the outer end of each of said tongues is deflected by the corresponding deflector on the other prong into a position which is substantially parallel to the latter.
